This is only the second entry in this series, and I’m already a fan. A mix between procedural and supernatural, it offers some very thrilling moments. Now that the characters and their quirks are set, the dialogues really shine. Some familiar faces return, but this is Maria and Frankie’s novel. The plot is very entertaining. A teenage girl, who happens to be the daughter of the police chief, disappears inside a creepy abandoned asylum and Maria and Frankie are called in to investigate, as part of their new task force devoted to possible unexplained phenomena. What they find out surprised and delighted me, though I can’t explain why or I’d give away a big spoiler. I loved the interactions between the leads and the plot twists. I still found some dialogues a little British for American characters but, again, it’s a small detail in a very entertaining novel. The creepy atmosphere offers some very unsettling passages and the inclusion of a real celebrity worked well here. A satisfying read.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Storm Publishing.
The story starts very strongly with four teens doing a ghosthunting trip at night in a desolate mansion that used to be a hospital for mental patients. Four go in, but only three come out, and the disappearance is investigated by New York's contemporary "Fox & Mulder" duo. Enter the ghosts but also the demon who rules all demons and who has been feeding on the pour souls who died in the hospital. It is a fast paced page turner with lots of twists and turns and sidestories, and it even has a world famous actress as one of the characters.
The characters are all well crafted and are perfectly outfitted to continue playing a role in future installments. The quartet formed by Maria, Frankie and the golden girls Missy and Emilia have funny dialogues and form a strong bond and a good basis for future adventures.
I'm usually all in favor of leaving all logic behind when reading a horror novel, but that is what I struggled with here. I don't know if it is because I expected more a detective story than a pure haunted house horror tale, but I just couldn't get past some assumptions and beliefs, especially the time travel was a bit too much for me.
A sincere thanks to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and the author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book is seriously goofy, but I liked it. It was a fun and fast read. The setting is satisfactorily spooky. There's way too much going on, with ghosts, demons, time travel, portals, Marilyn Monroe, psychics, paranormal police, and the whole shebang. But it was enjoyable. I would read more books in this series in the future. It was fast-paced and had a decent ending.
Thanks netgalley for giving me an early copy of this book, I read the first one in this series The Haunting on West 10th street and this was just as good, you don’t have to read the first one but it will help with the characters as they appear in both books.
Four friends went ghost hunting in a desolate building which used to be The Beacon Hill Asylum but only three friends came home.
That is when Homicide Detective Maria Miller was called in to investigate what happened in the asylum and to find out what happened to the fourth teenager.
Loved this book and the reference to a famous movie star.
Wow. Just wow! Supernatural is not a genre I typically read. But I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I consumed this book. To be honest I wasn’t even sure what the book was about when I requested to read it. I saw that it was written by Helen Phifer and that’s all I needed to know. I’ve read several of her other books and loved them so much.
I noticed this was the 2nd book in the series so to do my due diligence I went back and read the 1st book before starting this one.
This book is so well written that it literally sucks you in. The characters and events are so descriptive that you can’t help but feel like you’re in it. While Beacon Hill isn’t a place I’d like to visit, it feels like through this book I’ve been there.
I enjoy the partnership that Maria & Frankie have. I do wish that Frankie took more of a risk sometimes. It seems that Maria is the one taking all the risks. The one thing that I wish there was more of in this book is more information about the relationship between Maria & Harrison. I so enjoyed that in the last book and was looking forward to seeing if or how their relationship had developed.
All in all I’m glad I took a chance on a book outside my preferred genre. I hope there will be a 3rd book in the series.
This is a super fun and creepy story. We have an old asylum and a group of teens who want to explore it and hopefully catch some evidence of ghosts. The creepy and scary stuff starts for them almost immediately and Helen Phifer did such a great job of describing the asylum that it felt like I was right there with the teens experiencing some spooky stuff.
When one of the teens goes missing inside the asylum we then begin to follow two Detectives Maria and her partner they have experience with the strange and mysterious and are uniquely qualified to help find the girl.
I thought the characters were great and well-written, and the atmosphere really sucked me in. There were some moments where I had to suspend some disbelief but even with those I found the story and characters enjoyable.
This is bk 2, and the first book I've read in this series. I have already downloaded bk 1 and hope to get to it soon and look forward to seeing these detectives solve some more supernatural mysteries.
Thank you Netgalley for approving my request to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Her Lost Soul had all the elements that I love in a book. An abandoned building, creepy atmosphere, paranormal, police procedure. Unfortunately I did not enjoy this at all.
