This wasn't as useful as I was hoping it would be. Whilst some of it was interesting, I didn't really find the help that I was looking for.
I always knew that good sleep is essential to a healthy body and mind so I was keen to read this in the hope that my changing sleep patterns can be addressed before they become a problem.
Whilst the book has some fantastic information, I found it did not quite tackle the issue of aging and the inability to go back to sleep when waking during the night. I am certain that it will be a useful reference to many in their attempt to get a more restful night’s sleep.
I was drawn to this book by the title. Overall I found it an interesting read with some interesting ideas with regards to sleep. I did feel that far too much of the book was taken over with recipes and the author enforcing the 800 calories a day diet. If I had of wanted a diet / recipe book I would have bought one.
The title of this leads you to believe its gonna be the plan for better sleep. The reality is the majority of the book is describing the writers own experiences and various sleep studies and recipes. This is interesting but as it is marketed as a self help book very misleading. The actual plan is less than 10 pages long. It does give help insights but apart from the srp its just a rehash of everthing ive read elsewhete pulled togethet.
I would recommended this to anyone who wants to learn bout the science of sleep problems but be sware thd plan section is a ver small part of this book.
This is helpful as a chronic insomnia sufferer it did give me a couple of new insights and ideas but not tgd plan I was hoping for. Very disappointed.
3 stara. Thanks to netgallery and publisher and author
A very interesting book to read. Lots of hints, tips and anecdotes. Clearly written and very well explained. Can't wait to try out what have learned.
Michael Mosley has done it again. If you have problems with sleeping you really MUST read 4 weeks to better sleep!!
After 14 years with a circadian rhythm about 5 hrs out of sync with the world, I am finally sleeping well AND at a more 'normal' time (whatever normal is)
Michael explains his points clearly, often in his trademark light way while backing everything up with scientific research. I initially picked the book up expecting the usual drival about bedroom set-up, routines, etc. So wasnt expecting much. I WAS WRONG there is a lot more to it than that and most of it is simple to act on, if only someone had told me this stuff years'ago!!
There's a chapter on how to improve sleep efficiency too (important, but I'll leave the book to explain) I won't lie, that was tough but oh so worth it!! Finally my body clock is more in sync with my friends and family! And i'm happier too.
Definitely a must read if you have trouble sleeping
Really interesting to learn about how sleep studies became and a look into how they work.
Maybe I’ve read too much though as the information given is no different to other places to find anything out. Ear better, relaxing environment, waking up and going to sleep at the same time…
It was nice that it was written to check in daily and read another paragraph and to try a new thing, see if it was for you.
The recipes were a nice touch too. Some sounded very yummy, though I never tried any.
I must start by saying I was not a great fan of Michael Mosley! I haven't read any of his books, but have found him in the past (reading his articles and seeing him on tv) to be a bit condescending... However, recently a friend of mine was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic and turned it around by following the advice of Michael's books. As I am someone who has struggled with my sleep at various times through my life including somnabulism (particularly at times of stress) I thought I'd give the book a try with an open mind.
I am delighted I did as it is an excellent book. Having read numerous books on this subject, attended courses etc, I was aware of some of the advice, but it is great to refresh on such issues as it is very easy to slip back into bad habits. But some of the suggestions were completely new to me which was great.
Michael writes extremely extremely well, it was not at all patronising, it is a combination of his own experiences, sleep studies and research and practical advice. It is great as you can read the book cover to cover (as I did) or just jump to the section which applies to you (which is particularly useful when using as a refresher).
Despite my initial preconceptions, I highly recommend this book to both those new to having sleep problems and those who, like me, have ongoing issues.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a big fan of Michael Mosley and his Mediterranean diet. This book gives lots of interesting information on how food and exercise can influence sleep with lots of research to back it up.
I'm trying the techniques in the hope that I get better sleep routines.
I'm sure it works for some and not others.
This book is based partly on the author's own experience of sleep issues, and therefore I was looking forward to a manual offering some very practical suggestions on sleep hygiene, and how to ensure that one gets a better night's sleep.
Mosley does offer some interesting insights on our sleep issues as a society (some of which may not be entirely new to many of his readers), as well as a few of the key causes that lie behind our challenges in this regard. He also shares some interesting experience that he has had as a result of taking part in sleep experiments.
I am not sure how well the suggestions will work, until they have been implemented and analysed. So that part I cannot vouch for in this book review. But I do think that the book provides a good starting point in terms of assessing and identifying some the challenges that many individuals face in developing better sleep habits, and it's worth checking out for that reason alone.
