Excellent - I enjoyed this from start to finish. Reading about the main character's healing journey, as well as the letters which helped her on that journey, was really interesting, as was finding out what happened to the letter writer. Loved the setting (and the dog!). With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book that centres around newly divorced Beth. Beth moves into a cottage in a village after she splits up with husband Rob after he has an affair with Natalie. They share custody of their two children, Olivia and Jake, but Beth is still feeling very raw. Feeling very lonely and whilst she starts to decorate the cottage, that needs a lot of work!, Beth comes across some agony aunt letters. I don’t want to give too much away but I loved how the letters at the start of each chapter were linked to the storyline. I couldn’t wait to find out what the ending was going to be and loved all the characters and thought they were all very believable. This is such a lovely read about friendship, the ups and downs of relationships and also has some romance. Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review
The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright by Clare Swatman is a character driven story about starting over, finding yourself and the relationships you make along the way.
Beth has recently separated from her husband and the father of her two children, Olivia and Jacob. Unable to buy him out of the family home on her teaching salary, she is forced to move out and into a small cottage which is badly in need of some TLC, not unlike Beth herself. Starting over in a small town where she knows no one is hard, and spending time alone while the children are with their father is not making it any easier. Beth throws herself into renovating the children's bedroom so that at least they will feel comfortable and at home, and in the process finds a box filled with old magazines and cuttings featuring an agony aunt column from the 1950s, Dear Evelyn. Beth is captivated by the clippings and is surprised to find that while some of the advice is very outdated, other problems and answers feel incredibly relevant to modern life and her own circumstances. She is inspired to create a Dear Evelyn website and soon finds herself doling out advice while slowly making friends in her new community and coming to terms with the end of her marriage and what her new idea of family will be.
This is a slow paced character driven story and a very gentle and comforting read. It is incredibly easy to empathise with Beth as a character and as I reader I was very invested in her story and seeing how she was able to move on from a very difficult situation. It was refreshing to read about a grown woman who was struggling to make new connections and friendships while at the same time trying to ensure that her children were happy and okay, even if that sometimes meant not being with them. There was a maturity about the book that I really enjoyed and that I am sure many other readers will also find appealing.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own..
Beth is a recently divorced mother of two. Her ex husband had an affair with their daughters teacher and he’s kept the house. Her children prefer staying with their father and at a loss, she’s inspired to start an agony aunt website helping people with their problems. This is a very wholesome and quick read and it held my interest through. Good if you’re looking for an easy read!
I was a bit disappointed in The Last Letters of Evelyn Wright. I was hoping for more, but the story was flat.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity.
I was so excited to read this book and it certainly did not disappoint! I loved the characters, their relationships and their back stories. I'd love to sit and share an evening with them.
I have always loved advice columns. As a retired Social Worker and Pastor, I continued to be fascinated in the problems and possible solutions. I think that Clare Swatman has done an excellent job of showing how these columns can help not only those who submit questions but others who are in similar situations. Unfortunately I was not drawn into this story. I did not feel very close to any of the characters so I was not so interested in their story.
The author uses a lot of panels of the genre, but, sadly they remain that: only panels. I felt the story only skims the surface.
I felt some of the heroine's reactions false, like a forty-something divorced woman with two children gets the hots when sees a middle-aged male without his T-shirt on. Oh, come on.
The problem might well be that the book did not meet my expectations. So other readers might really enjoy it.
A comfy light read — which you will quickly fly through reading.
This story follows Beth a recent divorcee who is trying to navigate life with her new circumstances -- juggling a move, her children`s feelings and her ex as well as trying to forge a new life for herself— in which she is helped by the letters she finds in her new cottage house written by advice columnist Evelyn Wright. Reminiscent of the book Dear Mrs. Bird— topics covered in the book include to name a few — divorce, infidelity, abandonment and sexuality. I enjoyed the characters and the many facets of their personalities, emotions and ways of dealing with their situations and how each person deals with things differently— though I did not agree with how everything was handled or all the advice given in the column letters— though as a divorcee myself I could relate to the main characters emotional reactions— it takes a long time to recover from divorce and the emotional cost is often misunderstood.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC. I am looking forward to discovering more works by this author. This is my honest review.
3.5 rounded down.
It’s a fresh start for Beth in a somewhat dilapidated and ramshackle cottage following her divorce from Rob, once he admits to his affair with Natalie. She sets about making the house less depressing and more homely for visits by their children, Olivia and Jacob, following the couples bitter custody battle. During the mass clear up, Beth unearths a box of letters which are years old between agony aunt Evelyn Wright and those in need of sound advice. She reads the letters and the sage responses and thus starts a whole new chapter in Beth’s life.
This is a nice story which is a quick and easy read, with writing that flows and though it follows a predicable path, sometimes that’s ok which is absolutely the case here. It’s a story of friendship and making fresh starts, of coming to terms with the past and laying it to rest. The new friendships that Beth develops are with lovely characters who are so easy to like and one comes with a very good backstory which I enjoy following through to its conclusion. I quite enjoy the agony aunt angle though find this less interesting than watching Beth change and how the friendships go through various stages.
