The heartwarming story of a young woman who gets pregnant while serving her country and struggles to keep her son while facing the prejudice against unwed mothers. This book is less about Evie’s time with the ATS as a gunner girl, than her life after the war.

Very superficial emotionally, descriptively and in context. Much of thie meat of this book is after the war. The war is raced through, so if that is your interest you will not be satisfied. The fact that she didn’t twig on the eye colour is absurd- that is maybe a spoiler. The second half of the book has more purpose and is better written. Not sure why the first half is so banal

Thank you Netgalley for this great book.
Evie’s story is a great book, a story of a young girl leaving home to join the army in ww2. She meets and falls in love with Matt, they plan their future after the war is over. Matt is a pilot who is killed in action, after his death Evie discovers she is pregnant. Shunned by her family she goes into a mother and baby home to give birth. There the fight to keep her baby starts. I loved this book with all its wonderful characters, and a great story. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

This story is about Evie who leaves home to become a gunner girl during WWII. Along the way she connects with 2 other women on a train on the way to their training. She meets a pilot and falls in love. When tragedy strikes Evie is alone and pregnant, shunned by her family. The story follows her journey trying to survive with her baby. There were some good characters in this story and I enjoyed reading it. If you like historical fiction I recommend this book. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

What a beautiful story. We follow Evie Sinclair who decides to get away from her domineering mother by joining the Gunner girls.
It’s a way of life that Evie is accustomed to, following orders. This all start when she meets up which the journey to start training, meeting up with Lily Grainger and Gloria Russell on the train. Friendships that last.
Evie soaks up the information during training and is thrilled when Gloria and Lily make it through to be selected for the Ack Zack’s. Evie becomes a predictor, sending out warnings for the pilots.
Evie’s life takes a new turning when she meets RAF pilot Matt Goodwin! All runs smoothly until mat suggests making it more permanent, does Evie want that?
Evie meets some wonderful characters along the way, Mrs Hodgson, Bencher, Mabel and Maisie. Who have all given something she missed from her mother.

I loved the selection of characters and the fact that Evie was so naturally giving considering all she had experienced.
I look forward to the next book from this author.
