I went into this not expecting to love it quite as much as I did. When I say I really loved it, I genuinely haven't been able to write this review for a week because I had no idea how & what to write to do it justice and without spoiling it. Im going to try and keep this short and sweet...

All the devils is a dark academia, witchy, romantasy book that captures just how much love influences us as beings. the world building in this was nothing short of amazing. I love that it went between the human realm and the underworld. The gods & monsters were all so well described and very interesting to learn about. I will say there was a lot going on throughout reading so I sometimes did feel lost, but it was never lost in a bad way: I wasn't having to force myself to read it and I wasn't bored whilst lost, just more intrigued.

When Andy gets to the building school she is immediately thrown into the thick of it all. She uncovers secrets, almost dies, realises her sister was never as she seemed and almost became a member of a secret society. Andy really grew into herself, before she was kind of a shadow to her sister. Violet was made out to be the most incredible person Andy had met, but I am really glad Andy came into herself and realised she was almost as invaluable as her sister. Jae was ultimately my favourite character, he was beyond mysterious and also super cute. The romance between the two was beautifully done, I found myself really rooting for their happy ever after.

I don't want to say too much about the plot without ruining it, but trust me when I say this book is no short of entertaining. The pace was very quick from the get go, you got thrown right in and never really had a moment of peace. The ending was well written and I love that it was slightly open to interpretation and that it was left open for another book. Which I am beyond excited about because the author said there will be a sequel!!

thank you to net galley and Michael Joseph for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review.

There's so much I want to mention about this book but it would spoil too much 😂.

The pacing was ok but this book is very much a slow burn. Things are gradually revealed, clues are slowly pieced together and bonds are tested.

I loved the characters. Yes some of them seemed a little immature at times but that's because they're young and scared.

I did find it a bit annoying that everytime Andy had a question, she was ignored, despite playing quite an important role in everything that was happening.

The atmosphere was so creepy and mystical and I wanted to know more and more about the magic itself.

One or two plot lines did seem obvious to me but I did like how everything was woven together towards the end.

The world building was good. I would've like an extra POV, though. Maybe from one of the demons or a member of the group.

The last 5% was heartbreaking and I felt so sad for Andy and Jae.

Is it wrong that I want Anubis, the God of Death, to pine after me too? 😂

I hope there will be a sequel because the ending left me craving more!

I went into this really excited with its concept, but the execution didn't work out. This story follows Andy, who takes the place of her presumably dead sister at an elite boarding school to uncover the mystery of her death. However, the main thing that put me off personally was Andy herself. From the first page itself, she came off as rather entitled and stubborn - from thinking she was superior to friends who were doing their best to help her, to throwing all the opportunities she got at this elite school away to dash recklessly into plans, to being unaccepting of the truth when it is eventually revealed. Moreover, I found the plot quite straightforward; it didn't really lead anywhere, and the stakes of the entire story weren't clear to me. I'm sure some people might enjoy the mythological nature of this book, but for me, the dislikeability of the main character is just a hard pill to swallow.

There were elements of this book I did really enjoy, but I found the actual prose quite difficult to get along with.

I didn't think the characters were fully fleshed out, and the main character was a bit flat. I also thought the book suffered with a few pacing issues as the ending just seemed to chuck so much information at you.

I did enjoy the blending of different past belief systems (Egyptian, Roman, Greek etc) and would have loved for there to have been more of that.

Going into this I was unsure if it was for me or not. These style of books I'm hit or miss with. Thankfully this was a hit.
There's moments where the atmosphere left me feeling a little uncomfortable, in a good way.
I spent the whole book trying to figure everything out. How thinks worked and why the society was doing it.
By the end I'm left wanting more. I need to see where things progress.

Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC.

