After watching the Netflix show I quickly became obsessed with the story of these murders. This audiobook was great, so easy to follow and riveting. What a book!
This was a very informative listen. I liked how the audiobook gave you a clear history of the family and how things got to the events. The narrator was clear and neutral which I think you need in a book of this nature. I was interested to see how “the other half” operate as when you have money you clearly have more sway!
Absolutely hooked from the beginning. Excellent narrator. Context and detail far exceeded a documentary I watched about this story. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the advanced listener copy
It's a fascinating and shocking insight into a true crime, but I really disliked the narrator. He sounds way to cheerful and upbeat, given the nature of the book.
Great for fans of true crime but read it, don't listen to it.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very well-researched dive into the tangled Vines of the Murdaugh Family Murders.
I believe, this would’ve held my attention a bit better, had it been told in a story format rather than just researched facts but that’s probably just me.
Would recommend for true crime readers!
Holy smokes. These are dreadful people. All of them, including Paul (probably especially Paul) are unbelievable, they really do take the cake when it comes to bad behaviour, entitlement, and absolute lack of class and decency.
On a number of occasions I thought I'd throw in the towel. I kept thinking it can't get any worse, and then it did. So much worse. And the hunting and killing was truly sickening, they seemed to live for it. It is also very, very long. But I stuck it out, and while the narration was good (a bit dry now and then) I do think it could have flowed a bit better.
But all in all, a shocker. What people don't get up to, and worse - much worse - what other people allow them to get away with, is awful. If you'd told me all the things the Murdaughs got away with over the years, I'd have thought you were exaggerating. But nope, it's all true. As they say, you really can't make this stuff up.
This is a very informative audio around what happened with this family and why we the story is quite confusing. My only complaint with this audio is I couldn’t get on with the narrator but that’s my personal opinion.
It truly is awful what you can get away with when you come from money.
I went into this one a bit blind in terms of I haven’t heard of this family before and knew nothing about them or what they had done. I found that the story was very slow to begin with as the information provided dated back so far, I didn’t really find this information relevant to the actual story that I was expecting. Despite this I did find it interesting learning about all of the awful things that happened and how the police acted towards the crimes that were committed.
A must read for the viewers of the Netflix true crime series on the Murdaugh Murders.
This gave such in depth and fascinating insight into the family, going waaaaay back and working to the present day. If you didn't think the story of this family and its privilege and abuse of power could get any more toxic then read this book.
The perfect read for true crime fans.
This was like listening to your favourite true crime podcast 🕵🏼♀️
Like potentially everyone I watched the Netflix Programme & was fascinated by the corruption, brutality and greed of the people involved with this case. This story gives you fascinating depth into the level of greed involved in the financial crimes involved with this case, in an accessible and balanced way. John Glatt puts you right amongst the swamps & small towns of South Carolina. I did however, find the reading of this on the audiobook rather monotone, so although my enjoyment of the actual telling of events wasn't impeded, it was harder to listen to.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the audio version of this fantastic book.
True Confession: I live in coastal South Carolina, not too far from where these events occurred. This has been thoroughly covered daily by my local TV news and social media. I watched the documentaries and the trial. I thought I knew everything about this case. I was wrong. Tangled Vines: Power, Privilege and the Murdaugh Family Murders has so much more information. I didn’t know how early Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers became involved after the boat crash, how Paul became PawPaw, how the family looked away from their children’s heavy drinking and I didn’t know that the 911 operator sent the police and EMTs to the wrong location, wasting more than a half hour. Tangled Vines: Power, Privilege and the Murdaugh Family Murders is a must listen for anyone fascinated by this case. It is written by John Glatt and read by Shaun Grindell, a lively reader with a delightful English accent. I loved hearing his pronunciation of words I’ve only heard said in a low country drawl. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bonnier UK Audio and John Platt for this audiobook.
I was interested in this audiobook mainly because I had already listened to a podcast about the Murdaugh family and watched a to show. So the audiobook gave a wider view of the clan and a history of them and their lives. Interesting but I think only if you know of the scandal already.
After watching many documentaries on this subject i was very excited to receive this audio. . This is more about the history of the family and helps gives a greater understanding of the family and the true magnitude of all the crimes not just the ones the media tends to focus on.. It did feel it got to the reall exciting part and then was over too quickly. A fairly short high quality listen that left me wanting to hear more. It was informative but not over the top . There was a lot about family history and not as much on the murders as ivwoukd have liked. I'd recommend this to anyone who like to delve into the background of this complex family.
Thank you netgallery publisher and author and narrator for this 4 star lusten
