Thank you to HarperCollins UK, Harper Fiction and Netgalley for the advance reader copy of this book for an honest review.
The Midnight Feast follows the opening of The Manor a luxury health and wellbeing resort with no expense spared for the guests staying. However the town itself has a history and old friends and enemies are returning to the manor previously an estate owned by a former local family where the forest is full of secrets.
The Sunday morning of the opening weekend and the police have been called there's been a fire, something is up with the guests and a body has been found.
Lucy Foley knows how to craft an excellent murder mystery and this story is no exception.
Told from multiple perspectives this keeps you guessing at the upcoming twists and turns throughout and just when you think you've figured out one element of the plot there are two more that come through completely unexpected.
I ended up finishing this book within a day of starting it. It definitely got me out of my reading slump.
Quick and fast based with short chapters based on a variety of characters, despite this multiple POV the characters were all easy to follow and the story all wrapped together well answering any and all questions.
Another fantastic Thriller from Lucy Foley and I already can't wait for whatever is next.
I really enjoy Lucy Foley's books, this one wasn't my favourite but I did still very much enjoy it. I quite liked the build up by the switching back and forth with timelines and POV's. Characters were good and I enjoyed the overall storyline. I was glad to have read it.
Fantastic read. My first Lucy Foley, can't wait to read her other books. Hooked from the start and couldn't put it down. A few great twists in there.
Set at the opening weekend of an ultra luxury wellness hotel we are introduced to various main characters and the book progresses through their eyes.
The timeline moves between before, during and after the solstice and you need to take note at the beginning of each section so you know whose POV it is and when it is taking place.
The police are involved when a body is discovered but we do not know who it is until much later. which adds to the suspense. Everyone seems to be hiding something, whether from the present day or from the events of 15 years ago which we learn about through the pages of a teenage summer journal written at the time.
So it is a book full of secrets and grudges, folklore and justice with the added tension of never being quite sure who to trust and who is telling the whole truth, although it is clear who is the main person you should not trust under any circumstances.
This was my first Lucy Foley book and after wanting to read one of her books for a long time, but not getting around to it in the myriad of wonderful books I was so glad when my request to arc read this book was approved.
I went in without any expectations and I loved every minute of it, couldn’t put it down. The multiple POV gave a lot of insight into each of the characters story, but also their personality. And the dual timeline, while a little confusing at first really gave the story more depth and it is executed so well. The plot is interesting, and there are twists and turns throughout. I did start to guess the different reveals in the last part of the book, but it was still highly entertaining.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
With a great plot and secrets aplenty, it’s hard to put this book down. It just sucks you in and you need to find out what’s happening in the present and what happened in the past! Really enjoyed this one, highly recommend. Thank you #netgalley
I love Lucy Foleys previous books so was desperate to read this one and it didn’t disappoint.
As always great characters and lots of twists and turns to keep the book interesting, fast paced and easy to read.
Loved it
Thank you Netgalley, Harper collins audio and Lucy Foley for the audio arc of The Midnight Feast.
Narrated by Roly Botha; Laurence Dobiesz; Joe Eyre; Tuppence Middleton; Sarah Slimani
I have heard in my reading circles that Lucy Foley has written some great books, so I was excited to be accepted for The Midnight Feast.
This book is told from multiple POV in first person. I find books like this very immersive, especially when it's an audiobook.. The narrators Narrated by Roly Botha; Laurence Dobiesz; Joe Eyre; Tuppence Middleton and Sarah Slimani each had character of their own which made them pop right out of the book for me and made each MC distinguishable. All of them have great voices and were well chosen for their characters
The premise of the book is told on 2 timelines, in the past when the MC's were younger and present day, which is set as the celebrations of a new Manor Hotel is being opened, Both timelines are well defined and each memory from the past is clear from which MC. This is great because their backstories build their characters in such a way that it's easy to bond with them, whether you like to dislike them or you suss out whether they are unreliable or not. There is also a nice twist of folklore elements to this narrative and because it wasn't overdone, added a nice creepy atmosphere to the whole story. I enjoyed the whole book, its well paced and balanced with these elements worked very well. Im looking forward to picking up more of her books in the future,
4.5 stars rounded to 5 for Netgalley/Amazon/Waterstones
A real page turner full of the best kind of unlikeable characters, a great setting, a touch of folklore and plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing til the end. I couldn't put it down.
Another great story by Lucy!
Beautiful storytelling, addicting story and full of plots and twist.
This thriller was very cinematic and full of sudden twists, I really enjoyed the characters and the development of the story.
