WOW! Andrea Mara has done it again! What a book!
From the very first word to the end of the resolution, I was completely invested in this story. The characters were so vivid and real that I honestly felt like I was right there with them. And even though I tried my best to figure things out alongside the characters, I had it very wrong until very close to the end. This is a very well-paced story with the perfect amount of a plausible spooky factor that had me questioning all the noises I heard in my house for a good few nights.
I can see this book being even a bigger hit than NO ONE SAW A THING and that says something. Someone said this is her best work and I wholeheartedly agree - we would need a 6th star to properly rate it.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and, of course, Andrea Mara for the chance to read this ARC in return for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Julia has moved back to Ireland from the States with her two children and her ex husband. She arranges to meet up with her two long standing friends. But one of them doesn’t arrive, and it’s because she’s died. Julia’s young son then keeps saying that someone is living in the attic, but no one can find evidence of anyone living there.
This was another great banger from this author. It was the perfect mix of creepy and atmospheric. There was also sub stories playing out through the book, also upping the chill factor. The characters were all well written, and I really liked Julia. Although, she did come across as naive occasionally, but this was perfect for the story to play out. A great read for psychological thriller fans.
With many thanks to Netgalley for this free arc and I am leaving this unbiased review voluntarily
This had me at the first chapter. I really do like the way Andrea Mara writes, all her books have a wonderful flow to them. Always full of suspense, secrets and red herrings, but boy has she excelled herself with this one. This is super creepy, highly addictive and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author has the dynamic of the characters spot on and I loved the interaction within the story. The tension throughout was palpable and the storyline perfectly plotted. This will definitely make you want to check your loft space! Another winner from Andrea and cements her place as one of my go-to authors.
Someone in the Attic is the second book I’ve read by Andrea Mara, and it’s my favourite so far. It’s very creepy and tense, and had me on edge while reading more than once. It’s a tightly plotted twisty-turny thriller, and I enjoyed every page. As usual, none of my guesses were correct, and I was pleasantly surprised by the ending!
I’ve always found the idea of strangers coming into my house at night (or any time, really) absolutely terrifying, and as luck would have it that’s the premise of this book. Ha! Videos are appearing of masked figures emerging from people’s attics, and the latest shows it happening right in main character Julia’s home. This turn of events sets in motion a thrilling story that unfolds between a group of old friends, with many a red herring thrown in for good measure. When I say I was hooked, I really do mean it!
Andrea Mara’s writing is so easy and accessible to read, with short chapters and a fast-paced plot that allows for absolutely no let-up. I was glued to the pages from start to finish, and I was sad to see it end. It was a great ending though, and not at all what I thought was going to happen (I’m the world’s worst at guessing plot twists, so I wasn’t at all surprised).
If you’re a fan of intelligent, addictive thrillers, Andrea Mara’s books are a must-read. Someone in the Attic is such a good example of the genre, and it’s definitely made Andrea an instant-buy author for me. I’m off to buy her back catalogue now, and no doubt I’m in for a thrilling treat!
I love this authors books and this book definitely has the creep factor and I will never look at my attic in the same way again! The characters are well written and the plot wasn't ridiculous like some thrillers can be! The book does go between past and present which shows you how the events are linked. I would highly recommend this book if your a fan of the authors work and someone who loves thrillers and this is overall a quick read. Thanks to netgalley and random house for this arc
Julia, along with her family, has returned home to Dublin after living in California for some years. To her new neighbours the arrangement of Julia’s family appears “different”. Despite being divorced for nine years, Julia and Gabe get on very well. They share the parenting duties and split the week with a ‘switchover’ with one of them either living in the house with the children or living in an apartment close by. This means the children have minimal upheaval and family life remains grounded. Due to Julia’s earned wealth (lots of it!), she supports the family, the properties and Gabe, who is an artist.
The main property they move into is in a prestigious gated development in a very desirable area. When daughter Isla discovers a bizarre video on TikTok, the family think they are victims of a fake account on the site, as The Loft is a very popular tv series that shows a person in black gaining entrance to homes via the loft and videoing the home they have gained access to. As Julie has moved her family from San Diego in secretive circumstances, she feels that someone back there, perhaps the mysterious Riley, is out to get back at them.
As always Mara delivers an amazing read. Very creepy and certainly makes you think! Well developed and well plotted, the story captivates from the start. Although some unlikely events occur, the feelings of surprise, suspense and suspicion kept me wanting more. Poor Luca, why does no one take him seriously 😱
For me the ending was a little flat. In comparison to all the other books by this author, it’s was just lacking that little something that I’ve come to expect. Nevertheless, an exciting and creepy read that I definitely recommend.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House.
