This book had so many twists and turns that it kept me hooked. I got confused when halfway through the book it seemed that parts of the plot were wrapping up but then more and more things kept happening and even when you think everything is wrapped up, you get thrown another twist that wraps up the whole story. Really enjoyed this book!
I loved behind closed doors I found it engrossing and a page turner this one has the same quality though I did not relate to the characters as much and felt less empathy.
B.A. Paris delivers another gripping psychological thriller with The Guest. The novel follows Iris, a woman whose life takes a dark turn when her husband’s old friend, Laure, moves into their home. As secrets unravel and tensions rise, Paris expertly builds suspense, leaving readers guessing who can be trusted and what will happen next.
What I particularly enjoyed was the slow-burn tension, which Paris masterfully sustains throughout the book. The characters are layered and complex, with hidden motives that keep the reader second-guessing. Paris also excels at creating a sense of claustrophobia within the domestic setting, making even ordinary situations feel dangerous.
However, while the plot twists are satisfying, some felt a bit predictable, especially for seasoned thriller readers. The pacing also lagged in a few places, making the middle feel slightly drawn out. Still, the final third of the book picks up the pace, leading to a tense and satisfying conclusion.
Overall, The Guest is a well-crafted psychological thriller with plenty of suspense and intrigue. Fans of B.A. Paris won’t be disappointed, and new readers will be drawn in by her knack for unsettling domestic dramas. A solid and enjoyable read!
This author for me never fails to deliver, and I am always anxiously awaiting the next amazing book. The story really grabs you from the start, and has the perfect amount of plot twists and turns. Highly recommend.
You can always rely on BA Paris to deliver a story full of shocking twists, unsavoury characters, uncomfortable situations and thought-provoking scenarios and The Guest has all these and more.
The story centres around Gabriel and Iris. A married couple who live in a beautiful house in the countryside. Gabriel is a GP (doctor) and Iris is an interior designer who return home from a holiday to find Laure at their house. Laure and her husband Pierre are their best friends who live in France. They met years ago on holiday and have keys to each others homes.
Laure is distraught, she’s left Pierre after discovering he has had an affair and asks if she can stay with Iris and Gabriel whilst she works out what to do for a week or so. However, that week or so becomes weeks and weeks and she’s slowly and surely wearing out her welcome, especially when her behaviour becomes rather questionable and creepy like wearing Iris’ clothes and rearranging their furniture and kitchen cupboards.
Things then take a rather sinister turn when Esme and Hugh move into the neighbourhood, together with a young man called Joseph who is their gardener.
However it’s the fact that no-one can get hold of Pierre during this time that warning bells are ringing. Why isn’t he in touch? When is Laure leaving? Who is Joseph and what is he hiding? So many questions!
If you enjoy slow burning, atmospheric, creepy psychological thrillers, then I would definitely recommend THE GUEST.
I feel so sorry for B A Paris when I pick up one of her books as I always compare it to one of my all time favourite culler, her debut, Behind Closed Doors, which I have recently realised, will be so hard to beat
Her latest novel is a real popcorn thriller book and I read it over the day whilst on the sofa hungover
B A Paris delivers a novel packed full of deceit and lies and characters who don’t really understand each other. Whilst the book was slightly unbelievably in places, it did exactly what it needed to. The book kept me engaged, focused and excited to read
I loved the Epilogue and it was that chapter that made this book for me. I had a suspicion, but I thought no surely not. Should have gone with my gut feeling. Thanks to the author for another great domestic thriller
Probably my second fave BA Paris book! Full of suspense and mystery and was surprised by the ending.....kept me hooked and wanting more; also very easy to read.
A really good holiday read! I raced through this in two days as it was an addictive , tense read with lots of unexpected twists. The short chapters also made it easy to keep on reading. So why does Iris and Gabriels’ unexpected guest become the unwanted guest? Why does Laure not want to go back to Paris?
A very unexpected twist at the end that reveals all. I certainly didn’t see it coming!
Many thanks to Netgalley and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
A massive thank you to netgallley and the publisher for my copy of this e-arc!
I normally love B.A Paris’ writing but unfortunately this is something that I felt myself needing to have to pick up rather than wanting to pick it up. I had to end as I didn’t want to know how the story went on.
As much as this book isn’t for me I can say that I do love the authors writing usually and feel many people would enjoy this
Slow to start but really thrilling when I got in to it and a real page turner. What a twist at the end ! I have read a number of BA Paris books and though I enjoyed this one it hasn’t been my favourite , definitely worth a read though!
I have read other novels by this author, and found this one a simple, easy to follow story! It was quite similar to her others and definitely had the same feel to it! Did have me guessing and the ending was different to what I expected.
I do enjoy most BA Paris books and whilst I did really enjoy this and her twists her often very good, this wasn’t the best. Still enjoyable just didn’t grab me like she often does.
Thank you to @netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was really really stuck with what to review this because in some ways it did definitely deserve a 4* however I had to go with my overall feelings and as a big lover of thrillers that's what I've taken into account. And there were two things that lowered the rating for me which I will go onto..
The first thing and the main thing what I struggled with is it was such a slow paced book. And for me, I love it fast and on the go with twists throughout. And that's just personal preference. I didn't start fully enjoying it til 60% through and for me that was too far in. But a good book for me has to be that I can't wait to pick it back up!
I did guess quite a lot of the story lines and I did like how it all happened past the 60% mark.. There was some good twists and although I did see them coming, there was one or two I didn't and they were explosive. And I loved the characters especially Gabriel! Absolutely hated Laure until the truth came out then I absolutely felt bad 🤣
The ending. Well this is where I got mainly mixed feelings because that epilogue. Wow. It was twisty and honestly not what I was expecting. Was a complete twist even though with Laure I had a feeling but the rest was a surprise. But I couldn't help but feel like something just wasn't right. I just felt disappointed slightly and wasn't sure how I felt overall about the book which was the main reason I gave it the rating I did overall.
What an addictive and gripping read! This was my first B.A. Paris book, and I simply have to read the rest of their work now. This was a book full of intrigue and darkness, that left me breathless whilst reading.
B. A. Paris never disappoints!! I couldn't put this book down and loved the twist in it, I did not expect it!! Very quick and easy read for me!
After finding myself in a bit of a reading slump I decided to give The Guest a go and ended up devouring it in less than 24 hours.
Having read some of B A Paris’ other novels, I had expected to enjoy this one but certainly expect to be so hooked!
A psychological thriller with a few somewhat predictable twists and perhaps one or two too many characters, The Guest mightn’t be the best I’ve ever read but it was definitely one of the more attention gripping thrillers I’ve read in recent times!
Thank you Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for this book.
I usually love B A Paris' books, but for me there was something missing with this one.
I liked the storyline, the characters and the twists but I just couldn't put my finger on what was missing.
It was a bit .... just not quite there!
Some books by B.A. Paris I have adored and others i just havent been able to find my feet with. This one was a bit middle ground for me, i liked the story, i enjoyed the characters and twists but i just didnt feel invested and addicted. I can't put my finger on what was missing it was just a bit placid
Another author I never miss a book from is BA Paris but I’d have to say this isn’t my favourite read. I found it lacked the usual suspense and whilst I enjoyed the twist at the end, it felt slightly drawn out compared to other books. A 4* from me, good but not the best!
Not the best BA Paris book. I felt as though it lacked suspense and any kind of plot twist. I’ve loved all other BA Paris books that I’ve read, they’ve really gripped me and I’ve finished them in a day or two, unfortunately this one didn’t live up to that.
