Another cracking read by Claire Douglas! The Wrong Sister is full of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. The story had many layers yet I could follow the plot and I didn’t feel overwhelmed with characters. The tension hits from the first page right until the last. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy twisty thrillers and complex characters.
Fabulously twisty and scary and probably one of the most unputdownable books I've ever read. Completely impossible to guess the ending.
I was hooked from page 1. Each time that I was sure that I had guessed what was happening, the book took me in a different direction. This is a fantastic domestic thriller with an unexpected ending.
I’ve read Claire Douglas’s other books, but this is definitely my favourite.
This book had a great start that kept me turning the pages. The combination of the missing sister and the complicated lives of the remaining sisters, along with plenty red herrings kept me hooked. Wasn’t quite sure the incident with the man in Venice worked with the characters that were there, since he would have been looking for Kyle. Apart from that, really good read.
Tasha and Aaron live in a small Cotswold village with their twin girls. Tasha's high flying sister Alice offers them the use of her Venice apartment to rekindle their marriage whilst Alice and her husband Kyle looks after the children.
Days later Kyle has been killed in a burglary attempt and Alice badly injured. As the plot unfolds, all is not as it seems.
A twisting thriller that keeps you guessing until the last page
I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph Publishing for the chance to read and review this book
You swap lives with your sister and enjoy a romantic week away in Venice with your husband, indulging in luxury. But when you're away your brother in law is murdered and sister attacked. You then get a note through the door saying it was the wrong sister. What do you do?
This is the situation Tasha finds herself in, only made worse by the fact it's mere days before the anniversary of her baby sister disappearing all those years ago. Who's telling the truth and who's lying?
Told thought multiple points of view, Claire Douglas crafts a compelling plot which grabs you by the throat and doesn't let you go. It also feels sufficiently well grounded in reality with well crafted characters. I read this book in about two days as I just had to know what happened and how all the characters interconnected. A thriller which also asks questions about how far you'd go for the people you love.
The misdirection in this book was brilliant, I was so convinced I knew what had happened and then bam, I was so wrong. The story is brilliantly written and the characters have distinct personalities, I loved chapters being from different perspectives etc. A truly gripping read.
This was a slight deviation from the genre I usually read but I read the blurb and was intrigued.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
An easy read and one where the twists throughout were a surprise every time without complicating the plot.
A great pace, ideal length and interesting enough characters.
Read it in two days and it kept me awake enough into the small hours to want to finish it that night.
Many thanks.
This is an easy to read thriller with some great characters. There are a lot of coincidences that make the plot unbelievable in places, but it is an entertaining read and I enjoyed it. Probably not one that I would buy, but definitely one I would pick up from the library. Thank you to NetGalley, that author and the publisher for the review copy.
Ok I’m gonna need a minute.
This was Brilliant! I couldn’t out it down It kept me interested from the first chapter.
I really enjoyed getting to know the family and see what lies and secrets they all have.
It was definitely gripping with some amazing twists and turns. The ending was just I don’t even have words.
A brilliant mystery thriller with a fantastic story line brilliant characters and an amazing ending. I couldn’t really ask for more !!
This was such an easy read - I finished it in just a few days and it had me hooked from the start. The reason for this initially was how interesting I found the characters, particularly Tasha, one of the main characters, and her husband Aaron. They are parents to young twins and desperate for some time to themselves, and the strains of their relationship were very well written and relatable.
Tasha and Aaron are heading off for a romantic break in Venice, courtesy of an apartment swap with her sister Alice and her husband Kyle. Kyle and Alice are intimidating to Tasha, who feels she hasn't accomplished much in comparison with her high flying sister. But she's still looking forward to a long-overdue break with Aaron, and at first their holiday is the romantic break she'd hoped it would be.
But it's cut short very quickly when Kyle and Alice are attacked, forcing Tasha and Aaron to return home. The aftermath and the search for the truth about the attack brings a myriad of heartaches, suspicions and insecurities to the surface - for many characters. And there is a truly impressive plot twist that I didn't see coming but that also felt entirely plausible when it happened.
What I really enjoyed about the book was the characters and the writing. Tasha feels insecure about her marriage, and suspects Aaron of being interested in another woman, feeling that they have lost sight of making time for each other since having twins to look after. Aaron is reassuring, but there are enough little things to make us understand why Tasha can feel insecure.
The family tragedy that looms up as the book progresses is also very well done, and brings into the book Tasha and Alice's mother, Jeanette. She had a baby snatched, Holly, some 30 years ago and the whole family has been affected by it. Questions about whether Holly has survived, and if so where she could be, become intertwined with the plot about the attack.
There's a lot going on in the book and I found that I could read many pages without really noticing. There are enough characters and subplots to keep the reader gripped. In some ways the writing is relatively 'light' but in others it's quite serious about the nature of relationships, love and the things people will do to protect those close to them.
I would definitely recommend this and will be looking out for other novels from Claire Douglas.
Living in the village she grew up in, married with three year old twins. Life appears idyllic on the surface but her marriage is on the wobble, teen love has matured but the daily routine has put paid to romance.