I really enjoyed this story and it moved along at a good pace and the tension in some of the scenes was incredible. I would describe this book as a cross between dark Academia and Horror. I Loved the characters especially Andromeda. The stakes and the goals of each of the characters is made clear pretty early on in the story. The scenes had me turning the pages to find out what was happening next. I loved the gods included especially Egeria, the only mention I have heard of this goddess is on the TV Series Stargate SG1. The twist at the end was fantastic and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Dark Academia, Intrigue and spooky stories.

I stopped reading this book at 64% because I finally accepted that I couldn’t get into it. Every chapter up to this point was a struggle to read, whether it was because of the over-the-top prose or the one-dimensional protagonist, I am not sure. I know I didn’t finish reading the book, but I know that I did read enough that I should be able to tell you a single thing about the protagonist, but all I know is a list of facts about her sister and what I assume is the love interest and everyone in the story except her. The conversations between her and the assumed love interest became so repetitive at points - a series of questions answered with questions answered with vague “I’ll explain later”s - that chapters seemed to pass with no development to the plot.

There was certainly a lot of potential which caught my attention in the first place: secret societies, demonic magic, dark academia with mythology. It was a promising start, but I unfortunately found myself so let down as the book progressed that I was skim-reading until I could convince myself to give up.

I really wanted to like this book, the synopsis was really interesting and is the genre that I am into. However, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped.

I didn’t like the writing style and found it repetitive. You can highlight something as being important to the story without repeating it every paragraph, yes the tattoo may be important but I really don’t need to hear about it constantly.

I didn’t enjoy this book, but I’m sure others will.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me. The whole elite school and modern day mashup of mythologies turned me off. I was quite interested in the sisterly love and that part of the story but I can't get into it enough to be interested to finish it. I am certain this book will find its readers and those who are interested in a school setting story, filled with secrets, mysterious societies and mythology would have a blast. I am not one of them and I think my review wouldn't do it justice, especially since it would take me long to read because I wouldn't be enjoying it. It is by no means a reflection on the author's writting or abilities. I hope the readers who will love this kind of book, find it and have a great time! I would say it felt like Pretty Little Liars but with magic and more set in a school.

I liked the idea of the book but this book was not for me.

I was not attached to the story or the characters
I’m so sad cause I was really loooking forward to it

Actual Rating: 4,5 ⭐️

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a very entertaining read.

Plot

While Andy Emmerson is grieving the loss of her sister Violet, she finds out that Violet is still alive during the burial. In an attempt to locate her and learn the truth, she enrols in Ravenswood Academy. The eerie school demonstrates that there is more going on than just kids' desire for high marks. In order to discover the truth, Andy has to pursue a series of hints that include monsters, devils, secret societies, and the senior named Jae Han. She never would have predicted the deeper and more perilous price she would have to pay to bring Violet home.

This book had me hooked from the very first page. The mystery of what happened to her sister and what was going on in the school was really well done. I always wanted to know what would happened and wanted to try to discover the truth alongside Andy. It had very good twists, especially the ending.

Characters

Andy

Andy was a character that was suffering a lot with what happened to her sister. She was very brave and resilient during the whole novel. Her main focus was trying to discover the truth and she did all she could to uncover what was really happening in the school.

Jae

I really liked Jan since his first appearance. The twist his character had was also really good. He was a very good character who wanted to help Andy uncover the truth.

Violet

Violet is a character about whom I have mixed feelings. She suffered a lot and she had a terrible disease. I understand some of the reasons for the things she did, but at the same time, some of those parts were really horrific. I also liked the relationship between her and Andy. It was a good realistic one. They really loved each other, but at the same time, they had completely different ideas.

Regina, Melinda, Eric and Luciano

They were Violet's friends and what a bunch of horrible people. I really hated them all and honestly, they deserved what happened to them at the end.

Writing

The writing was good. I loved the descriptions, it really helped feeling the gothic vibes of the school and the atmosphere in general. The magic system was well explained and I liked how she incorporated the fantasy elements within the modern setting.

Romance

I liked the romance. However, it wasn't the main point of the story and it shows. I wish the author could have spent more time developing their romance. I felt a little rushed in some parts.

