There are many stories about ww2, but here is the story about a brave Jewish woman back then. I always would love to know more about the first hand story from them. The story was presented very well by the narrator!
Thought provoking, moving and highlighting a story from World War 2 which I hadn't been aware of. It's such a relief that this memoir has been published so that more can hear Janina's story about the suffering of the Poles (both Jewish and none) during the terrible events pre and post the War.
I found it fascinating to hear the story of what one brave woman can do. Her bravery was astounding, and it just showed the power of individuals. This isn’t a story I had heard before and it was really inspiring
Wow this deeply disturbing harrowing true story gives a compelling insight inyo an unsung hero and thd teality of war. It told it straight. Graphical with feeling. The narrator did a good job of dealing with a tough subject. It was enjoyable to learn more about someone id knew nothing about. It was shocking heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. It told the plight the horror the hope the despair and the humanity of all. More stories like this need to be told. Thank you so much for this 5 star lisyen. It was intense and humbling. Thanks netgallery and publisher and author and narrator
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish this one. The narrator's voice was so monotonous and difficult to get through.
The Counterfeit Countess: The untold story of the Jewish heroine who defied the Holocaust by Elizabeth White and Joanna Sliwa is a book I really enjoyed reading.
I love the true stories of ordinary people who went above and beyond to help others in their time of need.
I'm so glad NetGalley approved my request to read this book.
I would definitely recommend this.
This is another powerful and important story about how one 'normal' woman ended up doing extraordinary things in a time when death was just around the corner and a story that needs to be told and shared with as many people as possible.
Dr. Josephine Janina Mehlberg, a Jewish mathematician, used a carefully crafted fake identity and an enormous amount of bravery to help save thousands of prisoners in the Majdanek concentration camp all whilst the threat of her identity becoming known hung in the air meaning a likely death sentence.
Written using Dr Mehlberg's memoir, an amazing amount of research and an excellent narrator, The Counterfeit Countess is a story that reads like a film and, in my opinion, needs to made into one so that her story becomes as well known as others such as Schindler's List.
Thank you to the authors, Bonnier UK Audio, John Blake and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of this remarkable woman.
An incredible, amazing, and heartbreaking story about a Jewish lady who did everything she could to survive while simultaneously helping to save thousands, if not more, Jewish, Polish, and other people from the horrifying tragedies of World War II.
It was a bit unfair at the end, after the war had ended, when she and her husband were merely trying to be in the same country. However, at least everything ended well for both of them.
I highly recommend this book to those interested in reading about WWII and the Holocaust.
Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for offering me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is a sad and heart breaking story which although important to be told, is written in somewhat an immature way. I really found it difficult to listen t, not because of the content but, the style of writing and narration. I suggest that if it were to reach a larger and wider audience, it needs an experienced editor to have a look at the text.
A heartbreaking story that tells such an important part of history. Told in a sensitive and beautiful way.
"The Counterfeit Countess" was an interesting read and I enjoyed learning about such an interesting and brave woman who risked her own life to save others.
Majdanek was a concentration camp near Lublin where Josephine Janina Mehlberg used a false identity as Countess Janina Suchodolska and persuaded camp leaders it was in their interests to feed thousands of their prisoners. She provided food, medicines and other items that if found co7ld have led to her death.
This is a wonderful and inspiring listen and read (I listened to the audiobook). The horrors that this lady saw and tried to alleviate were enormous. This brilliant and clear writing has come to us through careful and thorough validation of Janina’s memoir, which came to light after her death. She saved many many people from starvation and helped many escape. We should praise and remember her..
