I have such mixed feelings on this one.
The main characters Rory and Nasira were so hot and cold that at times I wondered if they should stay together. The biggest issues between the couple were Nasira being super judgmental, and Rory being stubborn. Because of this they often clashed over assumptions about each other.
There were also moments where there was more telling than showing. In the first half of the story Rory was working hard to lock down a date with Nas, and when it finally happened we found out as it mentioned “on their last date”. The times they spent together without bickering was few and far in between. We were only told about those occasions. Overall I did like the characters except Karen (Nas friend/business partner).
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.
This was a good read. I really enjoyed this read and the dynamics of the book. I love some opposites attract and found romance tropes and this was it!!! Thank you to J.L. Campbell for the ARC of your release!
This gives a good flavour of Jamaica with family relations, the island and the music scene especially. There is a lot of dialogue in the book, mixed between the two different view points. For me this large amount of story told through conversations meant that there wasn’t necessarily the emotional depth of either Rory or Nasira and their relationship didn’t come off the pages and to life. Both characters remained two dimensional and I struggled to invest in them and their happy ever after.
Nasira and Rory met on a flight to Jamaica. His attraction was instant, while hers was kept at bay…UNTIL. But, one things begin to blossom, untimely circumstances started to get in the way. Honestly, I felt that Nasira jumped the gun too many times, which caused a lot of confusion. Thank God for her daughter and business partner, who made her look at the woman in the mirror.
The thing I loved the most about this novel is that it takes place on the island of Jamaica. The food, the drinks, and the scenery took me back to the numerous times I visited my grandparents home. My favorite character will always be Rory. He saw who he wanted and didn't stop until he got her.
