Daniel and Alex are heading to Canada to live at Alex's family cabin. Daniel lost his job, then their house. From American big city living to Canadian backwoods country living. Just when they think their lives couldn't be any different, something happens that would change their lives forever.
This my first book by Kate Hewitt. This book was completely different than I thought it would be. I thought it would be about a woman who rediscovers herself and becomes a better version of herself through reflection. Boy, wasn't I in for a surprise.
The first 17% of the book was slow and I thought I had the plot figured out, then BANG!! everything I thought was going to happen changed. I couldn't put this book down. I still feel that Alex, and every character in the book, rediscover themselves and become a better version, but not in the way I initially thought.
If I had to criticize anything, it would be that I wish we read more about Daniel and Sam's journey. The ending left me wanting more, and not because it wasn't good, but because I was so wrapped up in the story and I didn't want it to end.
Thank you to Netgalley, Kare Hewitt, and the publishers for this free ebook. This review is 100% my own and honest review.

A big thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Kate Hewitt's latest work of fiction. I had forgotten the brief synopsis I had read previously so I was in for a shock when, shortly into the novel, a nuclear holocaust occurred.
This is the saga of Alex's families remote cottage in Ontario, Canada. I was caught up in their personalities and lives as each dealt with how to both survive and pull together as a family to do so. In the beginning the family is fractured and the children are not happy to give up their posh lifestyle to move to the "boonies" due to the loss of Daniel's job.
This was a real page turner and I savored reading each new twist and turn faced by the family to survive. I recommend this as a book club read - so much to ponder!

These days, Alex can hardly bring herself to face her husband Daniel. After a blindsiding betrayal and the fallout that followed, she's packing up the pieces of her life--her family's life--and moving to the cottage at Lost Lake where her parents once lived. And here in the idyllic stillness of rural Canada, maybe, just maybe, Alex and Daniel can start over.
But what happens when the chance to start over never comes?
In such a good way, "The Last Stars in the Sky" could not have been further from what I expected. To give too much of the plot away is to, in my mind, rob this story of it's gut-punching twist that gives it so much of its binge-worthy momentum. I found myself pleasantly immersed in Kate Hewitt's work; I'm new to her writing, and settled into this very-clearly-middle-aged-women's-fiction perfectly fine.
Know this: "The Last Stars in the Sky" is very much worth a read, and will ring familiar to many readers because of some popular series (and movies) in recent years. Go in blind, and when you're in the mood to be open-minded about a story; this isn't a perfect book, but it's a compelling, well-paced, and thought-provoking one.

Not what I expected but very thought provoking. Just about everyone's worst nightmare, and who knows how we will deal with it. A difficult read at times, but interesting.

THE LAST STARS IN THE SKY was one of those books that took me by surprise in a great way! Alex and her husband Daniel leave their home and life in Connecticut behind after Daniel loses his job. They uproot their teenage daughter Mattie, who is bitter over leaving a troubled boyfriend behind, and bring a younger daughter as well. The first 20% of the book starts in an introspective way without a lot of plot development, mostly reflecting on the family’s troubles. Then the big twist/reveal comes, and we discover what the novel is really about(!!). It’s impossible to review the book properly without spoiling that there is a worldwide nuclear attack and this quickly becomes a post-apocalyptic survival novel where it's every person for themselves. I was so excited when I found out Kate Hewitt, one of my favorite authors, was writing a novel in this genre!!
As Daniel leaves Alex and his daughters behind in order to go back to Connecticut and get their son Sam, they are forced to fend for themselves with society quickly crumbling. This book was unlike any Kate Hewitt book I’ve read before, but I was rivetted. Very well written. I love post-apocalyptic novels and the struggle to find food and supplies and figure out how to get through winter and make it one more month was written in a very exciting way. My one criticism is that the ending is a bit abrupt. I would have liked more resolution and answers. However, overall this is an excellent read that I really enjoyed. 5/5 stars.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from NetGalley and Storm Publishing for review purposes.

This book was not what I thought! It admittedly started a little slow for me but I am so glad I kept going. It is a book about perseverance and a parent‘s love and will to survive for their children. It is full of despair and fear of the unknown and how we as a society deal with the unknown and change. Reading about how Alex and Kerry's relationship grows and adapts was so beautiful and my favourite part! Everyone needs a Kerry in their life. I will be recommending this book to people if maybe this is outside their norm or they want a heartfelt end-of-times read.

Wow, this book gripped me. So many unexpected twists and turns. My heart will never be the same.
After their lives have imploded, Alex & her family decide to go up to Canada and live in her parents’ old rustic cabin for 6 weeks. Her husband has recently lost his job, her daughter is suspended from school, and she needs them to reconnect as a family. After being out in the cabin for just a short time, they receive news that nuclear attacks have taken place on multiple large cities in the US & around the world. This quaint family get away is now a true fight for survival.
I was slightly annoyed with the twist of fate, but found myself not being able to turn the pages fast enough. The author wrote in such vivid detail that some readers would find it hard to "unsee" the level of authenticity conveyed by the plot. The dual narrative structure also allowed for more emotional connection, and I appreciate how the alternating perspectives also built suspense and tension.
Get ready for a roller coaster of emotion!

