When Olivia miraculously appears after going missing so many years ago, her sister Caitlin has her doubts. Is it really Olivia? There's so much she doesn't seem to know about their past. Caitlin is determined to find out the truth though and what she does find out will leave you shocked!!
This was such a good story. So many twists had me unable to put this book down. With dual POVs, I highly recommend this one to all thriller lovers.
I really heard good things about this book but the formatting of the writing structure really was not for me and therefore found it difficult to read the book and the story. However the worst part is the implied incest and I had to draw the line there as that is gross and definitely not something I signed up or thought would happen based on the blurb.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. The story started out good with two sisters enjoying a day on their own while their parents go out. The older sister, Olivia, gets taken from their house by a man wearing a mask and holding a knife to her throat. Fast forward to adults and Olivia comes home. There is another story within this one about a brother and sister and you can definitely tell there is incest involved and this just ruined it for me. I couldn't finish as this was so disturbing.
Every time Dandy Smith releases a new book, I can't read it fast enough. The Wrong Daughter did not disappoint. This was a really twisty story and the big twist was so shocking!
Sisters Olivia, 13, and Caitlin, 10, live with their parents in Blossom Hill House in Stonewall, Somerset. One night their parents leave them some money to order takeout and head off to be with friends. The girls are enjoying themselves unaware that they are being watched through the window. They go to bed as usual, but Caitlyn is awakened by a noise to see Olivia being led outside with a man holding a knife to her throat. She’s gone.
It’s 16 years later and Caitlyn is a teacher and is engaged to Oscar. She gets a phone call from her parents saying that Olivia has returned home. Rushing to see her, Caitlyn is overjoyed to have her sister back. However, Olivia is not ready to say much about where she has been. But Caitlyn is very patient with her only wanting to help her settle back in.
Elinor, 17, and Heath, 20, Ledbury, brother and sister, lost their parents when they were young and their Uncle Robert manages their inheritance as they live in Ledbury Hall. Robert is a cruel man and treats them badly. They just want to be able to get their inheritance and get away from him.
This book is filled with lots of twists and turn and is quite cringe-worthy. I admit it was also very disturbing. A psychological thriller that is so scary and a mite distasteful. However, I am sure readers will find it fascinating.
Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The Wrong Daughter by Dandy Smith is my third title by this author and her books just get better and better.
A fantastic psychological thriller that had me gripped right from the very start. It was well writen with a compelling storyline and well developed characters.
I was pulled into this story instantly and didn't want to put it down.
This is such a well written story. I found myself really invested in the story and characters.
The Wrong Daughter had me on the edge of the seat from the very first page it was full of suspense and I had many gasps out loud because of the twists and turns.
Thank You NetGalley and Embla Books for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Told from 2 pov of two seperate stories. The main one concentrates on the after effects of a sister being taken as a child and seemingly reappearing 16 years later.. this is another pov that conventrates on story telling using strong female characters.
I loved the fact the character writting felt real and not ott. I was compelled to read to find out how the stories were linked. It was full of twists and red herrings i found the middle seemed to loose itself it made the pace off and then it just 🤯 exploded. I really enjoyed the final act i actually cared about both the sisters and wanted a happier ending but it was very realistic .
When i finished i felt like i had understood the character atc of the sisters and their interactions with others but a big part of me wanted the odd chapter from the reappearing sister just to tie it together..
I would recommended this to anyone who love a fiod mystery of who's that girl. It kept me up late.
Thanks to netgallery and publisher and author for this 5 star read.
My Review:
Wow!!!!! That ending pulled on all my emotional heartstrings. This book will definitely not be forgotten. Lately, I have been trying new authors and this was a perfect one to start with by this author. It had everything I look for in a great book. I loved the characters as I didn’t know who or what to believe. Let me tell you too this one had several twisted people in it. I don’t know how the author came up with their minds but it made for a wonderful book. The story line was simple yet complex in so many ways. The loss of so many years apart were different for each character yet created a bond like no other in the end. Oh and don’t even get me started on that ending. I was left totally speechless and in shock. I will definitely be reading more by this author. She is going on my favorites list right away.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks to #NetGalley and #EmblaBooks for the book # TheWrongDaughter by #DandySmith. This is an Interesting book on an abduction and a sister/daughter that has returned. Is it really her sister? Is she going crazy? What really happened that night?
