Lily has built up her business ‘Lily Loves’ into a very successful operation selling handmade crafts on the Internet. After an embarrassing incident when as a judge on a craft competition on television, she made an unfortunate comment off microphone which was taken out of context and embellished she was trolled and portrayed as a terrible person and a ferocious business woman.
After collapsing at work her PA books her a retreat on the Isles of Scilly to make her rest and take tome away from the business..
I really enjoyed this book. It showed the good and bad parts of social media, the harm it can do on a personal basis and the good it can do for small businesses.
As Lily tries to get her work and home life balanced, may she then have room for romance?
The island of Stark and the rest of the Scilly Isles are beautifully portrayed, a wonderful advert for the area. Having visited them previously, I can highly recommend a holiday there.
Take me to the Isle of Scilly. What a lighthearted kick back on the beach kind of read. Lily the workaholic is put on leave by her PA and this is where the story begins. Time to heal, time to feel and time to get immersed in the world of Scilly.
I enjoyed this one.
A fabulous story set in the most perfect sounding remote location. When Lily has a 'funny' turn at work, she is advised to have a complete break from running her business and to take a holiday. Her PA books her a retreat which turns out to be on a remote island off Scilly with no WiFi,TV or any other means of contact with the outside world, perfect for someone in need of a complete social media holiday. As soon as Lily arrives she is desperate to leave but fate may have other ideas. Beautiful described area, likeable characters, an all round great read. Thank you Netgalley and publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my review.
Yet another wonderful book by Phillipa. With loveable characters and beautiful narratives making it a heart warming spring read.
Really enjoyed this book. Lily and Sam were great characters who's lives you could lose yourself in!
Great to read on the beach or around the pool. Thanks again Phillipa.
I enjoyed this book, the descriptions of the scenery and setting were beautiful and made me desperate to visit the scilly isles. I liked the way the relationships and characters developed as the story went on and the ending was satisfying. Thank you!
Lily needs to take a break from her business, and when her PA books her a retreat on the Scilly Isles, she cannot wait to get back to London and her work. When something happens that means she has to stay longer, can she make the most of slowing down, and getting to know herself, and local man Sam, a bit better?
Beautiful setting, it is a well written easy to read story. I loved Sam and his complicated family, and Etienne was just delightful. Fabulous summer read from one of my must read authors.
Workaholic Lily goes to the Scilly isles to unwind, and meets the dour Sam, newly set up in his Retreat business and seemingly not bothered about connecting with his client . Philippa Ashley at her best, providing romance and a travelogue of the Scillies. Loved it .
Second Chance Summer is the delightful new novel from Phillipa Ashley. Most of the books I’ve read by this author have been set in Cornwall but here we are transported to the beautiful Isles of Scilly, an island group off the south west tip of Cornwall. Phillipa Ashley’s descriptions of the islands made them sound so stunning and having looked them up, I can see they really are. I’d really like to visit so the author is doing a good job for the Tourist Board!
It wasn’t a beautiful evening when workaholic Lily arrived on the islands though, on a very wet and windy night. She was reluctantly taking a break from her beloved business having been convinced by her assistant that she really needed to take time out or she might burn out. Stark wasn’t quite the luxury island retreat she had imagined. She was the only guest, it wasn’t quite finished and the owner Sam, might have been gorgeous but he was also rather grumpy! As they got to know each other, the attraction between them was undeniable but it was intriguing to pick up hints that there was a lot they weren’t telling each other about their pasts.
One aspect of this story I found particularly interesting was that Sam was helping care for his teenaged niece. I have a friend in almost exactly that situation and I feel that the author wrote about this very insightfully. I thought it was particularly true to life both with the way the niece was feeling and the adjustments that had to be made in Sam’s life. My heart went out to them both.
Another really interesting part of the story involved a misunderstanding which led to Lily’s obituary being printed in the media. As well as having a successful business, she was well known thanks to a reality tv show she had helped judge so there was strong media interest in her so-called demise. When Lily saw what was written about her, she didn’t like what she read. She had a chance to see herself through others eyes and it really made her take stock of her life and what was important to her.
There are many characters who get a second chance in this book and I enjoyed reading about them all. With its gorgeous setting and will-they-won’t-they romance, Second Chance Summer is perfect escapist reading for your summer reading list.
Lily runs a successful company, Lily Loves, however suffers from burn out. Her PA insists that she takes a holiday and arranges a break on the Scilly Isles in a new retreat, however when she arrives she finds that it is nowhere near finished. An incident happens that resets Lily's view of the retreat and she learns to appreciate the slower pace of life.