This was my first book by this author and I loved ! I had a hard time putting this down! I love the whole are where this book took place! Such suspense at times I couldn’t stand it! Highly highly recommend

Not at all what I expected but a fantastic surprise. A proper page turner that left me wanting more. What would you do during a nuclear attack? How far would you go to get to your family? A story of hope and desperation. Truly wonderful

Not a fan of this one...
I usually love Kate Hewitt's novels, but this one was a little too depressing and farfetched for me. I skipped through a lot of it because it just didn't hold my interest. With that said, I will read more of Ms. Hewitt's books. She is one of my favorites!

This was a very different genre for me and I truly enjoyed it. The plot was both scary and heartbreaking at the same time. The whole concept was very thought provoking..... how often do we actually think about having to survive such a devastation. Definitely a story that will stay with the reader long after it is read
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was definitely not the story I expected! A page turner and at times seemed too extreme even given the circumstances (a spoiler so you will need to read it to find out!). Every chapter ended with an even more crazy cliff hanger. The end of the story was also unexpected and rather an anti-climax, but I'm guessing this is the first of a series. It certainly raises a lot of thought-provoking topics, and although in some ways it is almost a 'light' read in terms of its writing, would probably be a good pick for some bookclubs. I think the story and writing is a 3.5 stars but 4 stars because of its daring and page-turning! And in today's world, especially America, such things could happen...

Liked how the book starts out, with the family having to go to an isolated cabin in Canada after the husband loses his job and their house is foreclosed. Angry teens with poor wi-fi makes for limited contact. Would have liked the book best if it was the only issue, but the terror attacks and violence threw me a bit. Might just be me, but started to skim over those parts. Still though, would recommend this book and do like this author.

The Last Stars in the Sky looks like a nice relaxing read. It is not. I'm not sure I would have read this one had I known what it is about. However, I am very glad I did. I would have missed out on a great read.
This is an emotional one. Great characters. A story of survival.
I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it there.
My only wish was that it went on a little longer at the end. I wanted to know more further in the future.
Thanks to netgalley and Storm Publishing for the advance copy.

Thanks to Net Gallley, Storm Publishing for the opportunity yo read Kate Hewitt's The Last Stars in the Sky.
Thought provoking and heartfelt, but difficult to read at times.

I was not expecting a book with such a beautiful cover and a title “The Last Stars in the Sky” to have the twist in the plot that it did. I don’t want to give too much away so others can also have that moment of surprise. There was good character development and the events kept me hooked. The small time jumps worked well, however the end seemed rushed, but does set itself up for future novels. 3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Kate Hewitt has thought out a thrillingly immersive plot for this story which places a regular family who have got themselves into a financial situation after husband Daniel looses his job. They decide to relocate to Alex’s parents old log cabin in the wilds of Canada only to find themselves entering Into Armageddon as the USA is wiped out by a series of nuclear blasts. The story quickly picks up pace exploring how each of the characters comes to terms with a dangerous new world and how they fight to keep the family together. I like how the story splits into two sections as it follows both Daniel and Alex’s lives as they part in order for Daniel to attempt to rescue their son Sam trapped in his university building.
The family eake out an existence facing dangers and building relationships with a few other people along the way knowing it is just a matter of time until bands of vigilantes find them.
The ending is fast paced and I couldn’t put it down and then wished it wasn’t over.
A great read and one not to be missed.

A HUGE thank you to Net Gallley, Storm Publishing and author, Kate Hewitt for providing this ARC of The Last Stars in the Sky. I rate this book five stars!
This story was fascinating and quite thought provoking. The idea of attacks on our major cities is frightening and sadly, real. What would we do? I was reminded of where I was on 9/11. The day of being sent home because of the pandemic. The scare of Y2K. All these memories etched in head kept this book in my thoughts from start to
finish. There were some surprising events in the plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see how the author continues with this story.

I read a lot of thrillers. I was looking to take a break and read a family drama. When I picked this book up I thought it was about a family facing divorce. Let’s just say this book surprised me. I can’t even really say what it’s about because I feel like it spoils it.
This book was about survival. It was about how people deal with trauma and violence and band together to make it through. I would definitely label this book a thriller because it was full of action. I held my breath the last few pages because I literally didn’t know what would happen.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this arc. Make sure to get your copy Jan 24th!

I just finished this book today and it has come up in my thoughts quite often since then. I even discussed it with my husband on the relevance of the content in our current times. I have to say it was thought provoking and especially disturbing, but I could not stop listening to it via voice view. I even repeated the last 3 chapters since so much was happening and I didn’t want to miss anything.
The author did quite a bit of research on how things would be in the situation surrounding the story. Alex and Daniel truly stepped up to the plate. There is so much behind the scenes of the story if you pay attention to the characters. Each of them grew and expanded themselves outside the box, adapted and overcame. Who would we become if we were put in these situations, and how would we handle them? Would we figure it and do what we could to provide for our family, we cannot depend on the government to provide for us.
I am so glad I read this; it will stay with me for a long time. Thank you, Ms. Hewitt.
I received an ARC from Storm Publishing and NetGalley for my unbiased review – This one comes in with high 5 stars.
