The love of my afterlife - the plot and name had me hooked from the start!
I really resonated with Delphie at some points of the book, especially with her being a bit of a ‘lone wolf’ as it was put. I did however find her quite childish at some points of the book. Especially around the ball scene, but then, what would you be like if you had ten days to find the love of your (after) life!
The plot was very cute and the twist with Em I loved! I didn’t see that coming.
My only criticism is I noticed the author used the word Trash whilst referring to the rubbish. This being set in London I expected more English slang than American.
All in all a very cute read, a good palette cleanser if you’ve been reading heavy books! It made me chuckle several times and nearly cry at least twice!
This was an incredibly original and fun read that thankfully focuses much more on life than death! I have to admit it took me a bit to get into this as Delphie herself isn’t much of a character at the start but she really blossoms as the story develops. She had some great escapes whilst trying to find Jonah and met a fabulous bunch of characters along the way. I loved the quirky twist at the end and there were plenty of giggles throughout. This is certainly unusual but works and once I was into it I did really enjoy it.
Aggghhh - I loved this book so much! What a great hook - you meet the love of your life, but you're already dead! I loved the forward momentum of this book, it was what kept me turning the pages: will Delphie manage to find Jonah after she makes a pact to be allowed to live for ten more days. It was a fabulous rom-com that will definitely appeal to readers who love Emily Henry and Beth O'Leary.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for letting me read an advanced copy, I loved it.
Super cozy and a very quick and easy read. Perfect to read on a quiet Sunday or any day! Loads of fun and humour I will definitely be looking for more bookd by this author.
What an absolutely fabulous read! Enjoyed this book so much - fast-paced, funny with snark and heartwarming moments.
Kept me on my toes too as I had multiple theories of what the ending would be and I’ll just say I’m thrilled there wasn’t a cliffhanger. I found it both light-hearted but also tense at multiple points, emotional and gut-wrenching at times.
I loved the growth in Delphie and the healing the characters go through. I also was a big fan of the whole cast of side characters.
My only critique would be I didn’t like when Merritt appears on earth - I’m not sure why that felt unbelievable to me as the whole premise of the book is fantastical but her magical notes were more palatable than her physical appearance - and not even as a ghost but as a solid human.
Overall 4.5.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cornerstone for this ARC in return for my unbiased review.
What a fun read. Lots of humour and a main character for who you can’t help cheering. Some of it was a little predictable but I didn’t see the twist coming at the end. Loved the character of Merritt. Will certainly look for more novels by this author.
Cute and funny a lot of the time, though cloyingly sweet in places.
I feel like this would make a great romcom with the right cast
I definitely felt more connected to Delphie as the novel progressed, I found it easy to read and read it in one sitting.
A chance for Delphie to have a second chance at her own life. Full of friendship and laughs, a cute neighbour and a run around London town. What a romantic adventure! I especially liked Merritt and her love of romance novels. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
I thought my initial advice to other readers would have to be about suspending belief and going with the flow for a book that is so truly ‘out there’ in terms of magic/afterlife. However, my actual advice is to stick with Delphie, even if you don’t like her at first!
It may sound brutally honest but I really wasn’t sure on this book for atleast 35-40% of it because of my dislike of Delphie- I felt I didn’t really care if she succeeded in her task because she wasn’t a nice person… then slowly, with the development of Cooper, there were hints of a caustic wit and a nicer protagonist emerging, and that kept me going and I’m so glad I did.
A full 4 stars for the overall book.
I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I absolutely loved it, it had humour and some sadness, great characters and a strong story. I was rooting for Delphie from the beginning, there were a couple of twists that I wasn’t expecting, and I will be recommending the book to everyone I know.
Really lovely read, when I first started I wasn't sure but it soon had me hooked, delphies character is great and the journey she goes on made me smile all the way through, slightly predictable but thoroughly enjoyable. Fave character had to merritt loved it
Absolutely loved it! Very funny and heart warming. Was it a little predictable? Maybe. Sometimes that’s just what you need! Loved reading this arc.
