This is a good and easy to read domestic drama with some very interesting twists and plot surprises along the way.
Successful couple Iris and Gabriel are just about holding on to their marriage, mainly for the sake of their beloved daughter. When half of a couple they are friends with arrives from Paris saying she and her husband need time apart it only draws Iris and Gabriel further away. Neighbour Eve seems to bring some light to the situation until a guest of hers brings further intrigue into the domestic scene.
The plot was well thought out and I mainly enjoyed the characters, although I felt that Iris should stand up for herself more. I really didn’t see the ending coming, although thinking back there were many clues along the way to expose the many lies that most of the characters had told.
Well worth a read and would recommend if a reader of domestic drama and a good twist in the tail.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another great story from B A Paris. A slower pace than previous books but with lots of twists to keep the reader guessing, right up to the final chapter, this is a book I would highly recommend.

When Iris & Gabriel come home from holiday they discover that their friend Laure has moved in using their spare key. Laure & husband Pierre have been friends for years but Laure left Pierre in Paris after discovering that he had been unfaithful & had a daughter she knew nothing about. Understanding her distress they are happy to have her to stay but as the old saying goes, "Fish & visitors tend to smell after a few days!" Iris bears the brunt of it, especially when Laure starts wearing her clothes, rearranging the furniture & has even been sleeping in their bed. Iris is thankful for the new couple that have moved into the area to give her a break! However their gardener, who has come to help Gabriel is a bit of a concern. Getting in touch with Pierre seems problematic.
This is a hard book to review. I am a fan of B.A. Paris but did not get 'grabbed' by this story. I really wanted to shake both Iris & Gabriel (although in their place I don't know how I would have insisted Laure leave) The ending was totally unexpected & raised my rating from 3 to 4* Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
Iris and Gabriel have just arrived home from holiday where a shock awaits them. One of their best friends, Laure, has moved into their home. Sleeping in their bed, rearranging their furniture, even wearing Iris clothes because she left her husband Pierre over his confession of an affair. Iris and Gabriel try their best to be supportive, whilst dealing with their own issues, but as Laures mood becomes more unpredictable things reach breaking point.
This was super fast paced and had me gripped from the first page. With so many twists and turns I never knew which way the story would go. I didn't want to put this down and the ending will shock as I really didn't expect it. A really great immersive read highly recommend.
Gabriel & Iris 40 something married couple who find themselves with a lot going on. Gabriel finds the body of a young man in the local quarry and their French friend Laure has surprised them with a long term visit after leaving her husband Pierre.
With Gabriel off work, Iris making new friends who have just moved to the village and Laure seemingly in no rush to leave there is alot going on.
The book is well written with a surprise ending that I never saw coming. Short, snappy chapters that make you want “just one more” and plenty going on.
Thank you to NetGalley, publisher and author for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
B A Paris does it again, fast and well paced with twists galore!!! A suspenseful thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end, with complex characters and a gripping narrative.
Another thriller by one of my favourite authors. In “The Guest” by BA Paris we hear a tale full of secrets, betrayal, and unexpected visitors. Iris and Gabriel return home from a holiday to find their friend Laure has occupied their house.
Laure’s unexpected arrival causes a large amount of tension and Iris and Gabriel feel Laure presence very invasive. The tension could be cut with a knife as the atmosphere becomes fraught due to Laure’s behaviour which becomes increasingly erratic. Iris and Gabriel struggle to deal with the complexities of their friendship.
The story is well told with the usual twists and turns to keep you guessing as we learn the intersecting lives of the characters and the layers of secrets and hidden motivations.
Not my favourite B.A Paris novel by a long way but still a decent read. I would rate it 3.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I think this is my favourite book by this author so far. The story is somewhat far fetched but that is the joy of fiction!
The story focuses on Iris and Gabriel, who return home to find an old friend has moved into their home. While trying to unravel the reasons behind this, they find themselves in the midst of a murder spree! Everyone around them starts being found dead! Fingers are pointed in all directions and there appear to be many people around with motives and means.
But someone is not a reliable narrator and the twist at the end I did not see coming!
The beginning of the book was a little slow but the foundations had to be laid for the big reveal. The question is do we ever really know what anyone is capable of?
I love B.A Paris books but sadly this one just wasn’t for me. I thought the story wasn’t really going anywhere for the first half of the book and there were too many bodies piling up in the second.
I thought the conversations between the family didn’t come across as realistic and I didn’t warm to any of the characters.
There was a scene where Beth says she isn’t staying for dinner as going to Esme’s but then says she’s tired and going to bed and when she leaves (presumably to go to bed) Iris mentions she is going to Esme’s. It was all very confusing as the reader.