Final Thoughts

I believe it is a good urban fantasy novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and honestly review an advanced reader’s copy of this book.

For a Dark Academia book, not a whole lot of Academia in this.
The pacing in this is very rushed, to the point where I feel like the progression of time just doesn’t matter. This book is almost just a bunch of scenes stuck together with tape, hoping it somehow makes a cohesive story.

I think all that isn’t helped by the characters. How Andy manages to trust Jae so easily when he is clearly the sketchiest person here is a miracle. There’s a whole portion where she just follows his lead, and while she does question his sketchiness, she doesn’t push when he clearly brushes her off. And it’s incredible frustrating. It just makes it feel like she doesn’t have a lot of agency.

Look, the idea is great, the execution of it is mid. A lot of people will probably really like this. If you read a lot of YA, if you love dark academia vibes, this is uk your alley. It just wasn’t really up mine.

All the devils by Catelyn Wilson
4 stars
A blend of horror and fantasy in a dark academia setting, this is a great book for fans of Ninth House and Wednesday. Full of arcane secret societies, a blend of Egyptian pantheon and themes from Greek mythology; this book had me hooked.
The first chapter ended on an intriguing possibility which propelled me to be invested in Andy and what happened next. The early chapters were shorter to change the scene quickly and introduce us to new concepts with the longer chapters towards the latter half of the book, as the drama started to unfold.
Jae was an interesting MMC with many plot twists regarding him, the developing relationship between him and Andy had me cheering for a happy ending for the two.
Andy’s character got better as the pages got into triple digits, I did find her to be a little one dimensional, however I think the author wrote her character in that way to show the switch from dependent and naïve to independent and more knowledgeable with a backbone.
I would have liked to see more academia; class time as we read one scene and a little more of the magic system explained but if you’re a fantasy reader you can take a leap of imagination to fathom most of it.
All in all though, a great ending and the potential of another book?
Thanks to Penguin Random House for the opportunity to read an ARC on NetGalley.co.uk.

What a book! It was perfection. Beautifully written. I loved it!

Secret society, demons, gods, revenge, dark and spooky. What more could you want?

What a thrilling read. I was drawn in from the first page. From the halls in Ravenswood school, to the dark forest-like underworld, what a beautiful setting for this dark yet romantic story. It was captivating. So many twists and turns that kept me guessing right until the end.

The story follows Andromeda (Andy) who is grieving the loss of her sister, but she doesn't think everything is as it appears. Joining her sister's socialite boarding school, Ravenswood, looking for answers, she stumbles across a secret society and the demons of the underworld.

Add this to your tbr immediately. You won't regret it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for allowing me to read an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.

All The Devils is about young Andromeda Emmerson who, after her sister inexplicably shows up dead at her boarding school, embarks on a journey of dark rituals. gods, demons and secret societies to discover the truth behind her sister's death. Because things don't seem right and she knows despite everything that her sister is still out there somewhere.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere created in this book and the magic system was so cool! I'm a sucker for a spooky school setting.

I really wish some of the peripheral characters were more fleshed out and in some places the book couldn't seem to commit to Egyptian mythology and combined various others without much explanation for the heavy preference for Egyptian myth. Overall I really enjoyed it and it seems that this is setting up for another book, although it would be great as a standalone.

When this was approved on Netgalley, the email said
“Reader, approach this book with caution. The story inside these pages is darker and more dangerous than you might imagine and the price for the truth is deadly”.
And to tell you that this did not make me more excited to read it, would be a lie.

I love a thriller mystery, and combined with magic and demons and all that good stuff, this was one that I could not put down. There were twists and turns throughout and the story kept me on my toes all the way to the end.

Lately, I’ve read a lot of fantasy romance, and a fantasy thriller, with vibes similar to that of Wednesday and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, was a welcome change.

The story revolves around Andy, who is grieving the loss of her sister. She doesn’t feel that the full story has been shared and so she begins to investigate her sister’s death herself, with the help of a friend and what follows can only be described as dark and out of this world.

