This book made me laugh out loud. Shamelessly, laugh and giggle on a bus packed full of strangers. I really don’t care, I just got so caught up in the story that the emotions just had to come out.
Delphie Bookham is a funny girl, but she’s also lonely. Her only friend is her non-verbal neighbour Mr Yoon. She has no close friends and lives a quiet life, until she dies after choking on a microwave burger. Hint, don’t eat crappy microwave burgers or you will be unalived.
Delphie goes to heaven or Evermore and meets Merritt who shows her the film of her sad life. Whilst she’s waiting to see what happens next, her soulmate arrives in Evermore, but he’s there by mistake and he gets sent back. Merritt agrees to let Delphie go back and she can stay alive if she finds her soulmate and gets him to kiss her within ten days.
Armed with just the name Jonah T, Delphie tries to find her soulmate. Along the way to finding her soulmate, Delphie makes friends with the people who help her. It’s a bit like Little Beaver and the Echo, how Delphie suddenly has all of these new friends and she’s not alone anymore.
Most importantly she becomes friends with her neighbour Cooper. Ahhhhhh, big sigh.
It’s a funny, quirky read. I wanted there to be a reasonable explanation for the death experience because I like plots to make sense, unless they are fantasy or paranormal books. The ending is nothing like I expected.
I think this has a chance of being my favourite book of 2024.
Started off thinking that I wasn’t going to enjoy it but boy, was I wrong. The main characters are amazing and I really loved how the storyline developed. I’d give it 6 stars if I could
Wow, what a gorgeous book. I loved everything about it and the plot will stick with me for a while.
It’s unique, quirky and also thought provoking. I was quickly drawn into the characters, and each one stood out.
It is definitely one of my favourites this year and more than worthy of 5 stars.
On the surface this is a story about finding your soulmate (after you meet him briefly in the afterlife) but really it is about connecting with those around you and living life to the fullest. Funny, and heart warming without being twee. Some great characters and some poignant moments showing how we can find ourselves alone when surrounded by people. A lovely read.
After an incident involving a microwave burger, recluse Delphie finds herself in the ‘afterlife’ waiting room. But when she’s given a second chance in life, with certain conditions, she needs to finds something worth living for.
This was a really sweet and funny story and if you enjoyed Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics, you’ll love this! Delphie keeps people at arms lengths because she’s been so disappointed by them and her awkwardness and being antisocial is often mistaken by rudeness. But this only adds to her likeness and one of the reasons you really start cheering for her.
I really enjoyed this, it was fun and endearing with a side of the supernatural and I loved how the story came together at the end!
I could barely put this book down, it's so good. Funny, sad, encouraging. This book has it all.
Merrit is an Afterlife coach with some scary ambitious traits. Delphie lands in her laundrette fresh from choking, unable to quite accept that this is her lot, she pleads to be sent back. She had 10 days to make it happen with a task that needs to be met. She signs the contract in the same way Ariel signs over her voice in The Little Mermaid.
She'd been a recluse, these 10 days show her what life could or maybe should have been.
From arrogant Cooper, Mr Yoon, Frida, Amy, Malcolm, Uncle Lester, her work colleagues at pharmacy to name but a few, she really has no choice but to engage and experience life. Will she make it in time, will her newly found zest for life and community spirit help her meet the requirements? It's such an awesome fun read on the way to finding out. Recommended as one of the funny and awesome romance comedies of 2024. It also gives off The Good Place Vibes in parts.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House UK and Cornerstone for providing this e-arc in exchange for an honest review - my first ARC read!
I loved this book!! What a clever idea - reading the summary, I was immediately hooked!
I’ll keep this review short, as I saw in another review and definitely agree, that the less you know about the plot, the better experience you’ll have reading!
However, this book has:
- Humour - I laughed out loud loads!
- Clever world building of the afterlife
- Loveable characters (Merritt specifically!)
- References to romance novels and films - loved that!
- An intriguing plot
- Soulmates
- Grumpy neighbour
- Relatable FMC
- An incredible, heartwarming plot twist (which I did unfortunately guess about half way, but, nevertheless, did not ruin it!)
A very addictive, fast-paced, romcom with guaranteed laughs and swooning! 🫶🏼
Oh, what an absolute dream of a read! I will do a full review nearer to publication and on my blog, but I just wanted to say how wonderful this read actually is.
For me, who did nothing but romance, women's fiction, and rom-com reading and then reviews, I became totally bored with the genre. So dull and repetitive. There is no life or spark. Very rarely, a book would even grab my attention.
I took this one because of the author. Her books have always made me laugh, and I have a huge respect for her for always keeping it real.
The Love of My After Life by Kirsty Greenwood has totally reminded me of why I read and loved that genre. It’s about time somebody came and spun it on its ass, and well, here comes Queen KG with a unique, funny, honest, and both heartbreaking and heartwarming book of life, love, death, and the afterlife! Oh, and you never look at a caramel slice the same way again!
5/5
I really loved this book. It was fun and funny.
Delphie dies, when she opens her eyes she meets Merritt, her guide to the afterlife if you will. Merritt is romance obsessed and believes in true love. Unusually another soul interrupt their session and Merritt informs Delphie that the person is her soulmate, well one of them anyway, and that she will send her back to earth if she can find him in 10 days, after that she dies again and this time its forever.
What follows is a very entertaining and surprising read about love, connection, family, 2nd chances and taking chances.
I loved it and would read it again. Would really love to see a book from Merritts perspective as that girl has a full book in her.
I loved this book about Delphie getting herself a life after she dies. Lovely characters although a little too slapstick in places for my taste.
