I really enjoyed this book and I liked the podcast format. It was fast-paced. The characters were realistic- although I found Lucy a bit frustrating at times. The plot held my interest and the mystery was gripping. Good book overall.
Listen for the Lie follows the story of Lucy, who is found covered in her best friend Savvy's blood, with no memory of what happened., did she actually kill her best friend?!?!
Five years later a true crime podcaster Ben, decides to investigate Savvy's murder with the hope of finding the truth of what happened that night.
A brilliantly entertaining read, I anticipate that this will be a hit when it’s available on the shelves in 2024!!!
I loved this book.
It was so fun to experience the life of someone who pretends to be others.
Something a bit different to the usual crowded market of books!
Smart, witty, funny and unpredictable. A great book!
If you are looking for something to make you chuckle but that has some depth and intrigue then this is your next book.
This is a hybrid novel - lots of first person as well as accompanying "mixed media" in the form of podcast transcripts.
I really like dthis - a good story about Lucy Chace, who was accused of murdering her best friend and after years away from her home town, goes back for her grandmothers birthday party. At the same time, a podcaster is investigating the murder promising to find out the truth about "who killed Savvy"
It's a really well written crime/mystery, where Lucy Chase is struggling with the guilt of what happened to her best friend, having no memory of the fatal night where she was found covered in the murdered woman's blood and being stalked on social media being accused of being a murderer. Everyone in her home town thinks she did it and got away with it - oh, and just to cap it all, Lucy keeps hearing voices telling her to kill people
So, the smarmy smooth podcaster is desperate for an interview with Lucy, and it all goes on from there. Lucy does make some really bad judgement calls and.....read it to find out - no plot spolers here!
My verdict - Highly recommended - really good writing, a mix of thriller/mystery and some sharp/dark humour. This is good to read, whether you like "normal" novels or those with an element of "mixed media" - works perfetctly well, whatever your preference.
I am so excited for this book to come out so I can make everyone I know buy it!! Love the premise, the podcast lense was a really good touch. I didn't see the ending coming at all.
Lucy Chase and her best friend Savannah (known to everyone as "Savvy") are beloved in their small Texas town. Both are beautiful and smart, but Lucy has returned from college married to a man with generational wealth, while Savvy is known as a very social butterfly with boyfriends all over town. One evening, Lucy is found walking down the road covered in Savvy's blood with no memory of what happened. Five years later, Lucy has moved to California and a meddlesome podcaster is reopening the case on what happened that terrible night, and all the wounds associated with it.
I have been a fan of Amy Tintera's young adult fiction for a long time so I was very excited to learn she was writing a novel for adult audiences. I am not, however, a huge fan of mysteries, but for Tintera I was willing to give it a go and I was not disappointed.
I loved Listen for the Lie from start to finish. Lucy's matter-of-fact acceptance that everyone, including her parents, believes she murdered Savvy was refreshing and heartbreaking. I often found myself amazed at her ability to walk with her head held high in the face of the glares and the not-so-whispered suspicions. It's hard to sympathize with a suspected murderer, and yet I couldn't help but cheer for Lucy. She has learned to cope by being sarcastic, blunt and refusing to ignore the elephant in the room — that she may have murdered her best friend.
Ben Owens is likable as the podcaster trying to uncover the truth. Lucy's grandmother, Beverly, is a delight and a wonderful counterpoint to her painful parents. Lucy and Savvy's friends, their former neighbors, Lucy's ex-husband are all interview subjects as Ben tries to fit the pieces of the puzzle together to unlock Lucy's memories and find out what happened to Savvy.
I definitely had my suspicions about who murdered Savvy along the way, and there are plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing if you don't spend too much time thinking about it.
While this was completely different than any other book I've ready by Amy Tintera I enjoyed it thoroughly and I can't wait until her next one.
Thanks to NetGalley for this advance copy!
First 5 star of the year - what a fun and fast paced thriller! Instantly drew me in with the use of a podcast and loved the small town vibes. We meet a variety of characters and they all have a distinct feel about them - shout out to Grandma Beverly in particular!
Couple of twists and turns making you second guess throughout who is responsible for Savvy’s death. Would wholeheartedly recommend you pick this one up, especially if you enjoy dark fun humour like the Finlay Donovan series.
Hope this author does more adult thrillers!
Thank you to netgalley for providing an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Such a fun book! Lucy is found in the streets with her friend’s blood on her clothes - she can’t remember anything… did she kill her friend? This book was addictive! I had to carry on reading. It’s written in the normal style and some podcast which took me a minute to get used too but I throughly enjoyed it! I haven’t come across this author before but I will defiantly be looking for others! Thank you NetGalley, the Publisher and Author for the advanced copy for my non biased review.
Lucy is found wandering the streets with blood all over her clothes. As it turns out, her best friend, Savvy, has been murdered. And so it begins, the theory that it was Lucy that murdered her. With no murder weapon and no witnesses, Lucy couldn't be charged, but she had already been convicted in the court of public opinion in their small Texas town, so she started a new life in LA. That is until a podcaster, Ben Owens, started dredging it all up again years later. Around the same time, her grandmother begs Lucy to return to her hometown for her birthday party and the fun begins. A true crime podcast, a host of suspicious characters and Lucy, the main star, who still can't remember what happened that night herself.
