Favorite Quotes:
Rob’s betrayal had taken more from me than just him, and I didn’t think I’d ever forgive him for that.
I recognised the pattern from my parents’ house, where the tea set was always locked away in a cabinet ‘for best’, as if they were waiting for the Queen to come for tea.
When it came down to it, things didn’t change as much over the decades as we might think. Love– with friends, family or lovers– had always been the glue that held everything together. It was merely the details that changed.
My Review:
My first Clare Swatman experience and I picked an excellent one to start on my path to enlightenment. Her writing style was emotive and thoughtful yet easy to follow with a unique premise and well-nuanced storylines and narratives that pulled me in and held me close.
Beth was forced to start over while navigating a painful divorce, realistic single-parenting problems, and unexpected life lessons. She gradually worked her way towards healing by anonymously helping others as an agony aunt on her newly developed website after finding inspiration from a stash of old letters written and answered some thirty years prior.
I felt every bump of Beth’s journey and reveled in her successes and was well pleased and satisfied by the story’s end. I will most definitely be perusing Ms. Swatman’s listings for similar gems.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely won't be my last!!
This novel consists of 27 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
WOW!!!! What can I say?!?! What an absolutely fantastic book that I fell in love with!!! I cannot wait to read more books by this extremely talented author!
This book is beautifully written with vivid descriptions setting the picture perfectly in the readers mind. The title, description and cover works perfectly with the storyline.
I absolutely love, Love, LOVE this absolutely brilliant book that was a perfect introduction to this author for me. It is such a stunning, emotive and beautiful read that everyone needs to grab a copy today and just get sucked into the lives of Clare, Evelyn and all of the rest of the characters you will meet along the way!!.It is absolutely ram packed with family drama, fresh starts, second chances, fun, friendship, laughter, love and just so much more!! In this gorgeous book we meet the lovely Beth who has had to move out of her family home after her disgraceful husband had an affair and Beth could not afford to purchase it. Beth has bought herself a rundown cottage that she is determined to turn into a beautiful family home for herself, her children Jacob and Olivia. While sorting the cottage out Beth discovers old magazines from the 1950's and becomes invested in the 'Dear Evelyn' problem pages. This gives Beth the idea of becoming an agony aunt herself while she is also determined to find out more about Evelyn. Will Beth be able to find her own happiness while helping others find theirs? Grab your copy of this stunner today to find out yourself!! I absolutely LOVED the fact that each of the chapters begun with a letter to 'Dear Evelyn' along with her solution. I found this an absolutely fantastic and unique idea and I also love that the problem linked into what Beth is going through in that chapter. Clare does an absolutely amazing job tacking many issues women face such as infidelity, work motherhood and life in general and weaves them beautifully in this absolutely superb and unforgettable book! With characters that you'll love and ones you'll love to hate, agony aunt problems and second chances this is a book that will turn a frown upside down! This book really is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I was utterly glued to the pages and I could not bring myself to put it down. I was carrying my kindle around with me every chance that I got as and ended up devouring it in one sitting then being gutted I had finished it so quickly!! A gorgeous uplifting, superb and memorable page turner that will warm your hearts 💝. I am off to add the rest of Clare's previous to my Amazon wish list as soon as I've finished this review and am looking forward to seeing what she comes out with next!!
Clear your schedules as this is one fantastic and unputdownable stunner that will keep you hooked and have you riding an emotional rollercoaster ❤️
I absolutely loved getting to know the characters in this book who were all strong, realistic. I became completely invested in each and every one of them. I completely adored Beth who was having an absolutely awful time thanks to scum bag ex husband Rob who I wont say anymore about as it contains a lot of 4 letter words that Amazon is not a fan of!!! Beth, she is just such a relatable and realistic woman who makes mistakes but owns them, who is not perfect, who has problems and she really is just an amazing protagonist. However, she does her best, she does what she can and she is an amazing Mum working with what she has and making the most of it! Beth's only downfall is that she sadly lives in the pages. This really does not seem the case while you are reading as Clare's emotive and evocative descriptions really brings her and the other characters to life ensuring you can see and feel everything that they are seeing and feeling from their sadness, grief, pain to joy, happiness and love!! I loved watching Beth's interactions with the other characters in the book, especially with her children Olivia and Jacob. Your heart breaks with each of the characters as well as healing with them. The fact that Clare genuinely cares about the characters that she creates absolutely shines through her writing and I loved following their lives with them on every single page!!! Each of the characters had their own unique and memorable personalities, secrets, problems and I loved getting to know most of them. Clare's fantastic writing skills ensured I felt each of the characters love , friendship, pain, heartbreak, happiness, anger, sorrow and so much more and I felt myself laughing along with them as well as shouting out loud at some. Regardless of if I loved them or hated the characters, they each played their parts perfectly and it wouldn't have been as amazing a read as it was if I had loved them all!!! Clare does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story to life and the characters leap out of the pages as your turning them thanks to her evocative writing skills!! Well done Clare!!! A fantastic, memorable group of unique characters that I wont be forgetting anytime soon!