The Wrong Daughter is a psychological thriller.
Caitlin has been living under a cloud since the day her older sister Olivia was taken. Always feeling responsible for not calling the police, she feels as if her parents wanted her to become Olivia. One day she receives a call from her father who never calls. Anxious, she answers the call. She hears the words she hoped to hear all those years ago. 'Caitlin,' he says. 'You need to come to the house. Right now. It's Olivia. She's back.'
On the fateful night, Olivia was left in charge when her parents went to a dinner party. They don't see that a man is watching them. After they fall asleep, he enters the house and heads straight for Olivia. Caitlin is terrorized into not reacting giving him time to escape. She stays frozen waiting for her parents return.
This book is told from two points of view, Caitlin and Elinor. Each one is very different from the other, but we don't learn how until much later in the book.
This was a real pager turner. The story unfolds with a lot of drama in an intense situation. Early on you can see that something is off in these relationships. It takes time for Caitlin to see what is real and what is not. The ending is a shocking twist that is rewarding for all.
Dandy Smith’s latest book “The Wrong Daughter” is a multi-viewpoint psychological thriller that I could not put down.
On one hand we get the viewpoint of 27 year old school teacher Caitlin Arden. As a young girl, Caitlin’s older sister Olivia is kidnapped by a masked man, causing the lives of her and her family to be changed forever. After that devastating day, every life decision that Caitlin has made has been to please her parents who blame her for her sister’s disappearance.
On the other hand, we get a look into the life of a lonely teenager named Elinor Ledbury. Elinor is an orphan who lives in a mansion with her brother Heath and their abusive uncle. Their uncle is not a great parental figure to them, so they only have each other to lean on. Most of the day Elinor is home alone yearning for her brother to come back. The relationship between Heath and Elinor is definitely a “flowers in the attic” type of situation.
As I was reading this book, I could not figure out what the connection between the two characters were. They seemed to be in different timelines. Caitlin was in a modern world of social media, audiobooks, and charcuterie boards while Elinor was in an electronic-less mansion and had no knowledge of Disney movies??!
This was a fun but frustrating read. It is not your average kidnapping/rescue story. Every clue I picked up, every guess I had, every connection I thought I found, were all absolutely wrong. It was a wild ride with a lot of twists and turns. If you think you have this book figured out, you DO NOT!!! Thank you NetGalley and publishers for this advanced copy. I enjoyed reading it.
A story of a girl, Caitlin, whose sister got taken in the middle of the night. She grew up trying to follow in what would have been her big sister Olivia’s shoes. When on the anniversary of her disappearance, she suddenly shows back up. Where do they all go from here and is everything as good as they all dreamed?
I honestly liked this book quite a bit. I didn’t see the sudden twists coming but I enjoyed how much I kept trying to guess all the details. I was searching so much to see how the two stories connected but every hint and clue I saw was wrong! It was a great read but I wished it didn’t have the ending it had!
Thank you to Embla Books and Dandy Smith for allowing me to read and review this before the release!
Dandy Smith's "The Wrong Daughter" unfolds a riveting tale centered around the lives of two sisters, Caitlin and Olivia. The narrative begins with a fateful night when their parents leave them home alone for the first time, blissfully unaware of the danger that lurks just outside their door. I rate it a solid 3.5 stars.
As the girls revel in their newfound independence, a mysterious figure watches from the shadows, patiently awaiting the opportune moment. The suspense heightens as the intruder infiltrates through an unlocked back door under the cover of night. The next morning, Olivia is missing, leaving Caitlin to deal with the haunting consequences that will forever alter her life.
Fast-forward sixteen years, and the unexpected happens—Olivia reappears. However, skepticism arises. Is this really Caitlin's long-lost sister, or is there more to Olivia's return than meets the eye? Themes of family bonds, deception, and the lasting impact of traumatic events are interwoven throughout the narrative, captivating readers and keeping them on the edge of their seats.
Trust and identity take center stage as Caitlin navigates the truth behind Olivia's reappearance, and the plot takes unexpected turns, maintaining an air of mystery until the very end. The intricate and frequently unpredictable characters add layers of suspense, prompting the reader to question the authenticity of the relationships portrayed.
