I absolutely loved this adventure. I’d not read the first book but had heard so many good reviews about it and so was excited to read this one. I loved Tourmaline - her spirit and determination made her a really likeable character and I loved the relationship she had with her friends and how each one of them brought their own personality and skills to the adventure, to help in different ways. Even though I hadn’t read the first book, I followed the characters who had been a part of Tourmaline’s first adventure and didn’t feel like I couldn’t follow what had happened previously. I found the story gripping and loved all the twists and turns.
A fabulously magical read that will captivate readers young and old. This book made my heart smile and I would highly recommend it.
I haven't read book one in the series but soon got to grips with the main characters and the problems facing Tourmaline as she battles to find out more about who and what she is. I loved the intrigue of the messages which kept appearing and these helped me to zoom through the story as I had to know how it was going to end.
The first book in this series, Tourmaline and the Island of Elsewhere was spectacular. This book is still good...but a little less attention grabbing. I still enjoyed it. I love the characters and the writing style. My only issue is that the whole book, despite being around 350 pages long felt like it could have been a handleful of transitionary chapters in another book, as opposed to a book itself. It's not like I felt it was dragging nor padded out...it's just a feeling I had like this book was just some extra story information you needed for the next in the series, but somehow didn't feel like a book itself
I realise this doesn't fully make sense, but it's just the feeling i got when reading.
Otherwise it is still an excellent read!
Tourmaline returns for another magical adventure in this the second book in this series.
Our protagonist has developed strong magical powers but sadly does not know how to control them, she is finding it difficult to mask this from everyone but her loyal buddies and all the resulting chaos the magic is causing. Then Tourmaline receives a postcard that offers answers and sets her off on a brand new adventure.
My 9 year old read this over the last couple of weeks , she was a big fan of the first book in the series and was happy to rediscover this magical world. While she enjoyed the book, Tourmaline is a brilliant brave character , this story did not grab her attention as much as the first book did but she did enjoy being reunited with the character and is looking forward to the next book in the series.
3.5 stars from her for the plotline but 5 stars for the characters.
After reading the first book on NetGalley, I became such a fan that I bought 5 or 6 copies of it to be given out to my students as presents.
This book is equally great. But it might be a bit hard for people who have not read the first book to follow the storyline. The language used in this book also seems to be a bit simpler, compared to the first one.
It is still a wonderful book.
