Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
The plot of this book was clever, and topical, making it a better crime read than some of the previous books in the series. However I think Jemima's character is extremely unpleasant: she demonstrates no respect for her new senior officer but behaves high-handedly with police in the team she is assigned to work with - respect must be earnt! She swears at them and bullies them and again claims of 'misogyny' are used as an excuse for her attitude. Some readers may think she is a strong woman in a man's world, I think she is a poor leader, although I recognise that the author has done a good job of building a realistic character.
I am enjoying this series. A fantastic gripping storyline set in a beautiful location. I look forward to reading more
I only read 20% of this book. I was not aware that it was part of an ongoing series until after I had started it. It seemed to explain a lot of backstory fairly well, but with my not having any real attachment to the characters from previous books, it seemed like a lot more personal problems than investigation of a crime. The thing that made me put this one down, though, was the lead detective Jemima's terrible attitude toward the local police. I realize the point was to get them on board and not give her the same terrible attitude, but it made her very unlikable that some of the first actual dealings with the crime were belittling subordinates. Not rating elsewhere as I did not finish.
4.25/5 stars! Woah! This story took me on a wild ride. I have never read anything else by author Gaynor Torrance and this is the 6th installment in the DI Jemima Huxley Thrillers series, so I had zero expectations. This is a twisted dark mystery and I was fully onboard for it. This read like the most intense episode of Bones ever. Jemima is a gritty determined detective and I need to go back and read the first 5 books ASAP.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Loved this one. Twisty and thrilling. A great read and a great writer. I can't praise this book enough I was completely hooked all the way through. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Detective Jemima Huxley book 6.
This is the first book I've read from this author. Although book 6 in the series I was able to read this without needing to read the earlier books. But the details it did give made me want to read the previous books!
I loved this main character. She is ballsy and is not frightened of anyone.
So, onto the plot. Detective Jemima Huxley is called out to a gruesome scene in an isolated rural valley town.
In Rhymney Valley, an area long-since left behind after the closure of the mines, two men have been bound and hanged from a strange old iron structure.
From the decomposition, it’s clear the bodies have been here some time. Birds have pecked the men’s faces to ribbons. They both have something carved onto their foreheads — but in their current state, it’s impossible to work out what.
Jemima sets up a task force in the nearest station, but there are soon rising tensions between local police and these big-city detectives. The old guard have never encountered a woman in charge before. For Jemima’s team, it’s like stepping back in time.
Can they find the killer before anyone else dies?
This is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

There's a new and somewhat unpleasant DCI to oversee DI Huxley and the team. He sends them out to a rural area of Wales where a gruesome double murder has been found. There the investigation hits a snag due to resentment by the local force and a distinct level of incompetence among some of them. This view is magnified when Jemima's team follows a concern of Jemima's husband regarding a spate of teenage suicides in the area. And then things get really hairy. The red herrings glow neon and the plot twists are too diabolical for words. The characters and countryside continue to be exceptional.
I requested and received an EARC from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you.
DCI Jemima Huxley is in rural Wales investigating a double murder but gets involved in older cases of teenagers who committed suicide, far too many for such a rural area she feels. She is benighted by masochistic dinosaurs of local police, at least at the start. Some come round and become assets to her team. All threads deal with 'outsiders', whether by colour, upbringing or simply because someone is different to the local tribe. A sad reflection on the human race. The murders are harrowing and gruesome but dealt with sympathetically as needed. Jemima has her own personal problems but equally have family and friends supporting her. A detailed, interesting police procedural. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
THE RHYMNEY VALLEY KILLINGS by Gaynor Torrance.
DI Jemima Huxley Crime Thriller Book 6.
Then Jemima hears about a spate of unexplained deaths among young people in the area. Could it be connected to these grisly murders? Whatever is going on out in these valleys is darker than anything Detective Jemima Huxley has ever seen. It will take everything she’s got to crack this case — before any more young lives are lost.
I really enjoyed this book. Twisty and gripping. Certainly didn't see that coming. I do like Jemima and her team. Looking forward to the next book. 4*.
Would like to thank netgalley for this book. It's another great one from this series
Alot of great characters with a fantastic storyline
4****
Jemima and her team get to go to a very rural part of Wales, trying to work together with the misogynist local officers. Two old bodies are found, and the beginning of the book focuses on this. It is quite graphic, and the book is a bit darker and grittier than the previous ones in the series. While they are investigating the old case several teenagers commit suicide in the region. Or are they suicides?
Another good book by Gaynor Torrance. Jemima is a vivid and powerful character, and it is enjoyable follow her and the team investigating cases. The setting in rural Wales, and the characters in the region are fantastic. Well worth the read.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy The Rhymney Valley Killings, the sixth novel to feature DCI Jemima Huxley of South Wales Police.
The bodies of two men are found bound and hanging from a local sculpture in the Rhymney Valley. Jemima and her new team are asked to investigate, but it’s not plain sailing with opposition from the local officers and unidentified bodies. Then the investigation takes a dark turn when the team uncovers an unusually large number of teen suicides.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Rhymney Valley Killings, which is a fast moving police procedural with the ultimate girl boss. I found it extremely satisfying as Jemima eviscerated (verbally only) the local misogynists and lazy officers. It’s a real treat to see a woman at the top of her game running a professional investigation.
Much of the early investigation revolves around identifying the bodies damaged by wildlife and exposure. Once that is done they can move on to motive, starting with a victimology that, when they get some answers, takes them down a dark but ultimately false trail, only to discover an even darker trail. It should be noted that far fetched as it may seem this trail is rooted in real life crime.
The novel is told exclusively from the investigative point of view, so there are plenty of unanswered questions and topical themes for the reader to chew on. I freely admit to not guessing in advance, so I was glued to the pages until the final, shocking reveal. I was impressed by the way the author approaches her themes. She takes a well known social issue and puts her own slant on it. It’s interesting.
The Rhymney Valley Killings is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher. I quite enjoyed this mystery story, had a great storyline and great characters and well worth a read.
I loved reading The Cardiff Killing's Gaynor Torrance so I was very excited to read this one. Reading books set in Wales is exciting enough but when it is coupled with murder and mystery it is even better!
I really enjoyed this read, although some of the descriptions were a bit too graphic at times. That aside, the characterisation is very good, I like Jemima, there is plenty of suspense and the plotting was interesting. The team work well together with Jemima definitely in charge! Set in Wales, the book opens with two brutal murders and the pace continues at a fast rate. if you like thrillers, this is one for you. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Once again another great Joffe book! They sure know how to pick their authors! Great book! This book had a bit of everything! It had high suspense, intrigue, action packed, high speed chases, murder, serial killers, some terrible racism, kidnapping, great police work, great who done it and some really crazy twist and turns! The storyline was So very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! Thank you Netgalley and Joffe books for sharing this book with me! Can't wait for more!
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
The two murders at the beginning of the book were very brutal and the subsequent paragraphs featuring the autopsies too lengthy for me...very graphic. Plus, I couldn't connect to the characters and therefore didn't finish the book. Sorry!