Lucy is such a hilarious character and I thoroughly enjoyed her in this witty and entertaining crime fiction. The writing captured my full attention, which was interspersed with Savvy's voice in Lucy's head saying things like 'Let's Kill' or telling her ways to plot killing someone. It was so much fun!! This has been one of my favourite books in a while and I am so thankful I was able to read this one early. 4.5*
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Random House UK for this wickedly entertaining novel.
Hugely entertaining..
Did Lucy Chase really murder her best friend? The trouble is - Lucy cannot remember herself. Her memory of the incident, in which her friend was killed, has disappeared. When a true crime podcaster begins to dredge up the case in pursuit of the truth, Lucy’s life is once again upturned. A cast of deftly drawn characters populate a swiftly moving plot heavily laced with dark humour and acidic asides. Hugely entertaining. Edgy, slick, engaging and immensely readable in one delicious sitting.
This was very different.
I struggled to get to grips with a story primarily presented in large swathes of dialogue but the premise and execution were sound.
I had a really good time reading this.
Listen for the Lie was both a good thriller and fun, and it is definitely one of the best books from the genre that I’ve read in a while.
Absolute devoured this! Amy Tintera is brilliant and her work is to watch out for. Her writing style mixes thriller, wit and humour. This is a gripping thriller and makes you feel for the leads and want to know the truth behind the murder.
The book is about an old murder case close to home that reopens when a podcast starts looking into what actually happened. I loved the context of the podcast and the way it brought out the story in the form of episodes with narrative interpersed. The characters and story is very well written. Especially the dialogues of the lead. The wit adds to the story and makes it different from the usual thrillers. Want to read more by Amy for sure and recommend this one to all thriller lovers!
Thank you Random House UK, Transworld Publishers and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange of my unbiased review.
4.5 rounded up
Is Lucy Chase a murderer?? Podcaster Ben Owens, a bit smug and maybe too good looking for his own good, has made this case his focus for the second season of “Listen for the Lie”. Is it true?? Did Lucy murder her best friend Savannah (Savvy) Harper five years ago? Savvy’s family believes she did as she was discovered covered in Savvy’s blood but claims to have no memory of the night in question. Lucy is never charged. Now she is forced to return home to Plumpton, Texas, a place she has vowed to never set foot in again with the hope of finding the truth, even if that means she is guilty as everyone believes.
YES!! I love this novel so it’s a winner, winner for me!! From beginning to end the pace never lets up, the foot is firmly on the accelerator throughout and it has me in a vice like grip fully invested in sniffing out the truth. I grow to increasingly like Lucy, she’s darkly funny and feisty and I love her thoughts that fly in all sorts of directions, few of them nice but many barbs that settle are fully justified. The star of the show has to be Lucy’s absolutely brilliant grandma Beverley, who is hilarious and I want to grow old utterly disgracefully with her. In reality, she is probably the only one who has Lucy’s back and whose belief in her never wavers. Ben grows on me too and his intriguing podcast allows you to witness the atmosphere in Plumpton which reveals a multitude of tangled and nefarious webs, some deeply unpleasant characters, a truckload of lies and numerous assumptions. There’s a lot going on beneath the prim surface of Plumpton and in reality it’s a very grubby place. Ben sure chucks in a stone or two and watches as the ripples get bigger and bigger. All this means is that you further you read on the more desperate you become to KNOW.
This novel has everything I look for in a mystery/ thriller - an enthralling and well constructed plot, humour, irony and sarcasm, pace, twisty twists, tension and suspense, some jaw droppers, some creepiness and a character to root for. What a cracking read. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Random House U.K., Cornerstone for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
This was a brilliant read! Loved the story being led and framed by a true crime podcast and thought Lucy was a great character. Flawed but believable. As well as being a great true crime story, the spin on the 'who done it' with the main suspect as a part of the mystery was really clever. And additionally, the book coveted some difficult subjects, like domestic violence and alcohol abuse sensitively. I think this would translate really well on film.
An absolutely brilliant book. I echo others’ sentiments, and I too can’t wait for people to read this book.
It’s a the perfect mix of comedy and drama - Amy Tintera is definitely one to watch for in the future.
I often find myself being dragged along through the first half of every thriller, but as soon as I started reading, my eyes were GLUED to the page (kindle.) I could not put it down. An amazing mystery and comedy all in one. I cannot wait for everyone to read this when it’s released!!!
I finished this yesterday and I've already recommended it to 2 friends. Great twisty plot. Lucy's loss of memory and intrusive thoughts are handled well, as is the presence of Savannah - she may be dead but we still get to know her personality and the bond she and Lucy shared. Really enjoyed and agree that fans of How to Kill Your Family would like this one.
What a great read with many modern aspects that really add to the story! Overall I really enjoyed it.