The middle of three sisters but the youngest disappeared when she was a few months old, snatched from her pram outside the local shop.
Elder sister Alice is the high flyer, married in to wealth after a whirlwind romance, PhD and renowned scientist.
Alice and her husband lend Tasha and husband their second home in Venice for a romantic getaway. Will this break or make the marriage?
I haven’t read anything by this author before but will definitely look out for more in the future. The intriguing drama of murder and lies kept me guessing a lot of the time. My only criticism was that the “incident” in Venice was never explained. Definitely recommend this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House
First time reading a book by this author, it did not disappoint, but did seem to waffle in a few places.
You had to feel sorry for Tasha as she seemed to be the one holding it all together. Mistaken identity or not that is the big question here. Bought in a new topic for discussion on DNA and it is not all it seems apparently.
Will follow this author.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this book.
Sisters Alice and Tasha, have very different lives. Older sister Alice is a high-flyer, married to a wealthy entrepreneur, Kyle. Tasha has been with Aaron since they were teenagers and they live in the same village where they grew up. When Alice realises Tasha is struggling with her twin toddlers, she suggests they do a life swap for a week.
Alice and Kyle move into Tasha and Aaron’s cottage and babysit their children, while they stay in Alice and Kyle’s Venice holiday apartment and try to inject some romance back into their marriage. But within days Tasha receives a phone call to say that someone has broken into their cottage and attacked Alice and Kyle.
Everyone assumes it’s a burglary gone wrong. Until Tasha receives a note through her letterbox saying It was supposed to be you.
Every family has their secrets but how far would you go to protect a loved one
The Queen of twists and turns has done it again, leading you up the garden path teasing with so many directions and to say I was totally wrong with this one but had an inkling two chapters from the end
I really can’t wait to see what else Claire comes up with
Highly recommended
Sisters Tasha and Alice are very close. Tasha, a BOGOF expert and savvy shopper working at a dentist practice in the local village, is married to Aaron, a pub loving car mechanic. Sister Alice is just the opposite. A scientist, sophisticated, clever and well to do, she is married to Kyle, a techy with a private income, who inherited wealth from his deceased parents. Tasha and Aaron haven’t had a holiday in some time, so when Alice offers the use of their Venice apartment Aaron jumps at the chance, though Tasha is reluctant to leave their 3 year old girls. With the decision made, Alice and Kyle to move in to look after the twins, and the other couple to jet off to Venice to rekindle the passion in their marriage (less pub time would have worked too and been cheaper 🤣). The events that follow make this decision one they will all regret.
This is a hard one for me to review. Such a good plot with a nice twist, but too many inconsistencies. Just a few examples. For a couple struggling financially, the drinking/pub/ Zoe scenario seemed a bit strange for a man who professed to love his family so much? And the Venice scare - was this a case of mistaken identity or just a coincidence? Not explained in any detail, shame as the writing around the event was so good, really well done. Who was writing the notes in italics? Obviously I missed something there. Apologies if this was explained and I overlooked it.
Too many superfluous characters, though the main ones were definitely love/hate, a sign of good writing.
This book started so well and I thought Douglas had pulled off another good read, but too much filler and thumb sucking for me!
A quick read, though somewhat fuzzy. Ok, but not this author’s best for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Michael Joseph Random House.
When Natasha’s sister and her husband are attacked leaving one of them dead she receives an anonymous note that implies that she was the intended victim.
Tasha becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened and is left questioning if it could be related to the disappearance of a third sister, who vanished decades ago.
This is a very fast paced thriller told in multiple POVs and it definitely keeps you guessing until the very end.
I enjoyed it but it did get a bit chaotic with mad twists and turns at the end which I felt weren’t really necessary. A good, quick read that is perfect to get you out of a reading slump.
Gripping, twisty, draws you in from the start....what more could you want in a thriller? Thanks @netgalley for the ARC
What a great book to get me out of my reading slump!
Tasha and her husband Aaron have gone to stay in her sisters apartment in Venice for an anniversary trip. Her sister, Alice stays at their home with her husband Kyle to babysit Tasha and Aaron's twin girls.
Shortly into the trip, Aaron takes a call from home, Alice has been attacked and Kyle has been murdered.
They head home to the chaotic scenes, with no idea why this has happened. Alice has survived, the twins were unharmed, so who has sent a note to Tasha saying it should have been her?
With plenty of twists and red herrings, this is a real easy to read page turner, told from different perspectives. There's another story in the background which is pretty major and, as mentioned in previous reviews, a bizarre Venice plot line that's not really explained.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.
Claire Douglas just gets better and better!
Tasha and Alice are sisters with a close bond, partly due to being a duo of sisters rather than a trio. Now Tasha is a mother of young twins, she needs a break and Alice is quick to offer a life swap idea - Tasha and her husband Aaron can travel to Alice’s apartment in Venice whilst Alice and her husband Kyle look after the twins. It all sounds incredible until things start to wrong in both locations…..
A twisty and exciting read with a number of red herrings theory in to keep you guessing! I have really enjoyed all the books from Claire that I’ve read so far and this is probably her best yet.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