This is 100% a book that I would recommend to anyone a fan of the genre and is easily falling to my top reads of this year so far. Will definitely be preordering a physical copy to grace my shelves!

Dark and twisty, think gods, demons and secret societies.

After her sister dies, Andy doesn't quite believe it setting out to uncover the truth. This truth is much more twisty and Underworld focused than I imagined but I really enjoyed it. It's a dark story with enough intresting twists that you won't guess them all. The biggest reveal was around the 70% mark and I was really surprised and excited about it, especially since the build up seemed more focused on who was possessed... (I bet that tidbit gives you a good idea about where this story goes)

It reminded me a little of Kingdom of the Wicked with a more dark academia vibe to it. Very fun if you are interested in a mixture of mythology around the Underworld, especially Egyptian. Recommend as a fun, twisty fantasy thriller!

P. S. The writing is very beautiful

First of all I want to say - what a beautiful piece this book was!

To be honest I actually struggled a bit with getting into it, the main character was annoying and hard to follow her up, but when the event picked a speed I really got into it and found it hard to put the book down.

I liked how author made the mystery, “romantic” feature, fantasy entwined together that some moments I found chills running through me.

Thank you NetGalley for a chance to read this book!

This was full of mystery, secrets, lies and betrayal. I liked Jae and Andy’s thing they had going on and I didn’t predict the ending that we got. The vibes had everything - dark academia and horror especially! I particularly loved the setting of the boarding school and wish we got more of that.

I wish I felt more connected to Andy, particularly in the later stages of the book - mostly because I found her a bit too YA-esque for my liking. I ended up actually wishing we got to see more of Violet’s POV as she seemed like a more interesting character, seeing as she used magic and spells more often, whereas Andy wasn’t willing to do so.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the plot, the vibes, and the different settings in this book. This is an arc I would buy to have on my shelves!

A really cool plot and a great execution, binding together popular themes and making something new and fun to read.

Genuinely super impressed with this. Hats off to catelyn wilson and the publisher ! I will definitely be promoting this book on my socials and review sites so it gets the hype it deserves!

Andy has spent her whole life looking up to and idolizing her big sister, Violet. So when attending Violet's funeral and Andy finds evidence that her sister is still alive, she decides she will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and get her sister back. Set in the fabulously gothic Ravenswood Academy, Andy follows a trail of clues left by her sister to uncover her whereabouts.

This YA gothic horror murder mystery was a great read but I did have a few issues with it. I'll start with the things I did like, the setting of the school, misty little coastal town, and of course the underworld were all wonderfully written. The gothic imagery was a little over the top but in a way that I think works wonderfully n YA novels.

The plot drew me in immediately, I was captivated and was desperate to know just what happened to Violet. It's fast paced and really keeps you on your toes with loads of twists and turns. Catelyn Wilson really made the world her own with influences from a mix of the occult, Egyptian mythology, and Greek mythology.

"I would burn the world down for you if you only asked."
The romance subplot felt rushed, they went from reluctant allies in Andy's case to I love him with next to no scenes of them actually getting to know each other as people outside of their quest to find Violet. But once I got over the rush the romance was very sweet and tender, just with it had more time to develop outside of their shared goal.

But the thing I really feel let this novel down was the character development. Almost all the the characters felt really one dimensional. Andy especially, we don't find out anything about her outside of the idolism of her sister. We don't find out any of her likes, dislikes, or goals apart from finding Violet.
The villains were also quite flat, it would have been good to learn more about why they chose to go down the path that they did.
Jae and Violet on the other hand were both complex and well developed characters that had clear wants, needs, and motivations outside of the main plot.

I am excited to read any possible sequels that come from this as I would absolutely love to see more of Jae's story and hope to learn more about Andy as a person outside of her sister.

Thank you Catelyn Wilson, Michael Joseph, and NetGalley for this arc in exchange for and honest review.