Congratulations Clare on an absolutely gorgeous, emotive and heart-warming read filled with everything you could ever ask for in a page turner!!! I am looking forward to reading more of your future books! I would absolutely love to see this book turned into a movie!!! This is why I would like to welcome you to my favourite author list and here's to your next success 🥂
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first chapter of Clare's 'The World Outside My Window' which promises to be just as gorgeous as this book. It is one I'm definitely looking forward to reading myself!!
Overall an absolutely gorgeous book lovers book that will keep you glued to the pages and warm your heart ❤️!!!

After her marriage breaks up, Science teacher Beth buys a cottage which needs lots of work doing to it. She needs to make a home for her children Jacob (5) and Olivia (7), so has to tackle the bad bits of her new home – and there are plenty – as soon as she can afford it.
While demolishing an old wardrobe, Beth comes across a collection of 1950s magazines which she begins reading, being especially interested in the Agony Aunt column – Dear Evelyn Wright. Reading the letters from those from decades before becomes a comfort, as Beth realises that while many things change over time, the worries people have to deal with remain pretty much the same. Evelyn becomes more important to Beth, but is there a connection with Beth’s new house? Why were the magazines there in the first place?
I got into the novel straight away. It’s written from Beth’s point of view and I was interested in her immediately and sympathetic about her difficult situation. I know just how hard it is being a single parent, starting anew and trying to get on with your ex for the sake of the kids. I was rooting for her from the first page and once the magazines were found, I became intrigued. I love these kinds of old women’s magazines from decades ago.
The characters are all well-described and authentic, even the minor ones. Beth’s mum reminds me of mine – being unduly critical and always saying something you don’t need to hear, which makes you worry more. I loved Beth’s friends Catherine and Charlie, the kids are very believable and there are a couple of cute dogs – always a bonus!
The book has a bit of everything – friendship, new beginnings, motherhood, divorce, romance, mystery and nostalgia. I enjoyed reading about how Beth changed the house and garden too. I could easily see it and approved of the improvements! I also loved finding out Evelyn’s story, which is so beautifully and sensitively written about. Obviously I’m not going to give anything away, but I would strongly recommend you read this book and find out everything for yourself.
Beth moves into an unloved cottage with her two children, Jacob and Olivia, after leaving her marital home. As she begins to renovate the cottage, she finds a box of letters from decades ago, between agony aunt Evelyn and those in need. Beth is intrigued by the letters and finds solace in Evelyn's wisdom and kindness. As Beth uncovers more about Evelyn's story, she realises that everything is not as it seems. A spellbinding and heartwarming story of friendship, love, and being brave enough to be yourself.
I am a huge fan of Clare and her work and have been for a while now. I must confess that I haven't quite caught up with everything that she has written but that is something that I hope to rectify in the not too distant future. I read the synopsis of 'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright' and it certainly sounded like just my cup of tea. I couldn't wait to dive in and so without further ado, I grabbed a cup of tea, grabbed my Kindle and settled down for what proved to be a rather interesting afternoon of reading. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright' but more about that in a bit.
Even before I opened the front cover of the book, I knew that I was in for a treat and that I would struggle to put the book down for any length of time. I can honestly say that there is not one of Clare's books that I haven't enjoyed. By the time I got to the bottom of the first few pages, I knew that I had been spot on with my two predictions. I started reading 'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright' and didn't stop for a good few hours. My Kindle wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I thought that I might miss something if I put the book down or break the spell that the book seemed to have cast over me. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I was so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of 'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright'. I found 'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright' to be an emotional and powerful story about starting over again and creating a new life for yourself.
