Victoria Goddard breathes new life into the vastly overcrowded detective fiction genre. The novel is cleverly structured and written with pitch perfect precision.
The characters really do leap off the page and one of the author's particular skills is in making one have empathy even when a character has been perceived as a potential violent killer.
The plot is engaging, intriguing and innovative, and full of surprise twists and turns as the tension builds for a harrowing crescendo. The author even manages to avoid the use of red herrings as a device to distract her readers.
London in 1998 is painted with evocative attention to detail and the investigation into the death of an unfaithful wife is extraordinarily compelling.
This is an outstanding debut by an author whom I feel sure has many more great stories to tell and I for one look forward to reading them.
An intricate plot is well supported by a cast of characters who you will want to know. There are so many possibilities that you will find yourself racing through to find out what happened - it’s definitely not obvious! I liked learning more about military life and the book is thought provoking in that it makes you ponder how people adjust when they return to civilian life.
