I think this book does a great job of telling the Easter story in a concise, but appropriately thorough way. Although marketed towards children ages 6+, I personally think it might be better suited to children ages 7 or 8+. Obviously this is a minor difference, but I think this particular retelling - the language and format used - may be slightly too difficult for children aged 6 to comprehend in a meaningful way. Nevertheless, if read with a grown-up, I could probably see this working with this age too.
The illustrations, text layout, and colour scheme encourage an interactive reading experience. The retelling is faithful to the essence of the Easter story. I also think the pages at the end of the book (where the appropriate bible chapters and verses are referenced) makes this book an excellent transitional resource to help children move over to reading the Bible without feeling too overwhelmed by the task.
I received a free copy of this eBook from the publisher, SPCK Children's (Lion Children's Books), for review purposes.
This book tells the story of Holy Week, and is excellent for older children who are ready to learn more about the events leading up the crucifixion and resurrection and then events to Pentecost. The book has longer text telling each story than illustrations, but I think that works well with the purpose and audience of the book.
Thank you NetGalley and SPCK Children’s for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I loved this brilliant telling of the Last Supper, Resurrection and Pentecost for little minds. The story was refreshing to read from the perspective of a child ,I loved how easy it was to read and understand . This book should be on every child's shelf and such a great read to discuss together.
Love to see that there are more of these books carrying traditional Bible stories geared towards children. The story of the Passion of Christ starting with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem leading to the hopeful and joyful story of Easter is a greatly consolidated in this book.
Chapters are short enough to hold young minds' attention and each chapter is accompanied by brightly colored and well-done illustrations.
This would be another great addition to any Christian family's library, and it's a great book that explains the last few days of Jesus's life here om earth.
I received an ARC copy of this book via Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a great book explaining the story of Easter. This is especially great for older children as it is a bit longer and goes into more detail about the betrayal of Judas and the resurrection. I do wish there were more illustrations. I read this to my daughter during tummy time. While she is still too young to fully appreciate the book, I will definitely be rereading it to her when she gets older. I feel this is a great way to teach the story of Easter to our youth groups both young and mid-teens. It’s not super childish but it’s also not too old. Overall I did enjoy it and will be buying it for my daughter and for her youth group when the time comes.
Thank you, SPCK Children’s, for the advance reading copy.
I feel this book is a good one to read along with the kids. I find the writing quite engaging and the illustrations are quite fun.
I feel the author and the artist have done an amazing work with the Bible Story series.
This is very much a faithful translation of the Easter story for children. It is true to the Word and includes all of the smaller parts of the last days of Jesus as well as the actions of the disciples. It ensures that children see the whole story of Easter and not just a focus on the last supper but very much the events covered on Palm Sunday, the road to Emmaus, Pentecost and the ensuing mass baptisms. A good view to take to give children who are starting to read alone that full picture of the miracle and sacrifice of Jesus.