'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Clare Swatman. Clare has an easy going writing style that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Clare's books felt more like a chat between friends rather than reading a book. I hope that makes sense. Clare clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. In fact I ended up feeling as though several of the characters had become friends of mine rather than characters in a book. I love the way in which Clare makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That's how I felt anyway.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Lost Letters Of Evelyn Wright' and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to others. Clare writes superb fiction with characters that you can't help but take to. I will certainly be reading more of Clare's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
One of the many reasons I’ve grown to really love the author’s books – as well as for her quite wonderful storytelling – is because of their exceptional emotional authenticity. As Kate finds herself alone after the most appalling betrayal, trying to turn the only house she could afford into a home for herself and her two young children – and my goodness, it really needs a lot of work, both inside and out in the overgrown and neglected garden – I could really feel her loneliness and how much she was hurting. But she’s definitely no doormat – she certainly fights her corner when she needs to, as she often does, and I found myself cheering her on every step of the way.
This is one of those times when I really don’t want to tell her story, because the author does it so much better – but when she finds a box of correspondence while tearing out a wardrobe in the children’s bedroom, it gives her an idea to give her new life some purpose. Evelyn, who used to live in the house, was an agony aunt, and the box is full of the letters she received and the advice she gave – and Kate, drawing on the correspondence and her own difficult life experience, comes up with an idea about how she too can make a difference. And, as she moves forward with her fresh start, new relationships, both friendship and the possibility of romance, come her way – but as she steadily gains confidence and we share her happiness, those new relationships disconcertingly begin to ebb and flow, and her future once more is touched with uncertainty.
Her own emotional journey is underpinned by a mystery – about Evelyn’s life, and why she disappeared – and that becomes an immensely moving and engaging story, with a few real surprises along the way. The characterisation throughout is quite superb – while Kate herself firmly had a place in my heart from the very beginning, and I loved her relationship with her children, the other people whose lives she becomes entangled with are equally beautiful drawn, entirely real, with their own engaging stories. And I must say that I entirely loved the book’s construction – each chapter prefaced by one of Evelyn’s letters and the advice she gave in return, so cleverly linked to each part of Kate’s story. The romantic content is just so perfectly judged – and there’s a really nice balance between the book’s lighter moments (and there are plenty) and those that break your heart.
So, a slightly shorter review than usual, and a little light on the detail – but I really want everyone to read and enjoy this lovely book as much as I did, without me spoiling it in any way. But I promise it won’t disappoint in any way – this will, without question, be one of my books of the year, and I’d urge everyone to add it to their upcoming reading list. Original, engaging, emotional, uplifting, and filled with warmth – I really loved it.
2.5⭐️
As the story begins, we meet Beth, a newly divorced schoolteacher and mother of two, as she moves into an old cottage with her two children after her husband buys out her share of their family home. A fixer-upper in need of a lot of repairs, Beth has her hands full what with her children’s unhappiness, the unpleasantness between herself and her ex-husband and the lack of much of a support system in terms of friends or family. When she discovers a bundle of decades-old letters addressed to an “agony aunt” column (addressed to “Evelyn Wright") in an old magazine addressed”, she finds the process of reading about other’s problems (some similar to her very own ) cathartic and her curiosity about the real Evelyn Wright motivated her to not only attempt to find out more about the person but also start a blog/advice column of her own. We follow Beth as she discovers more about Evelyn, makes new friends, and gradually rebuilds her life.
I really loved the premise of The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright by Clare Swatman. I loved the idea of finding old letters and how a character could be motivated to deal with her own troubles based on advice meant for other people (though Beth acknowledges some of the advice wouldn’t quite apply in today’s world, she was able to understand the wisdom behind the advice and relate to the same). I was sympathetic to Beth’s situation and hated her ex-husband (it's difficult not to) and could understand Beth’s resentment and pain. Unfortunately, I found little else to enjoy in this novel. The pacing is on the slower side an the narrative suffers from repetitiveness. The search for Evelyn and her story was an interesting plot point but as the story unfolded several aspects of the plot felt contrived (more telling than showing) and the convenient coincidences soon took the joy out of the story. Beth’s immaturity in dealing with her husband was off-putting but I would have been willing to ignore this if she had exercised better judgment in her personal life and made less questionable choices. The new relationship angle was poorly plotted, distasteful and cringe-worthy. I did like the characterization of Beth’s daughter and thought that the author was able to portray the seven-year-old’s confusion and her reaction to the situation between her parents realistically.
Overall, I can’t say that this was a satisfying read but please do read other reviews as many readers have enjoyed this novel more than I did.
