What this book lacks in substance, it makes up for in humor and fantastic use (and subversion) of common shojo tropes. Main character Ichinose has been popular his whole life and has never had a rival until he meets Yuki. She's also a typical shojo-prince type character that rivals his own, and as Ichinose finds himself falling in love with her, he finds himself fulfilling the leading lady role a lot. By having a boy be the main pov character, we're already getting a different perspective from other shojos, but by also making him the center of tropes typically used for the female lead, there's an interesting subversion here that is more than just played for laughs. There's not a strong overarching plot, which I wish it had, but it's so funny and fun to read I didn't really mind.
It was a really cute and funny reading experience, i am really excited for volume 2, it was great and I can recommend it
Thank you so much to Net Galley and Kodansha comics for the opportunity to read and review this manga. This was definitely an adorable manga. I love all of the characters that were presented and the antics that they get into. I can also imagine this being an anime also. My only issue is that there were only some parts that didn't really feel like a cohesive plot. It only felt like a cohesive plot towards the end of the story. Overall, though, I would love to see how this story continues on. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars.
This is so cute - I couldn't stop grinning or laughing the entire time while reading. In a cheerful reversal and gentle poking of fun at classic shoujo manga tropes, Mogami and Ichinose seem to attract tropes, but instead casting Ichinose as the heroine. For all of Ichinose's usual cool charm, he just seems to keep falling into Mogami's arms, unable to be suave around her. It's definitely played for laughs, but in such a sweet way that you can't help falling for and rooting for both characters, especially since Ichinose is more concerned with not being able to express himself to Mogami than being upstaged by her or by being cast in typically female roles in scenes. Mogami is a bit of an airhead, and I hope we'll get to see more of her opening up to Ichinose or the others in future volumes - this is one I'm definitely keeping an eye on.
This was really cute and a great spin on the genre!
Ichinose is a very popular student but he's sometimes outstaged by Yuki and I have to say that I adored them both. He starts denying his feelings for her but he soon gets aware and flustered by them, and she's so unaware of the effect she has both on Mogami and the rest of the school, which is really fun to see. She's not the typical "she's beautiful but relatable" main character, her charms come by her confidence and good-natured heart.
It is very entertaining to see them interact and Ichinose trying to charm her: first because he cannot accept she's more popular than him but later him triyng to get her attention and, possibly, affection. Not only it's very enjoyable, it is also a refreshing romance and a great take to see the boy fall in love first and pursue the girl in a shy and clumsy way instead of the other way around.
The art is really well done and cute. I will for sure continue with this series.
This was a very cute, tongue in cheek gender reversal of shojo tropes.
The art is cute and the characters engaging. I would have preferred a more fluid overall story arc instead of the vignette styling, but I would still definitely continue reading this series.