This book begins with four teenagers who break into an abandoned asylum that is quite creepy with a sinister past. Only three of them come out that night. Her 3 friends have no idea what happened to her. We then follow 2 quirky detectives who are involved in bizarre and more supernatural cases. They investigate the asylums past and interview former employees trying to figure out more about the building and what could have happened to her. The story is told from both present day and from the past as the mystery begins to unravel.
This book felt like YA book, which is not my cup of tea. I don't want to get into spoilers but for those who read it, the "twist' in the book was a bit out there for me. I did not like the direction it went in or how it played out. I wish I had liked it better because it had everything there for me. I did like enjoy the detectives and also the atmosphere of the book was quite creepy. I will give this author another chance
I definitely think this book will appeal to a lot of people, so if the plot is interesting to you, give it a chance!
This book will be releases February 28th 2024
If you are looking for a chilling, ghostly read this is for you. Not my favourite genre but i did read it. It didn’t scare me or give me the chills which was disappointing. I will stick with this authors police stories about Morgan.
Thank you Net Galley & Helen Phifer for an advanced copy of this.
Firstly I would like to thank netgalley and storm publishing and the fantastic author Helen phifer for an early copy of her book to read.
This is the second book,I've read the first.four teenagers enter an abandoned building a psychatic hospital only three came out.what happened to the fourth girl Riley Holt?her father conducted a search of the hospital but theres no sign of her.. Detective Maire Miller and Frankie Conway investigates. This is a creepy and chilling read.I still enjoy her crime books better more of my genre..if you enjoy spooky reads you will enjoy her books as a fantastic writer...
This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon uk.
This book was SO. DANG. GOOD. Normally, I don’t read too many supernatural mysteries, but I can’t express enough how this was one of THE best crime/supernatural mystery books I have EVER read! I cannot recommend this book enough!
The plot was unique and it was full of suspense, excitement, and action. It was a relatively fast paced book AND it was creepy as hell (which I love).
Many different characters were introduced throughout the book and I had no idea what place they held in the story, but in the end their connections all tied together and the pieces fit perfectly. All of the characters (minus the demons LOL) were very likable and their character development was great. I was not bored with too much detail but there was plenty to get an idea of who each character is and how they got where they are. I especially love how Marilyn Monroe was incorporated as one of the main characters from the past (Faye Miller).
I just think it was a very unique book that kept me guessing through its entirety!
Thank you Netgalley and Storm Publishing for the advanced readers copy of this book. I really, really enjoyed it and will be reading more from Helen Phifer in the future!
This is the second book in the series and I think it would be beneficial to have read the first one.
Great book. Easy to read though very dark in places.
I would also recommend the first installment - The haunting on West 10th street. This will introduce you to the man characters ad make Her Lost Soul more enjoyable.
Detective Maria Miller is faced with another difficult case. When the daughter of the police chief goes missing, after joining with friends to explore an abandoned mental hospital, Maria and her partner, Frankie, are called in to investigate. As they begin the case, they discover some very disturbing history about the hospital. The discovery of two dead women, neither of whom the missing girl, the mystery deepens. Will Maria be able to solve the case before someone else is murdered, maybe even herself? It is an exciting read.
First of all, thank you so much for the advanced copy of Her Lost Soul by Helen Phifer. An absolute Must read!! I was hooked from the first page and could not stop reading. I loved Maria and Frankie and cannot wait to read their next adventure, I just finished the book and already want more. I love all things spooky and this book did not disappoint.
What better way to start the New Year off than finding a new author. I cant believe I've never read (that I remember) and of Helen Phifer's books or series... but fear not.. I have just downloaded quite a few (don't tell hubby) for me to devour and catch up on!
When this ARC landed in my TBR pole I OBVIOUSLY had to download book #1 The Hauntong on West 10th Street and read that first as I'm a stickler for reading the whole series, not just jumping in at any point and I am so blopdy happy I did.
In book #1 we meet Detective Marie Miller and her partner Detective Frankie Conroy and start to find out their stories alongside the main storyline *mo spoilers*. In book #2, Marie and Frankie now head up the Unexplained Cases Department, dealing with all things strange, unexplainable and downright spooky.
A teenage girl, Riley, the daughter of a police Chief, goes missing whilst checking out an old derelict psychiatric hospital with three of her friends. Something spooks them, they run but somehow Riley gets left behind and can't be found.
Marie and Frankie are tasked with finding the missing girl but will this case test everything they have? Can they push through their fear and face the unknown?
Told in dual timelines of 1960 and Now, each are entirely riveting, engaging and interesting, which makes a change! The past, aetbin 1960 shows the hospital as ot was when fully functioning and the Now shows it as having been abandoned for many years, not only run down but completely derelict.