Many thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the digital review copy. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I loved this book so much I was deeply invested Beth and her heartwarming story, I was really hoping that she would find happiness after the betrayal. I think this book beautifully illustrates the path to acceptance and self love after marriage breakdown. I think Beth is so relatable and her character development and relationship with her family and friends old and new was wonderful
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I hadn't read the author before but I loved the title and premise, so I grabbed the opportunity to be on the blog tour.
This was a perfect read to cosy up on the sofa with. I loved how our protaganist Beth was struggling to regain control of her life after leaving her cheating husband. Beth was real, she was frustrated and upset, and I felt so much sympathy for her situation, and how she supported and worried over her children adjusting to their parents' new situation.
My favourite aspect was, of course, the Dear Evelyn letters she uncovered while decorating her new house. These letters were then placed at the start of each chapter, and I loved how they related to what Beth was experiencing at that point in the story.
A great read, and I look forward to more from this author.
TRIGGER WARNING: Divorce, estranged friends and family, difficult family relationships, moving on and rebuilding life.
Clare Swatman is an author whose writing I love. A Love to Last a Lifetime and The World Outside My Window were excellent, and ever since those I’ve been waiting for her next book.
The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright had me captivated by its synopsis and title. I immediately wanted to know Evelyn Wright. I find Agony Aunt columns fascinating because of what we learn about people, and the plot was original. I loved the way Beth put her ideas into action to become the new Evelyn Wright and continue her legacy.
I identified with Beth as her feelings were so raw.
I do not have experience of divorce, but I do with estrangement of family and friends and difficult family relationshiops.
As with the Clare Swatman books I have reviewed so far, the word choice was perfect, the visuals were spot on and I was enjoying accompanying Beth and the characters.
I really felt like I was living life with them, and Beth especially.
The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright was immersive and gripping as well as heartfelt.
Thanks to Clare Swatman, Boldwood Books and Rachel’s Random Resources for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
5 stars
Do you ever read a book and feel like gushing about it....
I feel I could tell you all day long how much I enjoyed The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright. Right from the very start I loved Clare's main character Beth. Having split up from her husband Rob who was having an affair and who then proceeded to move his new girlfriend in to the family home, I took to her immediately. I felt sorry for her and so wanted things to work out for her and for her to be happy.
What a terrible thing to do to someone, most especially the mother of your children, I really didn't like him because of it.
Lucky for Beth his new girlfriend was a nice person.
In her new home, Beth is overwhelmed at the amount of work that needs to be done to it.
With the help of some new friends, she sets about trying to make it a home for her children.
One day while clearing out part of the house, she stumbles upon some letters. She soon discovers that the previous owner was some sort of agony aunt who helped many people with her letters and replies.
Feeling this might be something she could do and not wanting to succumb to boredom and loneliness, Beth decides to create a website and become an agony aunt herself.
I really loved the avenue the author went down with this story. The website, the emails, the answers to the letters, all of it helped Beth to overcome her fear of being alone and the breakdown of her marriage leaving aside the fact that she made new friends along the way, Catherine, Charlie....
Evelyn helped her in so many ways.
I loved it, loved the whole premise to the story.
I felt sorry for Beth, sad in places but when hope was needed I really felt lift off the pages.
Author Clare Swatman created the most magical story...
I would love a follow up to this one where we would get to see Evelyn's story first hand...
Absolutely worth your time by the bucket load, I love love loved it ❤️
If you’re looking for a gentle, hopeful book about second chances and starting over, then The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright is the book for you! I loved it!
They say that it’s often easier to give advice to others, regardless of the state of your own life, and that’s definitely the case where Beth is concerned.
She’s just come through a messy divorce, and has to considerably downsize and adapt to a lifestyle that’s very different to the one she had while she was married to her ex, Rob. Unfortunately, so do her children Olivia and Jacob. While dealing with her own feelings of anger, sadness and anxiety might be bad enough, she also needs to handle theirs. It’s not easy.
What makes it even worse is feeling that she’s very much on her own, having been abandoned by people whom she considered her friends. She realizes that once you leave your marriage behind, the friends you had while you were married, tend to stay behind too. This comes as an unexpected, disappointing shock.
And then, while she’s clearing out her new house, preparing for her children to arrive, she discovers a box of old letters that appear to be correspondence sent to an agony aunt by the name of Evelyn Wright. Although the dates indicate that they’re from decades ago, the responses show that she was kind, empathetic, and objective. Somehow the letters give Beth comfort. Advice doesn’t age or date, even though times have changed drastically since the days when these letters were sent, and slowly an idea begins to blossom as to how Beth can turn her life around.
