What a fun and exciting read! As a fan of dragons and adventure this book was such a fun action packed fantasy. The author does an amazing job making such a vivid and exciting world of magic and dragon with such excellent world building.

This is a fun middle grade. Jade Sol's father has been found guilty of treason. She finds out from a guard that he has been taken to the Isle of Dragons to toil in the mines. Jade needs to find the Isle and save her father.
Along the way, she meets some people willing to join her on her quest. She will need them.

This has found family vibes, steampunk, and dragons. What more do you need?

Good book, and an enjoyable world. I thought the magic system could have been explored more thoroughly earlier in the book and the adventure more streamlined. Some characters were introduced and not given enough time and interactions to develop fully, which I hope is solved in the next book. Overall, an interesting world which I think works well for a younger audience.

A very clever and cute story. I love anything with dragons and this didn't disappoint, especially by adding in a loveable trio of characters!

L. A. Thompson's writing in this trilogy opener captivates readers with its magnetic, impassioned, and clever narrative. Fans of Angelique S. Anderson's Dracosinum Tales and Jessica Drake's Dragon Riders of Elantia series will find Thompson's storytelling both familiar and uniquely captivating as they follow Jade's epic journey through a world where steampunk innovation meets the mystique of high fantasy.

I did not really get it... Maybe that was because I was expecting something else, more dragon side, less steampunk.... Since the beggining I had a problem with characters end the way this book is written... Too fast? Too much ? I don't know but that wasn't as good as I'd expected...

I received the ARC in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.

This book had a really good premise, the story of Jade searching for her father was compelling, and that was what piqued my interest when applying for the book.
However, I was disappointed in a number of things. First, there is not enough character development because there is not enough inner dialogue to either character for the reader to really grasp who they are and what they feel, as a result, they all feel two-dimensional and thus, the same throughout the book.
Second, there are a lot of jumps in point of view and event, giving a sense of disorder and making the reader feel dizzy throughout. There were parts where I was not sure who was speaking and where we were. The events moved on too quickly at times, too, which left no time to build tension or set the scene well enough.
Lastly, and perhaps secondary to the previous two issues, there are a number of typos and misspelt words in the book, such as "barley" when intending to say "barely."
Overall, this book can be salvaged. With more editing and changing the organisation of the chapters, this plot could be really effective since all of the bases and the foundations have been laid to build a beautiful heartwarming story and I do hope these issues are solved so I can look forward to enjoying this trilogy.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me access to this ARC and to the publisher

I paused on this book at first due to the image on the cover and I am so glad that I did. It is one of my favorite story types. Dragons and a young girl finding her strength as the story progresses. Jade learns about her strength with the help of her friends she finds along the way. Jade discovers what all she is capable of doing and the truth of what is going on in the kingdom she is fleeing from.
While this is the first story in a trilogy and you are left wanting to learn more about Jade and her friends, you aren't hanging. I can't wait for the next book and see how this adventure continues.

As these three young people work together to find their parents, the imagery dials up several notches to build a visual that matches the cover. The story line contains so much of what draws young readers to a series that it's bound to be a hit with the target audience. As the first book in the series, it has set a high bar for the next book.

1.5 Stars rounded 2

Isle of Dragons is nonsensical in both plot and dialogue, confused as to who it’s following and what it is trying to get across to its reader within the first chapter. The writing is bogged down with action-heavy prose, giving the reader very little else to focus on or imagine outside of character movements and reactions. “The soft echo of clanking and whirring gears began to slow. The machine flickered in and out of sight, the invisibility setting becoming increasingly unreliable. It soon came to a stop with a final sweep of its tail to erase its tracks.” The entirety of the writing is like this – completely impersonal and devoid of any sort of character or voice. It almost reads as though you’re reading a script rather than a novel. Third person omniscient POV can absolutely be done effectively, but this is an extremely tricky writing perspective to write in if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. Oftentimes it ends up feeling extremely impersonal and detached which is exactly what is happening within this book.

Dialogue between the characters doesn’t fare much better. Beyond the fact that many of them speak almost exactly the same, it comes off as a bit forced and bizarre. Again, something about it feels very similar to imagining what you believe spoken dialogue in a movie between characters would be like. It comes off as very juvenile, but not necessarily in a way that conveys two young people talking with one another – it’s obviously the skill of the author rather than something intentional. I see that this book was originally released back in 2020 so, I’m unsure if this ARC went through edits or not. I think either way my opinion won’t change: this book is not ready for publishing in any sense of the word.

Firstly, the cover is really cool. I can imagine a lot of people buying the book solely based on how fun that cover looks. Secondly, anything that has to do with dragons immediately piques my interest so I was very curious about this book. And as soon as I started reading, we come across a mechanical centipede. So cool.

Overall, I liked it. It was a very easy read. The plot was fun, and the world building was well done.

The only reason I removed a star was that at times the dialogue felt a bit abrupt from one person to another. However, I think that's just due to it being a young adult genre. In particular, I think children would really enjoy this book. Thank you for the ARC and I look forward to lots of success for you!

The book has both adventures and growth. I enjoyed the character development of Jade and how she is often thinking of others but is reminded to also take care of herself. She shares her growth and experiences with others as she teaches them magic. The connection between Miria and the dragons is a great mystery that I hope is explained in the next book. I love the description of the different landscapes, magical creatures and the mechanical forms of transportation. This is a great book for a young adult looking for a story adventure and friendship.
