Georgina Drake, taking pictures of the Hartington Hall, when she finds Karen Berry dead on the floor. Karen Berry had plenty of enemies. Karen had argued with her husband, alienated her two step-daughters, and fired the housekeeper for thief. This left Georgina wondering about her death. DI Colon Bradshaw put the household through interviews. While walking Bertie, her spaniel, digs up a human skeleton, and Georgina is once again in the middle of a mystery. What dark secrets at Hartingdon Hall connects the two crimes? Can Georgina unmask the killer before they strike again? This book is the 2nd in A Georgina Drake Mystery series by Kate Hardy. Georgina is a serious character along with Sybbie, her friend, as well. With twists and turns and reading to the end of the book, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like cozy mysteries then you would love this book.
Another fabulous story in this awesome series, I love Georgina and Doris and her musketeers, Sybbie Cesca and Jodie add to that Bertie and of course there is DI Colin Bradshaw, if you love a good mystery then this is one to pick up, it is such a page turner.
Georgie is asked by Sybbie to help out with taking some photos for her goddaughters at the historic estate of Hartington Hall, she brings Bertie along for the day as well, when Georgie arrives at the historic ice house to take some photos there is a body at the bottom, who turns out to be the second wife of Lord Henry Berry, Karen Berry, is it an accident or is it murder, it appears that Karen is not a well-liked person who in the four years she has been married to Henry has done her best to alienate not only his daughters, Hattie and Posy but staff who have worked at the estate for many years. She has not been very loving to her own daughter Ellen either who spends a lot of time with the bats that are protected and live in the ice house.
The police have been called and DI Colin Bradshaw arrives to start the investigation, this is the second body that Georgie has uncovered and her and Colin are very good friends, not only that but when Georgie’s dog Bertie does some digging he uncovers human bones, two bodies in one day and again Georgie is caught up in the mystery again.
Georgie is very good at investigating murders herself it seems and with a bit of help from Doris she uncovers a lot about the mystery of the bones found and with more searching uncovers a lot of facts about Karen Berry and her past, all of which she passes onto Colin, but will they uncover the truth before Georgie is in danger again?
I loved this one from start to finish a one sitting read again, it is so well written and a must read for any cosy mystery lover, I was guessing till the very end and I can’t wait for book three to arrive, Thank you Kate Hardy for another brilliant story.
My thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for my digital copy to read and review.
I love a little quirky detail in my cosy mysteries and a ghost certainly adds a nice twist to this story. This is the second of this series that I have read and I am already looking forward to the next one. I’m really enjoying the tenderly written developing relationship between Georgie and her policeman. Lovely and satisfying.
Absolutely the epitome of a cosy crime- there is of course a body but it is not gritty, dark and gruesome, more of an inconvenience between cream teas!
I absolutely love the character of Georgina and have even warmed to the ghost element of the book far more than I did in the first of the series- Doris is a great tool for adding drama and intrigue!
An all round great read!
The Body in the Ice House is a delightful and intriguing novel, the second in Karen Hardy's Georgina Drake mystery series. Georgiana ( Georgie) Drake is a fifty plus photographer, recent widow, mother of two adult children, in a budding relationship with DI Colin Bradshaw and a bit of a sleuth. I forgot to mention that she has a lovely ghost, named Doris, living in her home. The novel begins with Georgie and her dear friend Lady Wyatt Sybbie on their way to Hartington Hall, the home of Sybbe's goddaughters, Henriette (Hattie) and Rosiland (Posy) Berry to photograph their lovely estate and grounds. While touring the grounds, they find a body in the ice house. Lo and behold it is the body of Lady Ellingham, Karen Berry, the new wife of Hattie and Posy' s father, Henry Berr.y. The girls had a rather turbulent relationship with their stepmother, referring to her as Fault Finder General, and the four year marriage of Henry and Karen was less than blissful. Of course, Karen's teenage daughter Ellen appeared devastated by the death of her mother, and immediately accused Hattie and Posy of hating her and most likely killing her. I hope that I have shared just enough to pique your interest. I failed to mention the subplots in which Georgiana is trying to solve how two ghosts died. I enjoyed The Body in the Ice House, while a fairly light read, was suspenseful, funny and captivating; I. definitely recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the opportunity to read an ARC of The Body in the Ice House; that in no way influenced my review. 4 stars.
Thank you for the chance to read this ARC in return for my honest opinion
I had read the first book in the series and had been unsure about the 'ghost' connection but I had enjoyed it so looked forward to reading this one.
And I was so surprised to find it even better than the first. The story flowed much more easily and was an easy read.
It is a cosy mystery as expected with intrigue and murder thrown in but follows on the story of 'Doris' which it seems is to be continued.
I could almost see those words written at the end - which for me was slightly abrupt.