As for Beth, she is understandably angry with her ex Rob who is infuriating but at times Beth is too! The issues they have centre on the children and this is done very well. Ultimately, Beth demonstrates tenacity to get on with her life, I grow to admire her and I find myself rooting for her to find the happiness she too deserves.
Overall, this is a well written and engaging novel with topical issues.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Boldwood Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright by Clare Swatman is a book about relationships and change.Beth and her children Jacob and Olivia left her cheating husband and comfortable home for a fixer upper cottage. While fixing her home Beth finds letters from Aunt Evelyn that change her life.Aunt Evelyn is an agony aunt or advice columnist from 1950 who wrote her column for a magazine.Beth finds answers for herself in some of the columns and decides to use modern technology to be her own Aunt Evelyn and help others. She deals with her children and ex husband and his partner and some new people in her life.I found some of the relationships very surface and not so realistic.I enjoyed the British feel of the writing .Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for allowing me to read this ARC.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
I love these readings that leave your heart warm, the kind that you have to start all over again, but you end up doing it with love, hope and friendship.
I really liked the characters, and the themes that this reading deals with.
It is easy to empathize with the protagonist of the book, and I really like how she faces all the challenges that are put in front of her.
This kind of readings are the ones that make you aware that it is never too late to start over, to realize how strong you are, (even if sometimes you feel that you are not) and how the environment around you is very important.
This book is so wonderful that you will read it without even realizing it.
It was my first contact with the author and I really liked her writing, so I can't wait to read more books by Clare Swatman.
Everything about this book was okay but there is nothing that sets it apart from every other book out there. I might borrow it from the library but I wouldn’t spend my money on it
I had such high hopes for this book based on ad’s that kept popping up on my socials. Sadly, I found the writing style to be very odd. It made it almost impossible for me to connect with the characters and I was so distracted by the writing, I could hardly finish the book. I wanted to love this so much, but it just was not for me.
The lost letters of Evelyn Wright is a lovely comforting read of a book that will stay with you long after you have read it!
Huge life changing events such as divorce, infidelity, abandonment and sexuality are all incorporated into the book and provide a very realistic take that many could relate to, particularly those of us of a certain age!
Starting again after a divorce is never easy but Beth realises she is stronger than she thought and demonstrates resilience, strength of character and tenacity as she renovates her cottage for her and the children, makes new friends, starts dating again and becomes fulfilled once more!
Acquiring friends, new skills and making peace with her lot makes for such an uplifting read, I loved the characters especially the lovely Charlie and all that he added to the book!
Thank you NetGalley for this early read.
'The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright' by Clare Swatman is a beautifully crafted tale of love, loss, and discovery. Beth, a recent divorcee, stumbles upon lost letters hidden in her new home and it leads her on an unexpected path. The book is so much more than just a romance novel; it's a wholesome tale about second chances, and the power of love and friendships.
Swatman's writing is beautiful; you can almost feel the emotion in each line. The characters are well-developed and the story quite engaging.
Overall, 'The Lost Letters of Evelyn Wright' is a book worrh a read and one that I would definitely recommend, especially if you enjoy heartwarming stories about love, friendship and self-discovery.
3.5 stars rounded to a 4.
A kind and sensitive story about lovely people dealing with some very difficult issues.
An emotional book full of family and friendship. I enjoyed reading it so much.. A real page turner.
So good! When Beth is remodeling her post divorce home she comes across advice column letters. Deciding to create her own column she uses these as a guideline to give updated advice for today’s times. This gives her a sense of self worth as well as helping others and creating bonds along the way. I lived all the characters and her growth from being a bitter divorcée to an accepting coparent. The friendships and relationships that developed along the way helped her make her new life away from the only one she’s known. Great read! Thank you to NetGalley for this free advanced copy. I’m leaving this review voluntarily
This book was good however, my only gripe is the beginning those inserts of letters I didn't know what the heck it was I feel like something should of been made clear what was what. there was no distinguishing them clearly. Once I got through and realized what was what I really liked the book , I could relate with the main character about raising two kids and feeling alone after a divorce and having to start over. She truly realized she had nothing but I truly loved her growth
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publishers for this arc.
Beth had her world turned upside down when she found out her husband was having an affair and wanted a divorce. Rob bought her out of her house and she had to go to another area to be able to afford a house for her and her children. While trying to fix the house she discovered a box of magazines that had advise columns. She decided to start a blog giving advice & taking her own advice adopted a dog and walking the dog she discovered and met new friends along the way.
I received ARC from NetGalley and I really enjoyed this book.
Another great novel from Clare Swatman. It was a very heartfelt story about getting back on your feet after a marriage breakup. I absolutely loved all the characters within it especially Beth and Charlie. It is a book I will be recommending to friends