5/5 Stars
When Delphine unexpectedly passes aways, she accidentally meets the one in the afterlife, after he was sent there by mistake, She is then granted the opportunity to return back to the living and can stay, if she manages to find him and if he kisses her.
This book was such a quick and lovely romantic read, it gave such beautiful nods to common book tropes, and sometimes did it in such a humours manner.
I would like to be careful with the progression of the review, as I wouldn't want to spoil any parts of the book, but it's beautifully written and has some beautiful moments, about connection, family and friends.
It also balances well with the humour, especially when a book makes me laugh out loud like this one.
While Kirsty Greenwood is known for her fast pace romance stories, and while this book progress over the 10 day span, it feels far from rushed and progresses very well in terms of pace.
After reading this book, I look forward to delving into more books by Kirsty!
I would like to thank Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book, on the premise of an honest review!
I really enjoyed this! It was the perfect blend of romance, humour and poignancy, beautifully written and cleverly plotted, and I ended up staying up far too late to binge read it.
Delphie doesn't so much live as exist. She still lives in her parents' flat (without said parents) in the area she grew up in. She goes to work at a small local pharmacy where she rejects any attempts from her colleagues to socialise, she has no friends, no lovelife. She is 27, a once-kissed virgin with no friends and that is fine by her thank you very much. Because to say that Delphie has trust issues is like saying Henry VIII had marital issues thanks to constant bullying through High School which coincided with her father absenting himself permanantly and her mother first falling apart and then taking off in turn. The only time she shows her more human side is with her next door neigbour, an elderly, mute man who she keeps an eye on. And when she starts to choke on a burger it's Mr Yoon she's concerned about - who will make him breakfast and makes sure he turns off thegas when she's dead?
Death isn't quite what she expects and she is certainly not ready. And it seems typical that it's only when dead that she finds herself really connecting to another human being - not just a human being but a very sexy man who seems to find her sexy too. Another human who actually shouldn't be on the afterlife and before she gets a chance to find out anything beyond his first name is sent back to his own still-breathing body. But Delphie is in luck. Because her after-life guide is a serial romantic who recognises a meet cute when she sees one and makes a deal. She'll send Delphie back for ten days, and if Delphie can track down Jonah and he kisses her, then she can stay alive. But tracking down one Jonah in London isn't the easiest of tasks, especially with a countdown and so Delphie begrudgingly enlists the help of Cooper, her nemesis and downstairs neighbour, finding herself on a desperate manhunt through the city.
Delphie is a great heroine, prickly and funny and endearing. The Love of my Afterlife is the perfect escapist read. Highly recommended.
I say it every time, but I’m a sucker for these kind of romance books. Sometimes you just need an easy read with fun characters and a fun story. Cliches and tropes abound, even mentioned by some of the characters. But I had so much fun reading it, very much needed it right now.
Thank you so so so much to NetGalley for this. Loved it.
It's been a long time (too long) since we've heard anything from Kirsty Greenwood, and thankfully she's now back with a rom com that's a little bit different from the norm, in the fact that our lovebirds meet in the afterlife - what an interesting concept! A fun rom com that I'm sure readers of this genre are going to love.
5⭐️ I was very lucky and got this cute little romcom as an ARC from Netgalley! It will be released June 20th 2024 and I can’t recommend it enough! I’m not a big romcom reader if I’m honest but when I saw the netgalley email saying “How to Lose A Guy in Ten Days meets The Good Place” I couldn’t not try and get it! I’ve added one of my favourite quotes here but honestly, I laughed so much reading it! This is my first Kirsty Greenwood book but I’m definitely going to be reading more in future.
Huge thanks to the author and publisher for the chance to read this ARC, in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely devoured this, The Love of My Afterlife has everything, relatability, fun, The Good Place vibes in Evermore. Merritt is hilarious, I loved Delphie and Cooper’s chemistry from the off. It was a perfect read for me.
I LOVED this book.
It was everything I wanted from a book and more.
This isn't usually my genre but if all romcom's are this good I could definitely be persuaded to read more of them.
