This is a book I needed to read in the daylight and not on my own, so what I really did was read it in bed, late at night and scared myself silly. This is such a sharp, well thought out scary but believable read. It shows how things play on your mind, taking over your life especially if you try to keep everything all to yourself. It also shows how relatively easy it is to make people believe stuff when they feel even a little bit guilty about something they have or haven’t done. Excellent read, highly recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you to netgalley, penguin house UK and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled to find the latest Andrea Mara on my NetGalley shelf. Having read her previous works, I was once again gripped from the first paragraph to the last paragraph. Andrea has meticulously plotted out every single plot point, with no questions left unanswered.

I get excited when I hear that Andrea Mara has a new book out. Having read all her previous works, I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed her books. This book lives up to the standard of her previous books. Gripped from the first paragraph to the last paragraph. As usual, Andrea has meticulously plotted out every single plot point, with no questions left unanswered.
The book opens with Anya relaxing in her bath, 30 seconds later Anya is killed by a masked figure in her own home. Julia is a childhood friend of Anya's, she has just moved back to Dublin from America to a luxury exclusive gated housing estate. The newest social media trend of where people film themselves creepily descending from an attic is gaining traction. It all gets too real when they see a video of a masked figure creeping around their own home...
Unsurprisingly this book delivered the usual high standard from Andrea Mara. Contains all the ingredients for the perfect thriller in the right proportions. I've read a lot of her books so I had high hopes for this and they were met. I liked how the book portrays South Dublin in all its flairs and fancies. The social media culture and the attic is a terrifying concept, I had to try read it during daylight hours!

Huge thanks to netgalley, Penguin Randomhouse and Transworld for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my goodness, this certainly opens with a bang. As Anya relaxes in the bath with a glass or three of Pinot Grigio, she hears those pesky mice again above her in the attic. Except of course, it’s not mice at all.
Julia, Anya‘s friend of many years, is newly moved back to Ireland from San Diego, and that’s a story in itself. Her teenage daughter Isla urges her to take a look at what’s been posted on TikTok and so she views it. is this a prank or something way more sinister? Why is someone targeting Julia?
This latest from Andrea Mara is super creepy in places as it taps into your worst fears and nightmares. There are one or two occurrences where I literally jump, and the fact that Julie young son Luca is so full of fear, seems to escalate the readers. Julia lives in a wealthy gated community, and this adds to the weirdness as a couple of neighbours raise the suspicion antenna a notch or two. The behaviour of her ex-husband, Gabe is mysterious and this helps build tension further. There are a few good red herrings along the way and multiple plot twists and turns raising the chill factor. The mostly unlikeable characters add an extra dimension to the plot too.
However, much as I do enjoy this, there’s an awful lot going on with several sub storylines including one from the past as well as a San Diego mystery. This detracts from what I really want to know, i.e. that attic! It’s also told as reflections and flashbacks, which in my opinion slows down the pace of the storytelling. I expected an ending with a bit more wallop for what is mostly immersive and very chilling read. It’s all a bit tidy as well in The Epilogue.
Overall, though, I do enjoy this and it’s a very it’s very easy to read.
With thanks to NetGalley, and especially to Penguin Random House UK, Transworld for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgallery and the publisher for this ARC. The publication date is the 6th June.
Someone In The Attic starts with the words: “Three minutes before it happens…” From there on in be prepared to keep turning the pages ‘ til you reach the end this book! It highly addictive I couldn’t get enough of it!
I throughly enjoyed it, the plot had many of twists and turns that kept me captivated and intrigued to find out what would happen next.
Overall, a fantastic book with very well written characters! Andrea Mara does it again with a one-sitting kind of rollercoaster that will have you absolutely captivated from the very first line! 😊
Anya is relaxing in her bath when she hears a noise upstairs. Thirty seconds later, Anya is dead. Across town, Anya’s old school friend Julia is settling in to her new home with her family and watches a disturbing video of a masked man climbing out of an attic. Julia is horrified when she realises that the footage is of her house, located in a gated community. Why would a stranger target Julia? Or is it a stranger at all?
Andrea has done it once again! By far the creepiest of her thrillers (I will never be able to look up into the attic space again!), Someone in the Attic is a one-sitting kind of rollercoaster that will have you absolutely captivated from the very first line.
I’ve read all of Andrea’s books and can categorically state that this is her best book yet. With twists and red herrings to make you doubt everything that you’ve read and what the characters are saying, this story will appeal to thriller readers who like a creepy vibe to their stories. It’s disturbing and one hell of a story (Andrea is the master of giving her readers a story that will mess with your head and raise the blood pressure just a little bit too!). This is going to be a massive hit this summer!
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK for the arc. Someone in the Attic is out on June 6th. Maybe don’t read it in the dead of night though 🫣
There are so many fantastic Irish crime writers out there at the moment and Andrea Mara is riight there with the best of them. This was a great read, it had it all, the hook, the thrills, the plotting and the pace. It also had fantastic characters, three modern women who drew you in and made me feel invested in their lives, so much so, it was hard to put the book down!