The only (great) twist was in the epilogue at the very end. Sadly this one just wasn’t for me
I just love B.A Paris books and this one was brilliant. Right from the start you get hooked and need to know how things will turn out. I was completely smitten and enjoyed every minute of it. The story flows well and has a great ending. Definitely recommend this one! Thank you #netgalley
Another fabulous read from B A Paris, her books just keep getting better and better .Iris and Gabriel come home from a holiday to find their best friend Laure living in their house ,wearing Iris's clothes and living in their bedroom !! she is distraught as her husband Pierre has been unfaithful and has a daughter she didn't know about .Laure is a very annoying drama queen seemingly taking over Iris's and Gabriel's home but they are very kind to her .The story is fast paced with some twists and there are lies and deceit . The characters though not all particularly likeable are relatable ,the story is great and the epilogue left my head spinning with surprise.
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC .
BA Paris is an author whose books are always on my radar as I know I’m in for a good read. And this is no exception - it is another addictive domestic thriller that kept me turning the pages and kept me guessing.
Iris and Gabriel return from a much needed holiday following a traumatic few months to find their friend Laure in their house. She has left her husband after discovering he has fathered a child with another woman - initially happy to have her, she begins to outstay her welcome and strain Iris’ and Gabriel’s relationship further. At the same time they form a friendship with a newly arrived couple in the village, but a relationship that seems like it might ease the tension soon adds additional complications …
This is a book that unfolds slowly but with so many unanswered questions it keeps you turning the pages, intrigued to see how it all comes together, however frustrating you find some of the characters. And when the denouement comes it properly smacks you in the face - which is when you applaud the skill of the author and why I will always happily pick up her books.
Tension Fuelled…
Iris and Gabriel are in for a surprise upon their return from holiday. Surprise soon turns to shock but, in no time at all, that shock becomes something way, way worse than anyone could have ever imagined. A tension fuelled suspense with a deftly drawn and keenly observed cast of characters, a pacy, propulsive and claustrophobic plot laced with drama, hair bend twists and a surprising denouement. Gripping, tense and immersive.
Iris and Gabriel arrive home from holiday to find a friend who has taken over their home sleeping in their bed and wearing Iris clothes. She has left her husband and asks to stay with them for a while, but with the baggage she brings, how quick will she outstay her welcome!
Oh my ! What a ride that was !
This was a brilliantly twisty domestic thriller I was gripped from the start. The twists just kept coming, and that ending 😳 would definitely recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley, Hodder and Stoughton, and B.A. Paris for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Another pageturner from BA Paris, centered around three couples; Gabriel and Iris, their best friends Pierre and Laure, and Hugh and Esme who have just moved into the same village as Iris and Gabriel.
Laure turns up at Iris's house, distraught at the news that Pierre has been having an affair. She leans on her friends for support and guidance, almost becoming Iris's shadow and accompanying her everywhere. In the meantime, Esme & Hugh are updating their house in time for the birth of their new baby. They are helped by handsome gardener Joseph.
The book opens with a literal bang, as a house explodes - we then go back 4 months to find out what got us to this point.
Its entertaining, if a little far-fetched, but kept me engaged.
Another novel with an unexpected twis from B.A. Paris. A lot of strange things happen but there is not even a clue of who, how and why. It keeps you guessing to the end.
I was glad to be invited to read thisadvanced copyl Thank you @netgalley and publishers.
This is an enjoyable thriller that keeps you guessing, although some of the characters were quite annoying and there were a couple of far-fetched moments.
Saying that, it's a well-written, quick read with a few twists and it all came together at the end with an excellent epilogue.
Many thanks to the publisher, author, and Netgalley for the ARC.
I have enjoyed many of the authors previous novels and the Guest is a convoluted and twisted take of a domestic thriller. Unfortunately, there were too many characters for me to engage with the narrative. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Another great story from B A Paris. I felt this one was slower paced than previous books but the characters were well described and lots of twists along the way to keep the reader guessing. This is a book I would definitely recommend.
Grateful thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review
I’m starting this by saying I’m a huge B.A. Paris fan, she’s one of my favorite authors since her first novel “Behind Closed Doors” and The Guest did not disappointed. This is such an addictive phycological thriller that had me hooked in the story immediately.
We follow Iris and Gabriel returning from their holiday to discover an unexpected visitor in their home. The different characters of this story collide over the course of summer, we see relationships become strained and secrets that are starting to reveal themselves while jealousy and tension starts to boil.
The characters are well developed and the mix of emotions that this book creates is fantastic. We can feel the rage and frustration of them, and it’s such a roller-coaster of emotions throughout the story. I really enjoyed this book, I felt like I dived into a complex web of deceit that becomes more and more intricate as the story goes. It kept me gripped until the very end, I couldn´t put it down.
Thank you, NetGalley & the publisher, for approving me to read this arc and write this review.
