I always have high expectations for any Kalynn Bayron book and I am so excited for this one having read the sampler. The premise is really intriguing - we are introduced to a world like and yet unlike slpeeing beauty - with a bold, courageous and impulsive protagonist and a set up for revenge against a mysterious and dangerous adversary. This author writes such brilliantly complex characters and I can't wait to see how the story unfolds.
Great retelling. Fun vibes and really easy to read.
the writing style and narrative voice is welcoming and the story moves at a great pace.
Recommend for if you are in a slump and need something to pull you out of it
Very good sampler. I am very excited to read the full novel. Just waiting for my fairyloot edition to arrive :)
I didn't realise this was just a sampler and I don't like reading little bits of story and then having to wait to read the rest so I am going to wait and buy the full book. Still highly anticipating it.
Since this was only the first few chapters I don't have much to say! it was immediately enthralling and fast paced, and I can see that it set up for a good story. I will definitely consider reading the whole book in the future!
A retelling of Snow White, instead of the Wicked Queen we have the Knight. The Knight is an ancient monster who has the power to grant wishes, although these wishes are usually turned into curses. Born with the ability to communicate with animals, and conjure weapons from nature Eve has been training her whole life to defeat this monster.
As more of the locals try and make deals with the Knight, and are harmed in the process Eve believes that she is ready to face him, but when her mother, Queen Regina starts behaving oddly - talking to no-one, lashing out at the slightest thing, Eve starts questioning whether her powers and her control of them will be enough to save her family and the kingdom.
The five chapters that were in the sampler were well done, and I was just getting into the story when it ended, I must now wait patiently for the whole book to be available.
Sleep Like Death hooked me from the beginning, introducing the main character Eve and the world around her. I have added this to my list to get once it's released so I csn see how it developed further.
What a fantastic opening to a book! I love the world building and hints at different fairytales.
I am already hooked and invested in these characters. I need the rest of this book now!! Definitely heading off to preorder it straight away!
Thank you for the opportunity to experience the first three chapters of this book.
I am hooked. I will be preordering this book immediately. It’s been ages since I was that immersed in a story, particularly in the first few chapters.
This will be a best seller for sure.
I need the rest of this yesterday!! Why is it still a over a month away until publication?!
I love Kalynn Bayron and I love fairytale retellings. I will be getting this on publication day (somehow - it will be tricky since it's on my birthday)
As a fan of Kalynn Bayron I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to read the first three chapters of her upcoming book through NetGalley. Sleep Like Death hooks you from the beginning, introducing you to Eve, the magic wielding protagonist, and the fantastical world in which she lives. I can’t wait to finish reading this book when it comes out!
This is the first time I've read anything by Kalynn Bayron. After reading the samples I am very intruiged and cannot wait to meet the knight! I will be devouring this upon release!
This sampler was amazing! I can't wait for the rest of the book! I know that I will be devouring it!
Thankyou to NetGalley for this sampler. Looking forward to follow Eve in her pursuit of the knight. Her connection with the natural world and magical abilities seem to suggest her journey will be eventful to say the least. A book I will be adding to my collection when it is released.
This is a review of the first three chapters of this novel which I received as a sampler from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My views of the book may change once I’ve read the complete story.
This is my first time reading a Kalynn Bayron novel and she made a good first impression. Although I found the first chapter a bit dry and, in some places, even confusing, I was drawn into the story and will be reading the full novel when it comes out in June. I do love a good fairy tale retelling and I particularly enjoyed the diversity of characters with Eve having queer parents.
The novel follows Eve, a fiesty if somewhat cocky Princess with one aim in life: to kill the Knight, a mysterious magician seemingly who bestows wishes upon people but only in the most literal sense. When Eve’s mother asked for the most beautiful singing voice in the land, the Knight took her wish too literally, transforming her into a bird and devastating Eve’s family. For this Eve wants to kill the Knight and put an end to his cruelty.
The first three chapters were well-written and fast-paced. The main character was well-established and I instantly connected with her and her motivations. I look forward to reading the whole book so that I can follow her character development.
Although I found the first chapter a little dry and initially confusing, Kalynn Bayron did a good job of world-building and establishing the novel's magic system. The Knight was set up as the main antagonist of the novel and I'm interested to read more and see how Eve and the Knight's paths cross.
Overall, this was a strong start to what I hope will be a very enjoyable read. I've awarded three stars as I didn't feel like I read enough to grant a higher rating but I will certainly keep my eye out for this when it comes out on 25 June.
Thank you for gifting me this sampler.
I’m really enjoying this story so far, after reading 3 of Kalynn Bayron’s books, I know I really enjoy her fast paced writing! She is one of favourite author of queer characters and I thoroughly enjoy everything she writes.
I wish this sampler was the whole book! If I’d have realised, I would’ve left it later to start reading it because how am I supposed to wait for this to come out.
I was sent this by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, for a full review see my Amazon and Goodreads pages.
I'm a big fan of this authors other work so I was very excited to read a sample of this book, great start so far and I look forward to reading the rest
Sleep Like Death features our main protagnoist Eve who holds special powers and has been training all her life to defeat the Knight, the one who grants wishes but not as people expect...
I cannot leave an accurate rating on this as the ARC I received was only a sampler of the first three chapters however what I can say is that I did very much enjoy what I was able to read. Please just note that the following is only an opinion on the first three chapters and when I read the rest of the book (once released), the opinions below could change.
The characters within the book all seem to be well-written and interesting. There's a bit of backstory to each and it is interesting to see where they all play their part within Sleep Like Death. Eve has trained all her life to defeat the illusive Knight, one of her mother's was cursed and the other is bearing the brunt of that curse whilst ruling a kingdom. I would be interested to see how the story unfolds with each character further in.
I enjoy the villanious aspect being about wishes. It's interesting to see how one might think that their wish is harmless and then the Knight shows them just how twisted it could be if it's thought about in multiple senses. I very much enjoyed learning about what other wishes had been made and usually I could guess how they could go wrong but this didn't make the book seem predictable - it read like a fairy tale.
Finally, the writing style is very fast paced and that is one of the main things I enjoy about YA books. I'm not usually one to read them anymore as I feel as though I have grown out of them but I have very much enjoyed all the books I have read of Bayron and I knew this one wouldn't be any different. Already I feel I have had a good glimpse into the book and that's from three chapters so I can only imagine what is to come.
A recommendation for any who enjoy a re-telling of fairy tales.
This novel is a continuation of the trilogy from the first book. From what I can only presume is retelling of the fairy tale sleeping beauty. The book is very quick to jump into action from the first chapter and a fast-paced book. It's perfect for fantasy readers who prefer an action-packed book from the get-go (start). This novel is ideal for a young adult where they reminisce on their childhood memories if fairytale with a twist. The only thing I will say is there could have been a bit more character building.
For a sampler, I believe this is a solid read. I am excited about the initial setup. I don't know if this is premature to say, but already it is a tight beginning that affords no prisoners. It's a distinctive re-telling I suppose, with a firm, clear leading MC in terms of intonation. It is easy to latch onto their voice I feel and I have remained emersed in the story so far. I wish this was the entire book, so i could provide a through outlook on the book.
Eve, the MC and so the author, Katlynn Bayron, allows for a good setup for pretty solid world building, i feel. The author's writing style flows with a simple but engaging melody, which I think helped me keep reading on.
Overall, I... we need and just want a bit more! Please and thank you.
Thank you Net Galley and Bloomsbury Publishing PLC for this arc
