This book was adorable. The art style was very fun and colorful and super informative and educational. As an insect enthusiast child, I would have absolutely devoured this. In fact, I probably would have read it until the pages were falling out.
Loved this beautiful book with so much information. I have this irrational fear of bugs but this book made me realize how important they are. My child and I had a wonderful time reading it.
5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the lovely ARC.
This book is sure to interest a big lover with all facts and beautiful illustrations. It is a non-fiction book, and has good facts about the world of bugs.
Through delightful prose and poetry, accompanied by gorgeous art, Luna the Ladybug introduced young readers to the magical world of insects in The Secret Life of Bugs by Moira Butterfield & Vivian Mineker. Interspersed throughout are 5 myths from around the world featuring different bugs, along with nifty insect trivia.
(Add surprise mantis clip)
First up are ladybugs, of course! I had no idea they created pupae (though I'm not sure why I'm surprised). Bug habitats, bug anatomy and adaptations, night-time insects, bug builders, swimmers, sound makers, the biggest and smallest of the insect world, and those that are particularly gruesome (such as mantises) are all covered. My cubs and I enjoyed reading this! Our favourite folktale was the one from Brasil, where the beetle gets it's shiny carapace in a race of the fastest, similar to the hare and tortoise fable.
Highly recommended for classroom learning or as the perfect gift for a budding entomologist!

The Secret Life of Bugs by Moira Butterfield is a delightful exploration of the insect world, perfectly designed to captivate young readers and foster a love for nature. Guided by Luna the ladybug, this book offers an engaging blend of vivid illustrations and fascinating facts about bugs.
The book excels in its visual presentation, with illustrations that are both colorful and intricately detailed. Each page bursts with life, inviting children to delve into the diverse world of insects. From the tiniest beetles to the grandest goliath beetles, the artwork brings these creatures to life in a way that is both educational and visually stunning.
One of the book’s standout features is its ability to combine educational content with enchanting storytelling. The integration of folklore and legends from around the world adds a magical layer to the scientific information, making learning about bugs a fun and immersive experience. This approach not only informs but also entertains, making the book a great read for curious minds.
The Secret Life of Bugs is not just about facts; it also emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation. It highlights the challenges insects face due to pollution and climate change, encouraging readers to appreciate and protect these vital creatures.
Overall, Moira Butterfield’s book is a charming and educational read that will delight both children and adults. Its beautiful illustrations, engaging stories, and important messages make it a valuable addition to any young reader's collection. Whether used in a classroom setting or as a bedtime read, it’s a book that will inspire a lasting fascination with the insect world.
Beautiful illustrations and informative reading! It can be hard sometimes to find books on bugs or animals that are as fun to read as they are pretty to look at! Already purchased!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Loved this book about bugs perfect for curious kids.
We loved reading this together as a family. My Four almost five-year-old asked to read it multiple times. I would definitely recommend this for young readers.
Such a beautifully put together book! I absolutely loved the illustration, so bright and colourful . What a fun way to learn about bugs. Would definitely recommend, thanks for the opportunity to read!
Another very strong entry to this Secret Life of… series. It's certainly suitably vividly coloured and generally impactful enough for a primary school library. This is all about the insects around us – not just the true bugs, but anything we might vaguely call a bug. In a set of themed spreads we see the biggest, the smallest, the underwater ones, what makes them an insect in the first place, and why they are so important for us to be looking after. There are spreads on nocturnal ones, and a gallery of the noisy kind – if you knew exactly what it was that a cicada makes its noise with, more power to you. Insect fans and educators will be grateful for the easy information our ladybird guide gives us here – it makes a subject some people can find off-putting and gives us a wonderful junior reference to it. And it throws in some of the world's fables to make it even more likeable. As close to five stars as makes no difference.
I absolutely loved this! The art style was so colorful and beautiful. This was super educational and informational too, but in such a fun way. Definitely a great read!
This was such a cute book. All of the information was presented in such a fun way too. My 3 year old loved reading it with me & learning along with Luna about so many interesting bugs, habitats, etc. We’ll be reading the other books in the series.
Very inclusive and will appeal to many schools and preschools as well as parents. Insects is a thee that fascinates children, so many will be delighted with this book and following Luna through the pages to learn all the details of the lives of various bugs.
We work with a lot of Montessori, so the illustrative style where Luna and the bugs are given human like qualities will likely limit it's sale into these educational centres.
I like the fact that this is part of a series and many children and parents like to collect, They will make a fab edition to any home library.
I think I enjoyed reading this as much as my daughter did!
Cute little illustrations, and great little chunk sized information that we found easy to understand.
Great book .
Educational, entertaining, and with beautiful illustrations. This is a great book, highly recommended!
Great collection of stories and facts. Perfect for keeping kids entertained as they learn. Gotta love all the bugs found inside!
What an interesting book! My son and I enjoyed reading along with Luna the Ladybug.
This book is entertaining and provides great information related to life cycles and the life of a bug. I enjoyed being able to read this in small “bites” to my son and discussing the various stages and types of bugs. He was intrigued. I think this book would be a great book to utilize in a science class and a bedtime story.
Thank you #NetGalley and #Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to preview this book in exchange for a review. All opinions and thoughts are those of my own. #TheSecretLifeofBugs #NetGalley
A nice book about the lifecycle of bugs. There are a few things that I think were lacking and a few things they could have done better. The stories of the lifecycles could often seem disjointed, and it was a shame that sometimes the text didn’t match up with the correct stage. The text font I was also quite disappointed in, and took away from the lovely images.
Such a fun book to read! It is perfect for preschoolers. It is full of interesting facts, folklore from around the world, colorful illustrations, and a few fun crafts. It gets a little preachy at the end but was enjoyable to read.