Well written, it fleshed out the characters from the previous book while bringing in new ones.
A great way to while away a Winter's evening
Georgina Drake s job photographing beautiful Hartington Hall takes a dramatic turn when she enters the ancient ice house to find the lady of the manor dead on the floor. Karen Berry had plenty of enemies. Her death could have been an accident, but when Georgina hears how Karen had argued with her husband Henry, alienated her two step-daughters Hattie & Posy, and fired the long-standing housekeeper for theft, she’s not convinced. As the police, led by DI Colin Bradshaw, round up the household for interviews, Georgina takes her suspicions and her boisterous spaniel Bert for a walk through the grounds. And is horrified when he digs up human bones. Georgina is once again in the middle of a baffling mystery.
The second outing for Georgie & another captivating cosy mystery. I’m really enjoying this series Georgie is a widow who is hard of hearing & wears hearing aids, she can also talk to Doris an eighteen year old who died in Georgie’s farmhouse half a century ago. She’s also dating Colin. The murder of Karen is intriguing as things aren’t what they seem as Colin & Georgie dig deeper. There’s also the mystery surrounding the bones by the oak tree, which added to the book. The characters have depth & I love the dynamics in the relationships plus there’s an adorable spaniel too. I look forward to many more in the series
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Georgie Drake accompanied her good friend Sybbie to Hartington Hall to photograph it and the surrounding gardens and buildings in preparation for opening the Hall to the public. Hattie and Posy, daughters of the household and Sybbie's god daughters, knew this was a good way for the Hall to make money for its upkeep. The elderly residence was beautiful but the money needed to keep it in good shape was astronomical. After photographing the house, they headed toward the old ice house, currently locked and a home to the local bats, a protected species. It was when they went inside - unusually the door was unlocked - that Georgie discovered a body at the bottom of the hole which had kept ice frozen back in the day. When it was discovered to be the second wife of Henry Berry, owner of Hartington Hall, police were called, with DI Colin Bradshaw, Georgie's good friend, arriving on the scene.
As the investigation into the death ramped up, Georgie began to look into events herself. What she found, along with what Colin couldn't discuss, saw Georgie and Sybbie put themselves in danger. And when Bertie, Georgie's spaniel, dug up human bones in the grounds of the Hall, that proved to be at least a century old, Georgie's investigation into the past began in earnest. Would they discover the answers to both deaths?
The Body in the Ice House is the 2nd in A Georgina Drake Mystery series by Kate Hardy and I loved it! Georgie is an excellent character and her friend Sybbie is as well. Bertie is adorable, while Doris is perfect! I'm looking forward to the next in the series, hopefully not too far away. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Well what a combination; an Ice house containing bats and a dead body. Another enjoyable book from Kate Hardy. I very much enjoyed the previous book "The Body at Rookery Barn" and the setting, Norfolk, is a favourite county of mine. It is a very gentle easy to read well written book. Thanks to Net Galley and Storm Publishing for the chance to ARC this book.
Georgie find herself in yet another pickle when Sybbie brings her to visit her 2 god daughters to take pictures of their estate for a future project. While doing so, they come across the body of the lady of the house in the Ice House.
This cozy mystery is just that, cozy. It is an easy read, easy to follow book with a few twists of its own. This is a new series to me and I didnt realize there was a bit of whimsy included as well with the ghost of Doris that follows Georgie and finds her own mysteries to unravel. Georgie is also trying to help Doris solve her own mystery so that perhaps she can rest one day too.
Overall, it is a solid quick read in the cozy mystery genre. I recommend this book and will likely go back and read the first book in the series!.
Thank you to Kate Hardy, Storm publishing a d NetGalley for this eARC in return for my honest review.
Such a great read! I do love a cozy crime and this was no exception. This was a lot of fun and followed Georgina as she becomes involved in not one but two mysteries, past and present. I really enjoyed the setting and the other characters who all added to the dynamics of the book. Five stars from me!
Georgina Drake has settled, after her recent scare with a body showing up on her property. Now, she spends her time with friends, working on her photography, and beginning a relationship with the handsome detective, Colin.
When she goes to photograph the home of some friends of Sybbie, they discover a body at the bottom of the ice house, leading to questions of who WOULDN'T want to murder the lady of the manor. While the investigation is beginning, another body, is unearthed, though this one is only skeletal remains. Now there are two bodies to investigate, and time may be running out. It seems that someone is wanting to stop Georgina from asking questions, or uncovering who might have committed the crime.
This was a fantastic read. I could not put it down, and finished in one sitting. I love a good cozy mystery and this ticks all the boxes. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author, and I hope that she had many more planned!