While the pacing falters slightly in the middle section, the overall storyline remains engaging. The novel's strength lies in its intricate plot, suspenseful pacing, and the deliberate creation of unreliable characters. Without giving away any spoilers, be prepared for a shocking revelation that completely reshapes the entire narrative—a pivotal moment that will undoubtedly leave you reeling.
In "The Wrong Daughter," Dandy Smith delivers a compelling blend of suspense, familial drama, and unexpected twists, ensuring that readers remain captivated from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley, Dandy Smith, and Embla Books for the ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for my honest review. The book is set to be released on February 08, 2024.
A psychological thriller, The Wrong Daughter (2024) by Dandy Smith is a tense tale with plenty of twists. Two sisters, Olivia thirteen and Caitlin ten, are left at home as their parents go out one evening. Caitlin awakens in fright to witness Olivia’s abduction by a masked man. Sixteen years later, Caitlin has a new life as a school teacher, fiancé and online business operator. She then receives a shocking telephone call from her father to say Olivia has returned home. As the sisters reunite, Caitlin begins to see a masked stranger and begins to experience strange things that her family believes she is imagining. Caitlin is battling to keep her life under control, as Olivia takes over causing even more suspicion. With its building tension, a rising body count and not-so-surprising reveals make for an enjoyable three and a half stars read rating. With thanks to Embla Books and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without inducement.
This book started off slowly and the two separate storylines were a bit distracting, but it all falls in to place at the end, making it a very good read
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review
A very good kidnapping thriller, full of twists and turns. A real page-turner that hooked me from the beginning. The book is also well written and the characters are realistic. Highly recommended
13-year-old Olivia and 10 year old Kaitlyn had one last perfect day before the night the stranger came in and rocked their world and Olivia was never seen again. At least not for the next 15 years Kaitlyn is now a teacher and is engaged to Oscar and she is now best friends with Olivia‘s childhood best friend Francis. When Olivia returns a lot of things happened that caused Kaitlyn to believe this can’t possibly be her sister. There is a second POV with Eleanor and Heath a brother and sister who are sexually involved with each other she is 17 and he is 19 and she is holy in love with her brother they were orphaned when they were younger and is supposed to be being raised by their uncle but he basically leaves them to their own devices in the grand mansion while he lives his life. And the other POV while Kaitlyn is trying to prove Olivia isn’t who she claims Olivia basically helps her only prove that she is insane. Well until the end happens! I find more and more books are changing and characters in books act less like real people and more like cartoon versions. I mean for one thing where Olivia came back she didn’t want to call the police despite being missing for 15 years and her parents were A-OK with that not to mention they didn’t even ask where she had been and her sister was such a puddle of Jell-O even after decades of her sister being missing she still couldn’t mention her name. these are just minor examples I have bigger issues with the book like Kaitlyn freaking out when Olivia wanted to take a shower because she said she was going to wash away evidence I mean it’s not like she had been kidnapped for a few hours she had been gone for 15 years. I would like to say I love this book but was too busy rolling my eyes and thinking yeah… Right! It is rare to find a great thriller book these days and the authors that write them are even fewer this is the second book about sisters I have read by Dandy Smith and I thoroughly enjoyed the other one which I think was called one small mistake but this one not so much. It was too overdramatized and I know a lot of people enjoyed it I just did not. They do have a lot of twists in the book and I do think most people will enjoy it and so I recommended on that account but as far as whether I liked it or not… Not really. I do want to think ambla books Anne Net Galley for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thank you Netgalley. This was a great read! The story was suspenseful and had me reading way past my bedtime. The characters were well drawn and relatable. This is a kidnapping thriller with a heck of a twist. Highly recommend
This one had a slow start for me and it did take me a while to fully get into it. It was still a very enjoyable and fast thrilling read.
13 year old Olivia gets snatched from her house, while her sister Caitie watches in terror as a masked man takes her away from her family. Years pass and Caitie believes she will never see her again. Out of the blue, Olivia reappears… but is it really her sister? Or is it a manipulative imposter?
I really enjoyed this book! Twisty, suspenseful and full of untrustworthy and unlikeable characters, it definitely kept me turning the pages. I was kept guessing at how Elinor tied in to Caitie and enjoyed the dual aspect of the two stories. I was 100% behind Caitie and it had my heart racing towards the final chapters.
This was my first read from Dandy Smith and I would certainly read another.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Embla Books for my advanced copy.