The characterisation is just spot on, they are relatable, credible and authentic. Their flaws just add to their characters and make them even more readable in my opinion.
I loved the whole sense of unease this book gave, the chilling atmosphere literally made me hold my breathe at points.
The whole story had me turning the pages so fast I'm sure I let off steam. It was amazingly atmospheric, spooky, creepy and massively unputdownable.
In all honesty I have never really been into reading paranormal style stories but my god this just blew me away. I cannot recommend highly enough.
The biggest thanks to netgalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
What a thrilling, original spooky read! I sped through the first Maria Miller book and was excited to have early access to the next instalment. While not as dark and disturbing as the first, this is a strong paranormal crime novel that has so many imaginative and original threads. I read it in a day and couldn't put it down. I needed to know how it all would come together and if successful conclusion. The guest appearance of a known personality was an enjoyable layer. Looking forward to the next one.
I had the chance of reading this arc, thanks to the publishers and Netgalley.
I started this book in the last couple of days of December but completed it in January, and let me say it started my 2024 with a bang! Helen Phifer definitely knows how to not only write thrills but also chills.
Her Lost Soul is the second book in a series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone. I didn't read the first book, unfortunately, but that didn't alter the experience I was able to be immersed in from start to finish.
Her Lost Soul follows duo timelines past and present and does have minor POV interchanges. Jam packed with mystery, vanishings, spirits, a glimpse of old Hollywood, and creepiness that is sure to hook any spooky thriller junky!
The story follows two police detectives that come in from the big Apple to help small town PD with a case of a weird disappearance that happens in an abandoned old Mental Hospital; which happens to be home to a few ghosts.
I honestly didn't want to ever put this down. Then when I finished it, time went from 9 pm to 1:30 am so quickly. I lay there in my bed, and I was terrified. The spooky atmosphere of this brilliant read had me thinking the tower scene was going to happen in my bedroom and I swore I could see a shadow creepily sneaking down my wall and was going to snatch me by my ankles.
Following the story, I did guess a couple of plot things, but it didn't take away from the book. I definitely recommend and will hopefully get to read the next book!
Helen Phifer is one of my goto authors. I have been following and reading her books for several years now. Her Lost soul, the second in the Detective Maria Miller series and another fantastic read.
When 4 friends decide to break into the old abandoned haunted psychiatric hospital on Beacon Hill and check out the spooky goings on before the hospital is torn down. Only 3 come out. Riley Holt 17-year-old daughter of the local Police chief seemed to have disappeared into thin air.
Detective Maria Miller and Partner Frankie and called in to investigate. They sense evil in the air and inside the hospital and they hope to find Riley before it is too late.
This is another very entertaining read from the author with the blend of paranormal and police procedural. It had my attention throughout. It has great characters and I like the blend of the story of the past and the present and how the hospital came to be. It had some tense moments that made hold my breath especially the ending when they went into the hospital to find Riley and I thought is this the end of Detective Maria Miller.? You will have to read it yourself to find out. 5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary ARC of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This is the second book in the Detective Maria Miller series. This could easily be read as a stand alone book but the first book was really good and definitely worth a read. This series reminds me the shows I used to watch, like Charmed, Ghost Whisperer, Haven and other similar shows. I loved those shows and it was so easy to get sucked into the storylines, this book is the same. I love the characters, Missy and Emilia are such great supporting characters!
Riley and her friends decide to check out the old Asylum before it is torn down, but something goes wrong and Riley goes missing, they don’t think anyone will believe what they felt or what they saw. Maria and her partner Frankie, are called in to the scene. Maria quickly feels the evil that is lurking in the old building. Maria and her team try to find Riley and bring her back before it’s too late.
This was a quick read but what a great way to spend a stormy day. Cannot wait for the next book in this series.
3.5⭐A gripping, dark, horror story suited for a younger audience.
Maria and Frankie are detectives who examine the slightly strange.
A run-down, derelict mental asylum that a group of teenagers break into, potential spooky goings on, demons, and the disappearance of one of the teenagers. The story goes between past and present and is creepy and chilling.
A decent read, with good characters, and a well-paced and well-written story, with some plot holes, but good for fans of ghost and paranormal stories. I’m not the target audience, at least regarding paranormal books.
Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for the eARC.
This book tells the story of 4 friends. One of them is trapped in a place full of mysteries and legends. Throughout the various chapters there is a bit of mystery. From the middle to the end of the book I almost couldn't stop reading!
