3.5 rounded up.

Visually stunning. So beautifully illustrated. Imaginative and truly captivating.

Some pages rhyme and some don’t which seemed disjointed and a few sentences didn’t quite make sense.

Thank you NetGalley and Empyrean Press for allowing me to read for my honest review.

What a beautiful and whimsical book! The poetry drew me in immediately, and I had to re-read to better appreciate the art-- both very inspiring for a children's book that I wish more adult poetry books could be illustrated in such a riveting way. 10/10!

“What if when night falls, dreams come true? / And in the morning, no one knew.”

This was such a fun illustrated and wonderful book about dreams. The story flowed seamlessly from one scene to the next. There were so many pictures and parts to this book - I would love to purchase a physical copy for my child.

Thank you to NetGalley and Empyrean Press for the free eARC in exchange for an honest review! 🫶🏼

The actual writing is a little bit weak, the flow and rhythm could have used some tweaking. However it's still nice enough I can imagine a child having fun reading or listening to it.

What really makes this stunning is Wei's art. She captures perfectly what a dream is. The colors are so vivid and they just jump out at you. It's very whimsical. Some of the pages are gorgeous enough to hang on your walls.

Looking forward to see what Wei illustrates next!

P.S, if your kid likes this, try Shy Willow by Cat Min!

What a beautiful illustrated bed time story for all ages!! The Indie book, Sunflowers Rose in a Midnight Sky by Avery Davis caught my eye with the vivid artwork staring back at me. It is a whimsical tale that is out of this world; into another realm, reminding me of the adventures of Alice In Wonderland. In addition, it brings about a vivid imagination to all that escapes into this book, consisting of purple cows, marshmallow clouds drifting into the airy sky with a grand array of colorful planets. Not only is this book poetic and mesmerizing from the cover to its entirety, it brings you to a land far away with imaginary scenery and mystical creatures. As the reader, I was led into the gates of heaven and peace within the depths of my soul. I was sincerely whisked away into a trance, with many sights to soar about as the "sunflowers rise in a midnight sky "

Highly recommend this book to all types of readers of any age!

The artwork in this book is absolutely stunning. I found myself poring over each page to soak in all of the details and identify the different media used. I am looking forward to sharing these pictures with my preschooler and discussing the different images and art styles used. I look forward to finding more works by this artist.

The accompanying verse did not really grab me. I could not identify a particular meter or rhyme scheme, nor did the ideas flow smoothly.

Such a beautiful whimsical book. I love the collage style illustrations, which remind me of some of Eric Carle's work.

There was a deep sense of imagination throughout this which was absolutely delightful and it was made even more so because of the situation of the writing somewhere between prose and poetry. It would be the perfect bedtime story for kids because of the creativity and the illustrations were incredible and completely tied into the concept of imagination. I loved this so much! It was beautifully written and illustrated!

A picture book, art book, and poetry book all in one, Sunflowers Rise in a Midnight Sky is a unique and beautiful work. Each page is a new thought, brimming with joyful imagery of a whimsical night where magicians check their coats and cats perform comedy shows.

Illustrations are gorgeous and bright with a background of bright blue to represent the beauty of night. Tissue paper and other mediums are used to form land mass, trees, and rainbows. Wei does a fantastic job of interpreting the poetry, so much so that I’m not sure which came first, the art or the text.

There isn’t really a story in this book as the poetry is more metaphor and imagery than a plot, but the poetry is well done. Davis plays with form, shifting the words sideways or curving them over images. I particularly enjoyed the passes with alliteration like: Streetlights make spotlights/for Comedian Cool Cats

This is a gorgeous book, fun to read and to look at.

The artwork is the highlight of this book—it's incredibly unique, colorful, and vivid, drawing you right into the story. The plot is light, fitting for a tale about a dream, and at times, it feels like a fever dream, brimming with creativity and imagination. Kids would likely enjoy reading this before bedtime due to its whimsical, silly, and magical nature. The book reads more like a poem than a traditional story, featuring some nice rhymes. Overall, this book is stunning and beautiful. While I would buy it more for the artwork than the story, it's incredibly well done.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. These are my own thoughts and opinions.

This book is stunning! The artwork is mesmerizing and the whimsical nature of the illustrations makes it a perfect pick for bedtime. I feel the prose could have had better flow, but it didn’t detract from the overall quality of the storytelling. I asked my library to purchase a copy and I can’t wait to use it for a storytime!

This fairytale-like dream will make you start counting sheep before bed again and crave cotton candy!!
I loved how complex the descriptions were, it immerses you in the whole scene and Tang Wei’s illustrations are touching. The vivid imagery kind of brings me back childhood memories. The nostalgia I felt .. Definitely worth a read it’s short and lovely.
I was sure I would enjoy it a lot as poetry is something I’ve also tried and loved writing.

'What if when night falls, dreams come true?'

The poet poses the question and then expounds on the premise with a variety of fantastical scenarios. the reader is invited to consider a variety of whimsical ideas. Tang Wei has created a variety of stunning illustrations that spark the imagination and invite the reader to truly consider each idea. The phrases of the poem are superimposed upon the art, which helps tie everything together. Unfortunately, the font colors are sometimes ill considered and a lack of contrast may make the words difficult for some people to read. That minor problem aside, this is a book that will encourage readers both young and old to imagine all sorts of possibilities. I highly recommend it as a book for any child's library.