A fairly straightforward murder mystery in the cosy crime genre, involving Georgina Drake, a photographer and a woman of a certain age, who comes across a woman’s body in the ice house of an old country estate in Norfolk. Her romantic interest is a handsome local detective and she is also assisted in her investigations by Doris, the ghost of a young woman who died some fifty years earlier who communicates with Georgina through her hearing aid and whose death Georgina is also investigating. Doris, in her communications with the local afterlife, comes across another murder mystery, this time in the 19th century, which also features.
Whilst the involvement of a ghost in the investigative process is quirky and original, the murders themselves were fairly straightforward and predictable, leaving only the circumstances of Doris’ death unresolved and to be followed up in a sequel. Whilst it’s good to see a more mature female protagonist solving crimes, the plot was nothing to write home about.
With thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.
A cosy mystery set in my home county of Norfolk. Georgie Blake, photographer turned sleuth with the help of the voice of Doris the ghost who communicates through Georgia's hearing aids. She turns up at Hartington Hall to take photos for Posy and Hattie to set up the hall for visitors. But on arriving at the Ice House Georgie finds a body. Turns out its Karen, the disliked Lady of the Manor. Added to this an historic death is also bring investigated. I loved the way the past and present investigations were dealt with. A perfect read for fans of Midsomer Murders
An absolutely perfect cozy crime mystery with all the classic elements plus some more. The setting is the magnificent old and slightly crumbling Harrington Hall with its larger than life resident family. The head of the family has lost his wife recently and hastily remarried, not a popular choice with everyone, including his two daughters who struggle to bond with his new young wife and her odd ideas and obvious distaste for the countryside life.
A friend of the girls’ godmother is signed up to take some publicity photos of the house ready for its planned opening to the public and unwittingly finds a dead body in the ice house. When bones are found in the garden we suddenly have two mysteries running parallel.
I loved the very human stories that interlace these plot lines and the lovely whimsical setting and characters. The main characters are extremely likeable which also helps. The fact that a ghost is helping with the investigations is also a real bonus, who doesn’t like a bit of a ghost story? Top notch, looking forward to some of the loose ends being tied up in future books but you’ve definitely left me craving more.
The Bodyinthe Icehouse is a fantastic cozy mystery. I loved the fast paced edge of the seat plot. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance ebook. This is my unbiased review.
Every once in a while I've found myself in the mood for a cozy murder mystery, and decided to try out Kate Hardy's second book The Body in the Ice House. Full disclosure - I have not read her first book but there are enough pieces of background scattered throughout the book that I felt I had enough information to read through the second book. I'll likely go back and read the first one to get the remainder of the story, as it sounds like I missed out on some pretty exciting events.
There are two parallel mysteries that Georgina stumbles upon while in her duties as a photographer. I've done professional photography, and definitely have not encountered this, but I will say when I go shed hunting with my dogs (shed hunting involves finding shed antlers - not actual hunting) I'm always nervous they'll sniff out something a little extra. Georgina gets to experience this first hand when her own dog digs up a human skeleton shortly after she discovers the body of the estate owner's wife.
I enjoyed that Georgina was not our stereotypical murder mystery heroine. Tidbits of the supernatural were sprinkled in, as well as the trickle effect that events in the past can have on our present day. There's also story progression and development of the characters as the book goes along, and from what I could tell the series. It was a fairly quick and easy read, with enough to keep the reader engaged throughout the book. I have one or two questions I would have liked answered, but overall everything major was answered. It's a good cozy mystery if you're looking for a murder mystery but not the overly intense true crime genre style.
Please be advised I received a free Advance Reader's Copy (ARC) from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Body in the Ice House, set at Hartington Hall in Norfolk features Georgie, a photographer with an unfortunate habit of finding dead bodies. What a wonderful book, a cosy crime mystery with a twist, the twist is Doris, The Ghost. I live in a very old house and I think we have a ghost, he’s a very helpful ghost but sadly I can’t communicate with him. I really felt that I was at Hartington Hall and the character of Sybbie is so like someone I know, it could have been her. The author obvious knows and loves Norfolk and history and this clearly comes through in her writing .Delightfully pleasant and unpleasant characters populate a book where a modern murder and a historical murder are investigated in tandem in a Stately Home and its grounds. There is a little romance sprinkled in and the back story of Doris links the previous book in the series to what I hope will be a third. Will I read more, most definitely
Another book I could not put down! I did not read the 1st book of this series (yet!), but it wasn't needed! I love this book from page one, and it really kept me going until the end. I love the cozy mystery feeling of this book and it keeps you guessing until the end. Even though I guessed who done it early on, it kept me guessing if I was correct until the very end! Highly recommend! 5 stars here!
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for access to this book!
Another Georgina and Doris story and I loved it!
Even though if we have murders & secrets it feels really light which is a happy change to other grim books I usually read.
The supernatural in these stories are fantastically written and very fun and the great mix of characters makes it really fun.
I hope there will be a 3rd book!
Thank you Netgalley!