So many unexpected event and Lucy is a master at keeping the tension high! I would totally recommend this book, a great read.
Thanks to the publisher and to the author for my gifted ARC.
Secrets never stay buried, so when Bella receives an ad for the grand opening of The Manor she books a space. So many dark secrets from her past are kept at the manor and she feels she must right a wrong. Upon arriving things seem different but she knows it hasn't really changed.
I enjoyed the fast paced story of how the past can catch up to you. The characters were perfect for the story and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. It was tense, with a bit of superstition thrown in to stir things up. Would recommend and want to thank Netgalley, Harper Collins and Lucy Foley for the chance to read and review this amazing suspenseful read.
Another cracking story from the pen of Lucy Foley. A thriller with a difference lacing the psychological with mystical local folklore. On the Dorsey coast The Manor has just opened its doors. Owned by wealthy Francesca Meadows she has turned a mansion into a modern hotel for the wealthy offering a relaxed vibe with wellness top of the agenda. Her special treat will be the midnight feast to celebrate the Solstice. Told from multiple POV’s we discover what happened in the past, largely in the form of diary entries, and how it is affecting the present. Compelling stuff.
Briefly, as the staff and guests come together for the opening we meet a diverse group of characters, all of whom seem to be hiding secrets and as the celebrations start a body is found. And what do the crows in the woods have to do with it? Is it just folklore or are ‘the birds’ seeking revenge for the past?
This is a group of well fleshed characters with connections between some of them that are so well hidden. The tension is palpable as the author weaves an intricate web of secrets and relationships and there are quite a number of reveals which hit you - bam, bam, bam! A gripping storyline, tense and engrossing this was a superb read.
A gripping and, what I would consider a classic whodunnit with all the twists and turns your pretend detective heart could possibly desire with The Midnight Feast, Lucy Foley’s latest thriller as the rich arrive at an exclusive boutique hotel to celebrate midsummer with a summer solstice feast. Fast paced and told from multiple points of view with a varied cast of characters, both strangers to the area comprising of guests and staff, secrets and agendas abound. Tensions between the locals and the hotel’s owner are about to come to a head. I love this author’s style of writing, her short chapters and the strong pacing to her writing makes for absorbing reading. Her characters are intriguing and if you’re anything like me you’ll be jumping between them, suspecting all of them in turn of being the guilty party. And to add to your reading pleasure, the inclusion of some local folklore combined with the whole solstice thing gives the overall story a suitably eerie atmosphere.
I have really enjoyed previous Lucy Foley books so was thrilled to get the chance to read this one.
The action takes place around The Manor, a lavish retreat created when Francesca Meadows renovated the family home she inherited from her grandparents. As the guests gather to celebrate the grand opening, we follow multiple points of view across two different timelines. It soon becomes clear that many of the guests are not who they appear and that almost everyone not only has a secret to keep, but an ulterior motive for being there. All of this set against an undercurrent of local folklore surrounding The Birds.
The plot moves at pace with twists and turns, clues dropped and hints left until we reach the shocking finale.
Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for providing a digital ARC copy for review.
I enjoyed this read as with all Lucy Foley’s books! Lots of past secrets with a gothic twist. A past Manor House opening as a high class spa retreat uncovers past tension. Great characters and a great story.
.
"The Midnight Feast" by Lucy Foley was an engaging read, featuring a well-paced narrative and a cast of intriguing characters that held my interest until the very end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
A fabulous read from Ms Foley. Atmospheric and nostalgic at the same time this story has a complex and extremely clever plot that is revealed little by little. Great characters and well paced throughout.
I enjoyed this book - it’s pacy and full of interesting characters. It’s the perfect book for a holiday read - the story builds nicely around a couple of days at a posh new spa hotel built on the grounds of a Manor House owned by a very entitled family. Woven into the story is some folklore but overall, it’s a fun read with some sharp observations of the new age wellness business and its pretentious advocates.
Thanks to HarperCollins and the author for my ARC .
I absolutely loved reading this book - my first Lucy Foley book and it won't be the last!
So much tension, so many secrets and very sharp writing, with perfectly writtten 'voices' for each character. Lots of drama from the very first page and the reader is invested in all the characters and their back-strories.
I've been waiting for a while to read a book which makes me fight the tired eyes at night! Highly recommend!
Two timelines, the same people, revenge and hurt. Young free and fun loving, the main characters begin by entering a summer of fun. After a hideous incident, the wheels are set in motion for a shocking revenge story.
Good always conquises evil.
A clever story, with a fitting ending.
