The story is based off a true dog called Molly who had a tragic car accident and her long journey of recovery - but please note that the accident & medical proceedings (not on page of course!) are described/shown. I read this story and I have to say I couldn't quite work out the audience this was intended for. I think it was too traumatising to read to a child, too childish to read to a young person, and adults probably wouldn't like the pacing. I wouldn't give this to a child, I really wouldn't.
As an adult, knowing this is based on little Molly's real story was heartwarming and seeing her recover is lovely, but I really don't know if a kid's illustrated book is the best place for this story to be told! You do see pictures and hear a bit more about her real story at the end of the book as well which was a nice touch. My concern is very much the audience, not the story itself!
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, which I leave voluntarily.
A beautifully written and illustrated story of love, resilience, and family bonds. It makes me so happy that Molly is okay and that her family found a way to include her during her healing to keep her spirits up.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Molly Goes For a Walk is a true story of a 6 month old black labrador puppy called Molly who's enjoying playing with her older brothers when a terrible accident happens. She is rushed to the vets and has surgery but must lay still in her crate to allow her bones to heal. Her mum gets her a pink stroller so she can still go out on walks with her brothers, and we experience all Molly sees and experiences throughout her experiences and walk.
I can't imagine what it must have been like for Mollys father and mother during and after her accident as well as poor little Molly herself. It was so lovely to see real photos of her and the vetenary team who helped her at the end of the book, and the illustrations are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing such a lovely story of hope with us all.
Heartwarming! Its a true story about dog named Molly. Im so touching when read it. How cute this dog. At the end of this pages, the author tell the story about Molly with a real pictures. Should read this book!
Who doesn’t love a story with a dog. IM JUST SO THANKFUL THE STORY WITH A DOG EMDED HAPPY! Loved how it was based off true events as well because it teaches children that sometimes bad things do happen.
Molly Goes for a Walk is a sweet children’s book featuring Molly the pup. Molly goes through something traumatic, and we see how the adversity is shown.
This is a wonderful book to show children how we can pick ourselves up again with the hope of dreams, support of loved ones, and the love of nature.
While moments of the book seem a bit graphic for a younger audience, this book is sweet and at times emotional. What makes it powerful, is that this book is a true “tail” and children can learn about a real animal who went through a big ordeal. It gives the puppy’s story at the end with real pictures.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
This is a really cute children’s book about a puppy who gets hit by a car and who while in recovery talks to a lot of other animals in the farm and gets looked after and pushing a pram. I think this is really cute but also it’s not really something I will recommend very often to younger generations.
If there is ever a picture book about dogs, I'm sure to pick it up to see if it's a good fit for a friend, family, or my classroom library. I was so pleased to see the ARC for Claire Mahoney's "Molly Goes for a Walk." The story is a heartfelt retelling of the real-life Molly's tragic pelvic injury and her road to recovery. This picture book provides children with a pathway to understanding how some dogs may be different than others and can help them understand what happens if their own pet is injured. As someone with a disabled dog, I found this book to be so comforting and heartfelt. This is 100% a 5 star read, and I cannot wait to purchase a copy to gift my nephew for his upcoming birthday.
Going into this book, the only thing I knew was that it was a children’s book. I’m quite surprised by how enjoyable the story was and how emotional it left me. It had me hooked from the beginning and the illustrations were adorable. I absolutely loved Molly and was quite surprised to read this was based on a true story.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with access to read this book!
A wonderful book celebrating the joy and love pet animals can provide to a home and within a community.
Molly is young, excitable and full of fun. Just finding her paws in her home with her siblings. A beautiful dog exploring and pushing boundaries in and around the house.
Based on a true life experience, the story set in Australia is about an unfortunate accident when Molly is run over and has to have a mad dash to the vets.
The best aspects of these traumatic events are related with a measure of fun and engage the reader; wishing all will be well. Beautifully illustrated throughout the treatment and rehabilitation are told with a joy and wonderment through the puppy’s eyes as she is enabled to continue her walking routine albeit from the comfort of a pushchair.
A positive story that demonstrates the love and care needed to own a dog and the love and affection that is reciprocated within a pet-centred home and community.
Molly Goes for a walk is a wonderful story to share with your kids when they are feeling down because of an inevitable event, or more specifically, a physical injury. It is only when you aren't able to use a body part that you realise how much it meant to you...how much joy was made possible in your life because of it.
Molly faces the same issues, watching her siblings and friends and neighbours move on while she is recovering from an accident.
Admittedly, even as adults it is natural to feel like you are losing out, so this book is a good reminder that nothing lasts forever, and you can easily get through the horrors if you have your people around you.
I was excited to read this book about a Labrador. I didn’t not expect the way the puppy got injured. However, I love how the author told the steps of a puppy getting healed after an injury. Accidents happen and this book would be a great story to read to a family with an injured dog.
The colorful illustrations and poignant story of Molly, a black lab puppy injured by a car, tugged at my heart. There is also joy, as neighbors and their animals wish Molly well. A sweet hopeful story!
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC.
Opinions are mine.
This book is based on a true story about a dog who was hurt and had a long recovery. I liked learning about the real dog and seeing her photograph at the end of the book. I was disappointed by the illustrations which seemed old fashioned. It was difficult to really get into the story because the illustrations seemed so odd to me. Children who say they want to be a veterinarian when they grow up would probably enjoy this story.
Molly Goes for a Walk is a kids book. I was curious what it was about so I read a review copy. Not sure what I was expecting but after a brief intro to Molly and her two dog siblings, the story quickly turns to her accident. One of her guardians accidentally runs her over and of course they rush her to the vets. Molly stays in the vet hospital for 5 days. She’s on struck bed rest when she’s home. Her guardians can tell she’s a bit depressed so they buy her a stroller. They go for a walk which she loved. Everyone wished her get well.
The book is beautifully illustrated. It’s a cute little story that glosses over things (no gory details). I might recommend it to a family with small kids who are going through a similar experience.

This book was a very cute book about a dog named, Molly. Molly gets injured unexpectedly in the story. I do wish there was more background information on Molly before the accident happens. It seemed to happen suddenly. This is the perfect book for a child that has had this happen to their dog. It discusses how the dog has to visit the vet and have surgery. It is a very wholesome story with beautiful illustrations. I also like how the artist made the accident scene in black and white.
