I’m a runner and love having something motivational to listen to about health matters and this really did that. Loved how it was broken into achievable portions of content and it made me rethink a few things. Great book to come back to realign how you’re running and your goals.
It was good and inspiring! It did not rock my world, however.
This being said, I am glad that there's a book about just running rather than athlete-level running though. I'd give it 2.5 stars, rounded up.
I enjoyed the audio narration of ALL YOU NEED IS RHYTHM AND GRIT by Cory Wharton-Malcolm. As a runner that's stop-started my running journey a number of times, it was useful to hear Cory's experience and how he got into running, but more importantly how he got over the barriers that were holding him back. The idea of running with others, and when to start running with others, and how to build your own sense of determination was useful. Such as the tips about running without music was something I hadn't thought of before. Some of the training tips would be more useful in a written format, but I guess the PDF that comes with the book will contain these.
An enjoyable read for those starting to run, and the audio format was perfect to listen to while pounding the pavement/treadmill – a real boost!
I'd definitely recommend this for anyone looking to run, beginners or more experienced. As someone with a chronic illness who has attempted couch to 5K twice and never got beyond week 4, I think this was the book I needed to listen to and rare for me, I'd happily listen to again to fully embrace the motivation it provides!
A wonderful, inspiring, informative read. Listening to this has truly changed my outlook on running and given me motivation to carry on with my running journey.
**Listened to the audio book**
I was super excited to get started with this book - and it definitely didn't disappoint!
There was so much information, and not just 'common-sense' info, that I'm finding a lot of other books on similar topics seem to have. There were genuine lots of new stuff I learnt. Loads of tips, tricks and suggestions to help you enjoy and get more from exercise.
I liked the balance between the personal story of Cory Wharton Malcolm, and then more factual and informative details.
I loved that the book was narrated by the author - Wharton-Malcolm has such a positive energy that this book just wouldn't have been the same if he wasn't narrating, or if I had read this instead of the audiobook.
I feel like I will go back to this book when I need some motivation. I just wish it was longer - was left wanting more.
I found this book at the perfect time! I am training for a 10km and found the advice super useful and I can't wait to use some of the tips on my next run. It's great for runners at different stages of their journey with super useful tips on exercises and stretches, and even examples of tempo runs to try.
Listening to Cory talk about his own personal experience, especially as a black man was enlightening and I hope he writes another running book soon!
This audiobook is wonderful, not just as the introduction to running that it is publicised as, but also as an inspiration to runners of all ages, abilities and intentions!
I have come to this book as a seasoned runner who needs a bit of motivation to shake things up, and this book has proved to meet the brief perfectly!
The author, Cory, proves that he is not just an inspiring running coach, but also a talented narrator whose dulcet tones are a pleasure to listen to!
I thoroughly enjoyed both the story/autobiographical feel of this book, as well as the sections relating to kit, training plans, injury prevention, strength training, racing and the likes. That this audiobook comes with a pdf is an added bonus!
All in all a great listen, and one that is sure to be a hit in 2024!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
I love a book about running and this one is really thoughtful and offers a different vantage point on how race and body size can factor in to joyful running environments and belonging or not. I found it really refreshing to hear recommendations that are genuinely staggered but also take you from a jog to the end of the road to running multiple marathons. Niche but it really hit for me that Coach Corey has been running in the recreation ground I learned to walk in. He talks about not being seen in running spaces and it hit me that few of the running books I've read before (including the ones he mentions) are about people and places like the ones I know and love.
This book handles the weight loss and diet side of books like this about as carefully as you might hope. Corey is really clear that you don't need to be any particular shape or size to be a runner and you don't need to run for the purpose of losing weight. That said, there is definitely content that idealises certain ways of being and running, which may not be for everyone. The balance of how he got here to running tips is also well-handled but I can imagine that there maybe too much story to running advice for some. I listened on audio via NetGalley and would definitely consider getting a hardcopy when it comes out.