I enjoyed this psychological thriller. Well written and gripping. I thought I had worked it out just over half way through but I was wrong. Dropped a star because of the f bombs.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher Random House for the advance copy to read.
Someone in your attic is a fast paved, chilling mystery that will have you staring at your own attic in fear.
The plot follows Julia and her family upon returning back to Dublin after living in America. There are various sub plots and flashbacks to years gone by.
The book will have you thinking you having it all worked out to realising maybe you don't?
Luca's character really helps to set the creepy atmosphere.
Highly recommend if you love John Marrs and TM Logan.
Jesus this was creepy, honest to god I had the big light on 😂 This author knows how to keep readers guessing. Every chapter left me wanting more, I couldn’t put it down. Dark and twisty, with a plot that will keep you guessing until the end, A true masterpiece of suspense. Thank you!!!
I am a huge fan of Andrea Mara and I was delighted to get the opportunity to read her newest book Someone in the Attic. This was of the most gripping and thrilling books I have read in a long time. I read it over the course of a day as I simply couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read more from the author in the future.
I absolutely love this author so when I seen this I could not wait to read it. It was such a gripping thriller which had me hooked from start to finish could not put it down. The opening chapter had me gasping as it was so terrifying it was such a creepy read with the tense atmosphere building throughout. Fantastic creepy thriller which I will definitely be recommending just read during the day. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy of this excellent thriller.
Andrea Mara is one of my favourite writers and I was so excited to read this. It is dark and creepy and really well written. As always Andrea writes well developed characters and the book is fast paced and thriller. Another gripping read from this brilliant writer.

Brilliant. 5 ⭐
Anya is enjoying a relaxing bath when she hears a noise in the roof. Through the open bathroom door, she sees the attic hatch swing open, and a masked figure drops to the floor. Thirty seconds later, Anya is dead.
Even in a wealthy neighbourhood like this.
Across town, Anya's old school friend, Julia, sees an online video of a masked figure climbing out of an attic. She suddenly realises why the footage is eerily familiar: it was filmed inside her house in a luxury gated community, designed to keep intruders out. Why would a stranger target Julia? Unless of course, it's not a stranger at all.
Loved it. She's getting better with every book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Transworld Publishers Bantam for giving me an advance copy.
I normally love Andrea Mara however this book just didn't work for me. I found many of the characters to be annoying and didn't really feel the story moved along enough
What a read!!!
The opening chapter terrified and captivated me in equal measure and I was hooked. To the point that I had to go and hide in my room ( in daylight because I was too spooked to read this at night)) and read the rest of this in one go. A delightful Sunday, well spent.
,
This had all of the trademarks I have come to expect from Mara's books- intricate plotting, brilliantly paced, unputdownable and impossible to predict but there was also a different vibe to her previous books. As well as the aforementioned components, there was a really compelling back story and brilliantly realistic characters. I was so invested in the story of these friends and of their earlier lives and I really loved how all the different strands came together.
Another brilliantly propulsive read from the Queen of Irish crime fiction. Hugely recommend this one , you'll never look comfortably at your attic door again.
5 star.
This was a very creepy, tense read with a full throttle ending. I thought I had it worked out but it was all the red herrings thrown in. My only issues were the additional stories were unnecessary, I didn't like the way the 'Then' chapters were written and I was shouting at the fact they were all worried but no one listened to Luca.
This was definitely a very creepy read, I was glad I read this during the day as I know I would be too nervous to sleep otherwise.
Someone In The Attic, Andrea Mara
A video surfaces of a man, dropping from your attic, prowling round your home. Across town a man drops from another attack, a woman is dead moments later. Who is creeping about in the dark? Can you trust anyone?
I could not put this down. I was genuinely unsettled and absolutely breathless racing through this creeping thriller. A big fan of No-one Saw A Thing I was really pleased that this retains all the same disturbing thrills. Excellent.
Bloody hell why did I read this on my own staring up at the ceiling!! This was a seriously creepy book, not a horror but a psychological thriller which preyed on my nerves!
I loved the dysfunctional families element, we are most of us living in one of these. I also loved the suburban creepiness, they thought they were in a safe place but someone wanted revenge. Also the Irish setting I always love.
The kids, these bloody poor kids, why do the adults put them through it!
I did love the epilogue, wound everything up nicely.
I've always felt this author writes excellent thrillers but she writes the best for the creep factor too! And this one definitely has creep factor! Honestly I was truly delighted to not have an attic hatch in my house while reading this one!
The story moves along at a decent pace but is very character heavy with flashbacks and a secondary sub-plot based on a whole other continent so you do need your wits about you!
Overall, a creepy thriller that I definitely recommend.