I loved this book, although I've never been to the Scilly Isles but they do sound wonderful and the retreat idyllic. Lily comes across as a nice person, despite negative publicity, and Sam, the owner of the retreat, as someone trying hard to set up the new business. With a troublesome niece, a ghostly apparition and the wonderful setting I became totally engrossed in the story, highly recommended.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
I really enjoy this book, right from the very first page. Lily Harper runs her own business - Lily Loves. We first meet Lily when she passes out in her office, suffering from burnout. She is still trying to get over the tragic death of her sister two years previously. So work was her escape from having to deal with her grief. Until she collapses. Her extremely capable PA books her a holiday get away to a new retreat in the Scilly Isles. There is just one problem. The resort is nowhere near finished. The resort is in the process of being renovated. The owner Sam is nursing his own heartbreak and uses the work is his refuge. Following an eventful journey, their meeting is any but cordial. Sam's niece is aware of Lily's internet notoriety following a stint as a judge on a crafting tv competition. Curtesy of.an unguarded comment when she failed to realise her mike was still live and some sneaky editing, Lily is branded a heartless bitch. Nothing could be further from the truth, but the internet trolls don't care. The story follows the time that Lily spends in the Scilly Isles. Can she win over the locals, can she finally unwind and start to relax? Can Sam overcome his sorrows. He is juggling the demands of building the retreat and caring for his niece as his brother has gone of to America and left her behind.
This story has a lovely cast of characters and a charming story line. I was sorry when the story came to an end. I would say that this is a great holiday read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
I really enjoyed this book, the characters were very well written and likable, the area the story is set in sounds amazing and I would love to visit myself and be "off grid", for such a small island there is a lot going on and there felt like there was just enough told of each story to keep it interesting and there was no "misunderstandings" that went on forever, if you want a nice read, this is the book for you.
Burnout sends Lily to a hastily booked retreat on the Scilly Isles and a near-miss with the sea makes her re-evaluate everything.
I really enjoy Phillipa Ashley's books; I enjoy her writing style and the pace with which the stories develop...this is no exception! It's a nice escape of a book but still feels realistic and well rounded. The characters are likeable and believable, the setting has made me want to travel there and I'm actually a bit sad I've finished it as I want to read more about the characters...which is always a good sign! It's a comforting read, not entirely predictable with bits that keep you on your toes!
If you've enjoyed Ashley's other books, you'll like this one too!
Second Chance Summer by Phillipa Ashley is a wonderful read set on the Isles of Scilly. Owner of 'Lily Loves', Lily Harper is badly in need of a break, and ends up at a brand new - and hardly ready to open - retreat run by Sam on one of the islands. Unimpressed, Lily is all set to leave when the unimaginable happens and she has a change of heart. Sam's aunt and niece were a wonderful part of this book, as were Lily's nieces but I loved it all and demolished the book in a couple of days. The perfect escapist read, great characters and location, and a relatable storyline. Fans of Phillipa Ashley won't be disappointed!
With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A lovely feel good read. Lily Harper is a successful business woman who is working far too hard. Her P A arranges for her to take a break on a remote uninhabited island with little or no communication for a few days to recharge her batteries.
She is not impressed at first even though Sam the owner of her accommodation is quite dishy. It's just not what she wanted!
Things happen which directly affect Lily's whole viewpoint of life, her future, family and eventually she comes to a decision!
Thankyou netgalley for this Arc which I appreciate.
Loved reading this gentle romantic novel set on The Ilses of Scilly.
Lily collapses at work after a tough time in her life, backlash after some comments on a talent show, her sister dying and potential big change in her artisan craft business. Her PA thinks she is overworked and needs a break. He books Lily a 2 week retreat on the Isle of Stark which Sam is in the process of building.
I loved the description of the island and the surrounding scenery. The characters really came to life and I felt I got to know them.
Lily is the archetypal workaholic, and grieving as well. Sam has been badly hurt and is trying to start a retreat on an island. They meet when lily is persuaded to have a holiday and that’s when the story really starts. Can they help each other or will they stay confined behind their own brick walls, afraid to live their lives?
Loved the characters and the setting - giving one respite from the normal day to day humdrum life.
Cute and romantic.
The perfect holiday read!
It sounds perfect, a retreat in the Scilley Islands, but when Lily arrives in bad weather to an unfinished retreat she is not impressed.
I loved how Lily was won over by Sam and the beautiful, scenic archipelago.
Lily is an overworked CEO of a company and has some difficult decisions to make. Sam is working hard to set up a retreat on an uninhabited island, part of the Isles of Scilly. Lily gives in to her PA's suggestion that she needs a holiday and so Lily finds herself at Sam's retreat. The scene is set. From the start the reader probably has a fair idea of how the story will end, but Phillipa Ashley leads the reader through a series of events which are well told and leave you wanting to know what happens next and wondering how everything can be resolved. A good summer read.
Second Chance Summer is a must read this summer, Lilly and Sam’s blossoming romance set in beautiful Scilly had me reading the book in just over a day. Loved it