I adored the characters in this book. Beth doesn’t always get everything right, and she knows that – but she owns her mistakes because she knows that’s the only way she’ll be able to move forward. She genuinely cares about the people who start writing to her for advice, quite rightly realizing that so many people out there, not just her, desperately need someone to confide in, someone to advise them, and sometimes, just a shoulder to cry on.
The author deals with many current issues sensitively and they’re woven into the story subtly and suitably: divorce, infidelity, loneliness and sexuality. I found it to be an absorbing, heartfelt read and can highly recommend it.
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This emotional romance follows a recently single mother of two Beth, who has moved into a new cottage and although it needs some work is looking towards a new start.
With friends and family not around to support her she is feeling lonely. Suddenly when renovating she finds a bunch of letters written by Evelyn Wright to do with solving others’ problems.
Beth is intrigued, but following her advice and starting to provide answers to others gains her a feel of starting to have the life and friends she was looking for.
Who is Evelyn Wright? What will these letters bring to Beth’s life?
This romance is an emotional read, not only as Beth is a newly single mother with the anger and hurt still to work through, but with the letters themselves.
I loved the way that each chapter started with one of Evelyn's letters. It is a lovely way to introduce the chapters and bring Evelyn more into the storyline.
I felt for Beth, as I have been in a similar situation, wondering what life was going to bring and starting afresh, it is nice to see how she is strong and doesn’t let it completely hold her back.
Overall, an emotional romance where a discover of some old letters, turns a single mother’s life around.
I really like this book for bringing out all the feels. I got the happy and the gooey as well as the anger, despair and hatred. I haven't been in the scenarios that any of the characters found themselves in but it was written really well and I definitely felt all the emotions alongside the characters.
I like the start of each chapter bringing us to an issue written about and answered by 'Evelyn' in the 50's and how they relate to what Beth went through in the chapter itself. Not having read too much of the blurb, when the very first letter in the first chapter was so badly answered, it made me pause to think how good the book would be. As soon as I realised it was set in the 50's, it all made sense.
I enjoyed the cast of characters, especially the steady friendship between Beth and Catherine. I would definitely read another Clare Swatman too.
Thanks to Netgalley and the author and publisher for a temporary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Overall an enjoyable book even if the main character irritated me at times!
Can finding a box full of old letters from. agony aunt Evelyn not only had changed the life of the people that wrote them so many years ago but the life of Beth, newly divorced and starting over with her two children in a modest cottage, and a group of new friend she will make while she find herself again. Clare Swatman always provides great stories.
Beth is starting over after a divorce. She’s redoing a cottage while adjusting to her new life. While renovating one of the rooms she finds some letters.
It’s a nice story about relationships and starting over. New friends and new romance.
It’s weird, and fascinating, how a well written book can sometimes help you understand some situations better than real life. I have friends who have separated from their spouses and have joint custody arrangements, but I hadn’t appreciated how hard they must find the days away from their children before stepping in Beth’s shoes. I couldn’t help but root for her and was so happy when she started picking up the pieces of her life., all thanks to some old agony aunt letters found while renovating her new home. Wow, that took me back to ‘the olden days’ of browsing magazines that would have the inevitable advice column!
All storylines are so nicely weaved together, and every chapter begins with one of the letters found and the respective answer. This is a nice touch, and a clever one too, since the issues expressed in these letters turn out to be relevant for the dilemmas faced by the characters. Plus, some of these letters are also there to introduce THE plot twist. Oh, I didn’t see that coming, but I clearly loved it! I adored this book, and I keep thinking about it way after having reached the final full stop.
This is such a lovely and charming read, a book for women, a book of friendship, love and courage. This is one of those books you pick up and read in one sitting as it just reels you in and gets straight to the heart.
I enjoyed the wonderful characters, Beth and her children, the cottage and of course the box full of letters. Love the Agony Aunt and advise theme of the letters and the story. It makes it more real and even more fun. It is a story with emotion, sensitivity, tenderness and new beginnings.
A great read, a well written book, a book that will make you smile and also make you think. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was the first book that I’ve read by Clare Swatman but it won’t be the last.
It’s the story of a woman beginning again after divorce. The premise of the long lost letters and the search for the agony aunt was lovely, but I also loved the frustrations she had with her ex-husband – very relatable. I was annoyed with him on her behalf.
Some of the letters to agony aunt Evelyn are included at the beginning of each chapter, along with Evelyn’s answers. I loved this touch; it made the book a bit different.
Definitely a 5 star read.
