This poignant novel draws readers into the depth of the human experience and is a roller-coaster of emotions - some writers have that innate ability to weave stories that just resonate with the human soul long after you finish the last page.
Pressor (the modern day alter ego of Darcy) contemplates life. The characters are rich and well developed. The writing is such that the reader simply falls into the story and experiences it so closely the feels are all there. Themes of love, loss, the sweetness of second chances, redemption, and the connections of family and friends are explored expertly.
This is one of those books that I know I will find myself re-reading, multiple times. Timeless, poignant, emotionally charged, beautifully written.
Thank you for NetGalley and the author for this review copy in exchange for my review.
On Mr. Darcy's Sofa is a bit of a jumble. The connections to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice are somewhat thin, and Presser, the character who is supposed to resemble Darcy in Austen's book seems more of himself than Mr. Darcy. Presser's story, which involves his son Noah, a custody battle, love, loss, and all the concomitant emotions that follow this story, is fairly strong. He and the first person writer of the story, Penelope, struggle with their relationship throughout the book.
The character that is the strongest is the fictional one of Evan, who has a most interesting ear-flap hat that he loses at one point. His search for the hat and a bucolic walk in the woods is lovingly and carefully described. Bears play a part in this search, and Evan is a charming character, indeed.
There are many pointed characters in the book which show the authors knowledge, and sometimes it is quite erudite but not always supportive of the narrative. Characters from Greek myth, famous statues, Christianity, Japanese culture, history, well-known paintings, etc. are emphasized..
On the other hand, the writer's (Penelope's) father and his relationship with a woman much younger than he is, Julie, is threaded throughout the book. This pairing is much stronger than some of the other couplings in the book.
The rather uneven phrasing is also occasionally off-putting, and again, following the narrative and plot can be a challenge.
Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book.
A heartfelt and emotionally charged women's fiction novel that explores themes of love, loss, and forgiveness. The story follows Presser, a 21st-century version of Mr. Darcy, as he navigates the challenges of life, including the complexities of marriage, custody battles, and personal growth. The book's well-developed characters and clever humor provide a perfect balance to the emotionally resonant storyline. With references to Jane Austen and Mr. Darcy, this novel is a captivating modern interpretation that fans of Austen will surely appreciate.