Thanks to the publisher for my advance copy. A whip smart read from a writer at the very top of her game.
Disturbing, Compulsive..
When an online video is circulated, Julia is baffled but not immediately unduly concerned, It’s something and nothing - isn’t it? Not real? But, things are soon to take a terrifying turn. With a pacy narrative, a propulsive plot populated with a wholly credible and deftly drawn cast of characters and an unsettling premise which duly delivers, this is an immersive read which is disturbing and compulsive in equal measure,
''I'm not afraid of being alone in the dark, I'm afraid that I'm not alone''
Andrea Mara does it again! This is the third Andrea Mara book that I've read now and every single time I've been completely hooked from page one. She has such a gripping and fast paced writing style with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing the whole time! I absolutely devoured this book.
4.5 stars rounded up!
Devoured this. I just couldn’t work out who was good and who was bad and who was being truthful. As soon as you think oh that’s obvious you realise it’s just a clever alley the writer has took you down. Keeps you guessing to the end. Love this author.
I really liked the first 30% of the book, but unfortunately it stopped working due to an error so I couldn't finish it!
Saying that I really liked what I did read and will purchase a copy once it's available ☺
Anya wants a quiet bath to plot her next relationship move in peace. She can hear noises in the roof but they’re nothing to worry about. Until a masked figure exits the attic, drops down to the floor and less than a minute later, Anya is dead. Her old school friend Julia watches a video of an intruder climbing down from her attic, a house set in a gated community. That is, a house that’s really difficult to get into. She cannot understand who it is or why they’re finding her house so interesting. Could the murder and the masked figure be connected – and if so, how? With this novel, I really think Andrea’s novels have stepped up a notch. It’s chilling in places, with ample red herrings to keep readers on the alert.
Ok, so I should know by now not to start reading an novel by Andrea Mara in the evening time. Why? Because her novels are simply UNPUTDOWNABLE and I always end up reading into the early hours. Sigh, of course, I never learn as I'm always so eager to read her books. And this time around was no different.
"Someone In The Attic" is deliciously creepy and plays on that fear that maybe, just maybe there could be someone watching. With a combination of flashbacks to explain a tragic event of twenty years ago, and frequent references to a shadowy event in the US, it is hard to tell just who is being truthful. And the multiple PoVs, serve to provide the reader with a variety of viewpoints, but with contradicting opinions, it's difficult to know who is being honest and, this adds to the slowly building tension.
Absolutely worth a read, even if I keep glancing at the Attic with suspicion now.
What can I say another great book from this author, it was just brilliant, I was glued to it from beginning to end and I was listening in the night for sounds from my own attic and looking over my shoulder and one thing about it is if the smaller people in your house tell you their is someone in your house believe them and don’t ignore them..this story goes back and forth a bit from present to past but wraps up beautifully at the end and is so so good…
A compelling read. The style of writing irked me a little but none the less I felt this strong urge to continue. There were lots of side threads but everything was tied up neatly at the end.
Once again, Andrea Mara knocks it out of the park!! Her writing is phenomenal, the suspense, the twist, the thinking I've solved it when I haven't a clue!! Excellent story line with smaller story lines interlinked within the book. Will admit it kept me checking my attic hatch!
I enjoyed reading this book. I did work out who the killer was quite early, but then there were enough red herrings to make me doubt myself, and I got caught up in the story and was clueless again until the reveal when I was able to say to myself that I knew all along ! Good book well worth a read.
I love Andrea’s book and was thrilled to be given the chance to read and review. However I wasn’t expecting to be so spooked that I needed to sleep with the light on!
The book starts with an extremely shocking incident in which a stranger, dressed head to toe in black, exits a loft and commits a violent crime.
Julia, who has recently relocated her family back to Ireland from San Diego, becomes aware of an online trend where there’s a person hiding in the attic, who exits and creeps around houses. Lots of copycats of this but the family are perturbed when a video appears on an anonymous account. The house shown is clearly the one they are renting. When the video is taken down, Julia thinks this is the end but more videos are mysteriously posted.
This book had me thinking that everyone in the story was a suspect. This story is multi levelled and very cleverly written with a few red herrings that caught me out. I loved this book - but it will make you look twice at your loft hatch!
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
I’ve read several books by the author and they have all been gripping and compelling reads. Someone in the Attic is no different, it’s a creepy, intense, atmospheric and gripping novel that I read over the course of a few hours.
Julia has moved back to Dublin from the US and plans to catch up with her old school friends Eleanor and Anya. However Anya does not turn up as her body is found in her bath after she heard noises in her attic. Julia’s son then tells her he hears noises in the attic of their new home while her daughter sees TikTok videos that appear to be filmed in their house. The premise alone is so creepy and terrifying and the author has written a genuine page turner full of interesting characters and red herrings. I could not put this novel down and felt that I was holding my breath throughout.
An outstanding and satisfying thriller.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
