This is another excellent book by BA Paris. I’ve really enjoyed other books by this author, and this one certainly didn’t disappoint.
I was quickly drawn into the plot and characters. I finished it last week, but it has definitely stayed with me.
Overall 4.5 stars and it’s very recommended.
I ADORE B A Paris! Behind closed doors is still one of my all time favourite recommendations to anyone new to the thriller genre, so I was thrilled when I was accepted to read The Guest.
I really love how Paris manages to get you to fully immerse in her writing, the entire way through I was looking for red herrings and trying to connect the dots to past and present (no flashbacks, but lots of previous story linking in closely to this one). I loved the characters, they weren't particularly pleasant but they were well built and had impressive backstories. I'd have liked a little more from Beth but it wasn't especially vital to have any more of what we had.
I liked how this book was wrapped up, very clever - back to the BA PARIS That I LOVE!. It took you in a different direction than what you were expecting, so I definitely recommend.
A really gripping read with a total jaw-dropping ending! A really well-written, clever thriller! One that I'll recommend to fellow thriller fans and I'll be pushing up BA Paris' other books that I haven't got through yet.
BA Paris is a go to author for me, I know I'll get a well paced thrilled with satisfying plot and interesting twist. The Guest certainly lived up to these expectations.
3.5 Stars.
A classic BA Paris read - twisty, turny, psychological. An enjoyable few hours were spent reading The Guest, enjoying its well written characters and sense of mystery.
This read felt a lot slower than previous books by this author, which was a bit of a shock for me - it lacked the “grip” factor of previous novels unfortunately, although it was still a strong book.
Well written, fun read, this story is full of secrets, lies and self-preservation.
The characters are interesting, well developed and richly drawn in this intriguing novel.
Iris and Gabriel return from a break to find that their friend Laure has been staying in their house whilst they have been away. Laure has temporarily left Paris as she and her husband work out some marital issues. Days turn into weeks and there is little sign of Laure returning to her husband to work things out. Her stay is starting to put a strain on Iris and Gabriel’s already strained relationship. The story is told through two POV characters Iris and her husband Gabriel. Overall this was totally immersive, suspenseful and intriguing.
I read this in 2 sittings. Addictive and very enjoyable.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley UK for the ARC.
A long time family friend turns up to stay with no end date. Her marriage is ending due to the discovery that her husband has fathered a child.
Inserting herself in to every aspect of Gabriel and Iris life. Can they get on or will the friendship break down?
I absolutely love reading B A Paris books so I knew I would want to read this when it came out and was super happy when I got an advanced copy of it that I read it straight away without even knowing what the synopsis was.
One of the main reasons I love BA Paris books is because there are such fast books to read. You start one of these books and the next thing you know you have read the entire thing without even realising because it is just so easy to fall into the story and the writing.
The Guest was not my favourite BA Paris book. This book felt a little boring at times and a little mundane. The plot twists weren't very exciting and the big plot twist at the end kind of just felt thrown in to make the book a lot more dramatic than it actually was.
I still loved the writing in this book and easily fell into the story and the characters but I did not particularly care about any of the characters of the overall story.
Honestly, this book was just a fun few hours that I spent reading it but it definitely won't be one that I'll be obsessing over for a long time. I will be picking up any future BA Paris books though.
Thank you to the publisher for the advance copy of this book via Netgalley.
The Guest is a classic BA Paris, full of twists ansld turns and the kind of psychological thriller that keeps you turning pages. It isn't her best, on my opinion that remains The Breakdown, because for me the twists take a bit too long to show up and the story drags on and on, with repetitive dialogue and narrative, uncharismatic and flat main characters... it's not a mind blowing thriller but it did entertain me!
Outstandingly good
I have read this in one day and I cannot
Imagine there being any other way you could possibly read it without it being pure torture
Wow - the ending blew my mind. One of my all time favourite books was Behind Closed Doors but this is such a close contender.
So many twists, one I did guess but not the others and definitely not the ending. Wow ! This book kept on giving until the last few lines and I was hooked.
I don’t think it’s possibly to enjoy a book more than this.
