absolutely loved this. Its very accessible. I would comfortable giving it to a child or an adult who wanted to just flip through for an overview. I think it's a good entry point into Queer history. I liked the discussion questions at the end. I think the discussion question make it great fit in a classroom or for parents trying to teach their children at home. The art is lovely, and I liked the diverse faces.

What a sweet, fun and inclusive little book. I am always blown away when I get the chance to read queer and inclusive children’s books because they really didn’t exist when I was a kid.

A beautiful and welcoming picture book that identities and explains various symbols and their role in queer history. The structure means you can read, discuss, and come back to the text again - really well done! I can't find a suggested age range for this book, but discrimination is discussed throughout so it may be best for younger readers to read with a parent or teacher who can provide context and answer questions. Back matter includes questions to prompt further discussion. Thank you so much for the chance to read early. Will definitely be purchasing a copy.

As a queer parent, I love reading kid books about being queer. This particular one goes into simple, kid-friendly detail about various queer symbols throughout time, what they mean, and how/why they came to be. I consider myself more thoroughly educated after reading this, because I didn't know about the lavender rhino or the purple handprints! I am actually going to plan to purchase a hard copy of this once it's released because I think it's a valuable piece of queer education in a well-simplified and fun to look at format. I look forward to sharing it with my daughter! Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to preview an advanced digital copy of this book!

This is a short intro to some.common symbols in queer history. The explanations are clear and the illustrations are lovely.
I received a copy of this title from NetGalley.

This delightful book is both informative and entertaining. I loved learning about the different lgbtqia symbols and where they come from. The illustrations are adorable and the discussion questions at the end are very thoughtful and helpful.

Due to the short length and simple descriptions, I would say this is most appropriate for younger children (4-7 maybe?) but it does also assume that the reader has some knowledge about the pride movement (for example, there are some terms that are not defined, including homosexuality and lgbtqia2s+). In any case, it's a great way to open up a discussion with your child about lgbtqia rights, as well as activism and the use of symbols to convey longer messages in general. Well done!

A short but sweet book that introduced me (a queer woman) to some symbols I'd not seen before!

A quick note that there's no explanation of the terms used, and this also isn't an intro to queer identities, just something to bear in mind

I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley, on the expectation that I would provide an honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing the Advanced Reader Copy.

This is a lovely little book to learn about queer symbols throughout history. I had no idea there were so many different ways that LGBTQIA2s+ people had communicated with each other during times when it was not safe to be openly queer. The illustrations are lovely and add visual interest to the content. Each symbol is described along with a short story of the time, which serves to illustrate the challenge of finding community as a marginalized population.

Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I learned a lot from it and I look forward to being able to share that information with my daughter, nieces and nephews!

These are the kind of books that need to be included in school libraries. The explanation of the symbols we see and events that are held for the LGBTQIA+ is not only needed but should be required. I felt like the book was clear to understand and am taking away knowledge that I might not ever have known. Rainbows, Unicorns, and Triangles is important because it acknowledges several origins of the symbols of the LGBTQIA+ community and explains what their meanings are.

Glorified PowerPoint

Cover/title/illustrations 5 stars
Content 2 stars

What I had hoped from this book was that it would read more like a children’s book, a story, a progression, some rhyming or word play.

What I got instead what a glorified PowerPoint or glossary of terms. A word with a brief description, a symbol/color turned into a flower for the border of a PowerPoint slide, followed by a slide with a picture of the actual symbol.

I did love the artwork but if the goal is to gear it toward the youth or incorporate it into the schools with bright colors and images at least put it into a story format.

I was won over immediately by the lovely cover and premise of the book. I knew very little about the information contained in the book and some of it was fascianting. I am sure that for a younger audience, this could prove to be interesting and a good starting point for more informed and detailed information. The tone felt slightly flat and I would've liked a change in tone but I think this will enjoyed by many young people.

This breaks down symbols used by queen people in history in a very approachable way for people of all ages. I have been in the queer community for a long time and some of these were new to me.

I love all these books that are coming out about LGBTQIA+ published for all ages. This book was very informative, and I loved the illustrations that went along with it. It makes it very easy to digest this information, and I will keep reading all these children's books that come out.

This was nice for what it was. The art is simple and nice, showing off scenarios in which the symbols just mentioned might appear irl. There were a few interesting things in here, although I knew about most of the symbols already. I wish there were a bit more to this, I feel like we could've dug just a liiiittle bit deeper. Or showed off some more obscure/unknown things. Anyways it was fine

This book is an excellent resource to parents and educators to introduce LGBT+ topics to children. As a adult, I actually learned about several different symbols that has been used to identify the community. Loved that illustration accompanied the text so that reader can visualize what he or she just read.

Thank you once again Netgalley’s Read Now!! I barely read any picture books, but it always makes me so so happy to see that there are so many gorgeous ones around with a focus on inclusivity.
This book has a gorgeous art style and bite sized pieces of information that is really quite interesting!! It also expands on queer knowledge that you may already know; for example, I knew that the poet Sappho is where the term sapphic comes from, but I didn’t realise that she implemented (or even that it was a thing to do!) putting violets in a bouquet to send to a female friend that you saw as more than a friend.
When it releases, I’m going to see if I can manage to get it onto the library shelves!! I’ve done it before, and this is most certainly a worthwhile cause 🥰

Rainbows, Unicorns and Triangles by Jessica Kingsley Publishers is an excellent glimpse into the history of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our history is vast and filled with struggle and hardship but learning about all the ways we have overcome and found ways to connect with one another was enlightening and inspirational. Here is to all those who have come before us and fought the good fight. Excellent book with beautiful illustrations. Thank you for sharing!