An absolute TRIUMPH of a book! My first K. Greenwood book, but it won't be my last. It's absurd to find myself laughing at someone who's dying on the first page, but goodness, every word was perfection. I gobbled it up in one day even while I wanted it to last forever. Highly recommend. You won't be disappointed and like me, you'll root for Delphie to succeed every step of the way!
I loved this book! I was slightly worried when reading it that it would be a copycat of 'What's your number' as the start was definitely giving me those vibes but it had different twists and you genuienly fall in love with the characters. I genuinely cried whilst reading this book. The book is super wholesome and will leave you wanting to read whats next!
Delphie lives life as a lone wolf until one day she chokes on a piece of burger alone in her flat, when given a second chance at life, she makes the most of the time she has and finally discovers what love and friendship feel like.
Thank you for letting me read this wonderful book!
The Love of My Afterlife is a cute fluffy romance book novel by Kirsty Greenwood. It tells the tale of a woman named Delphi who has been given a second chance at romance in the most unusual way.
Delphi is quirky and lovable in the way that always makes you want to root for her.
There could have been a bit more romance weaved throughout the book but overall a lovely read.
Absolutely loved this book read it in 3 days ...its a lovely story of hope courage and eventually love !!!! 10 out 10
The premise of this book had me hooked from the second I read the blurb. I loved Merritt so so much, she gave me Michael from the food place vibes and I loved her love of romance. All the references to other romances, yes I loved all of it. My only complaint is there wasn’t enough spice! If spice isn’t for you, this book is right up your alley. I just wanted a spicier book with all those references to Jamie Fraser and other romance novels! But the love story here, I’m obsessed. There’s so many good layers involved, found family, grief, healing, growing. I love it all. Thank you for this book!
Thank you go Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advance copy.
I've read a few of Kirsty Greenwood's books in the past and always enjoyed them so I was very excited to get an early copy of this to read.
I really enjoyed the story, it had me laughing out loud at some points. I loved the premise of trying to chase down a lover you've only ever laid eyes on to in the Afterlife.
If you're looking for an easy romcom with a different spin this is for you. It's filled with humour and some favourite tropes:
Found family
Forced proximity
Grumpy x sunshine
Loner Delphie chokes to death and opens her eyes in Evermore. While she's still in shock about having lost her rather boring life, she meets a handsome man and there is an instant spark between them. Unfortunately, the man, Jonah, is being sent back to Earth because he was just visiting Evermore during a surgical procedure. Delphie is in double shock, first she's dead and there is nobody who will take care of her elderly neighbour, second she just met her soulmate who didn't get to stay. This can't do. She strikes a bargain with her afterlife coach who lets her get back to Earth for ten days. Within those ten days she must find Jonah and kiss him to be able to stay alive, otherwise she will die again and help her afterlife coach with their pet project.
A romantic comedy that sees Delphie go through lots of embarrassing moments which help her change her life and find new friends. But will she find her soulmate and arrange care for her neighbour Mr Yoon before the time runs out?
This novel plays with nearly all the romance tropes and doesn't even try to deny it. The outcome of the story was predictable early on, it was still fun seeing Delphie open up, realise some truths and find herself.
The Love of My Afterlife, by Kirsty Greenwood, absolutely blew me away. This book really is something special; it’s one of those books that makes you feel so many different things and that you’ll inevitably end up buying as a gift for as many people as you can when they’re birthday comes around. It’s such a celebration of what it means to be alive, to allow yourself to feel, to love, be loved and to find your person and your people. Gosh I loved it.
The Love of My Afterlife is a quirky read, I mean that should be clear from its title alone! We begin at the end, well the end of Delphie’s life, when she finds herself choking on a tragic burger in her worst PJs. But when she enters the afterlife she meets the most handsome man she’s ever met and he’s smiling at her. As they connect someone runs in explaining there’s been a big mistake and then he’s gone. In a twist of fate, Delphie is offered a deal in which she can return to her previous life and reconnect with the mysterious man she’s sure is her soulmate. The challenge? She only has ten days to find him. Ten days to make him fall for her. Oh, and he has no recollection of them ever having met…
Delphie was a brilliant lead. She has an extremely dry sense of humour which had me laughing out loud. I’ll admit she’s not necessarily likeable at the start; shes bristly and even pretty mean but all of this is part of a coping mechanism and as a consequence of a difficult, and very lonely adolescence. As Delphie literally watches her life flash before her she comes to realise she’s not really been living at all, but simply existing. Over the next ten days she truly begins to live and honestly her journey is wonderful.
What makes this book so special are its wonderful cast of characters. Beyond Delphie, we have Cooper who goes on his own journey in learning to find the joys he misses in life following a tragic death in his family. The way he and Delphie bounce off one another was fab but I’ll not say more than that so as not to spoil the story. I adored Mr Yoon, Delphie’s elderly neighbour and all of the other friends she meets along the way. This really is a true found family that worked so very well indeed, together they make you want to be a part of their wonderful group.
This book was so much fun, I laughed, I gasped, I literally sobbed, it’s really something special.
I loved this book!
It's a great story and cleverly done. I think romantic ghost stories are fast becoming a favourite of mine. Great characters and a lot of fun. Kirsty Greenwood is onto a winner with this book.
This book was such a quirky and cute romance book that not only focused on finding love but also finding your chosen family and learning how to live your life. It gives The Good Place vibes and I keep thinking what a great film this would be!
The characters in this story are so easy to love, especially Mr Yoon. This book has a way of making you feel like you know the characters personally, and like you want to a part of their group.
Was it predictable? Yes, but that didn’t take away from the enjoyment of reading this book. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who loves a good, light hearted romance.