What a way to end 2023
I’ve read most of B.A Paris’s books and have generally found them enjoyable. The Guest in question is Laure - friend of married couple Iris and Gabriel who come home from holiday to find her ensconced in their house. Laure has left her husband Pierre after a revelation about their relationship and is seemingly reluctant to make any efforts to reconcile with him. Suffering from their own issues in their marriage, Laure’s presence quickly becomes an issue.
This was a good read - a bit convoluted and preposterous in places, but enjoyable.
This is only the second book I have read of BA Paris, the first a while ago so I hadn’t remembered the style of writing to expect.
It was easy to get into with the characters being clearly defined and I kept wanting to get back to the book to read more.
It’s not a deep psychological thriller as some of the plot is predictable, however the ending was not what I was expecting at all which was a nice surprise as I love a book with a twist!
I will now be hunting down the other books by the Author and hope they have the same ease to read and twists!
A gentle thriller with lots of characters to keep track of, but I mostly enjoyed it. Thanks for the free copy.
Laure is the ultimate nightmare houseguest, she arrives unexpectedly and takes over the household. Will she ever leave? I could feel Iris's pain, she wanted her house and family back but Laure seemed determined to stay.
However, the book veered into a completely different direction than just the creepy houseguest and became a thriller. I have to admit I did not see where this one was going and the small town cosy neighborhood soon turned into a hotbed of murder and scandal!
I really enjoyed this book, it kept you guessing until the very end.
I love this author and this was another gripping tale. I loved the tension bought about by the overstayed welcome of their friend and the strange circumstances. I will admit there weren’t many surprises, the twists were easy enough to guess, but it was well written enough to be an enjoyable read and the epilogue at least was a surprise!
I've always thought B.A. Paris is an underrated author. I know ratings on Goodreads are all about opinions but I always wonder why her books don't have a higher rating.
This was another cracking read from her which combines a number of different threads and pulls them together in an exciting conclusion. We have Iris and Gabriel who return from holiday to find their friend Laure living in their home. Laure has recently split with her husband Pierre but she is clearly not telling the full story. Enter deaths, lies, affairs, new babies and you have a good mystery ensuing.
The only thing I would say is that I did pretty much guess the full story and twists and I am someone who never sees the ending coming!
Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Iris and Gabriel have been friends with Laure and Pierre for many years, and it was no surprise when they found Laure at their house after she had an argument with Pierre, when returning from a holiday.
They told her she could stay as long as she needed to. Though the argument between her and Pierre seemed to be serious, as he has recently discovered he has a kid.
In the meantime, they make friends with Esme and Hugh, who have just moved to the village.
Lies and secrets will slowly be uncovered.
A slow burner but superbly written psychological thriller.
Thank you to Netgalley for my first ever opportunity to read a book before it’s release date. I chose to request this book as I’m a huge fan of B.A.Paris and I’ve been reading her books from the very beginning. I couldn’t contain my excitement when I got accepted to read this book. Having said that, I have to say that it isn’t one of my favourite books from this author. Usually I find myself not being able to stop turning the pages due to the twists and turns that she usually throws at you but I found that the whole way through this book it was really just telling a story. To my surprise when I finished the last chapter I thought to myself, what have so just read? And THEN I read the epilogue and there was all the twists and turns I’d been waiting for. The overall story was brilliant but I just wish all the twists weren’t stuck at the end of the book. Still it hasn’t put me off further books from this author and I’ll continue to loyally follow her journey of writing over the coming years.
This is a great thriller. It pulled me in and had me looking forward to snatching time to read it. The characters are great, really believable and all different. Gabriel and his torment about Charlie threaded through the story and I found his character was the one that stayed with me. The story itself is engaging and intriguing - and then there's a plot twist I never saw coming. It came out of the blue but still fits perfectly. Thriller fans will love this.
I love B A Paris and am a huge fan but this just didn't hit the spot for me....... except for that twist at the end, that was what saved the book.
For me this was a slow burn that I struggled to get into, there was a lot of focus on Iris and Gabriel, paving the way for what was to come.
Don't get me wrong it was a good read, it just wasn't one of her best.
