I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great cookbook. The recipes were easy to execute and delicious!
This is a well designed cookbook. I absolutely love that every recipe includes common allergen warnings and most recipes are accompanied with a photo of corresponding the dish.
While I have not had a chance to make many of the recipes just yet, I am confident (just based on what I know about cooking vegan cuisine myself as well as the few that I have tried) that some of these recipes are likely to become frequent go-tos in my house. I look forward to diving into this cookbook more and trying these recipes!
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Vegan Diet for Beginners : Delicious Recipes and Practical Advice for Living a Plant-Based Lifestyle. This is a guidebook for anyone wanting to try a vegan diet. It is full of essential information, tips and tricks. There are a selection of recipes but I wouldn't purchase the book just for the recipes. It is a good starting point for anyone wanting to know more and give t a try. Nicely structured and laid out, so easy to read.
I eat a mainly vegetarian diet so I am looking for vegan recipes to add to my meals easily without having much experience of vegan cooking.
Many people are thinking about ways to eat healthier while at the same time being kinder to the planet and its creatures. The best thing about this book is that one of the authors is vegan for heath reasons, and the other because of her desire not to exploit animals. The first chapters are full of well written, down to earth advice which bolsters their argument about the benefits of veganism while not being condescending. They discuss reasons to move to a plant-based diet and bust the myths about veganism (for example, that you can’t get enough protein without meat and dairy products). I think many people would find the list of animal products “hidden” in food and other products revealing. For example, many wines are processed using isinglass, a clarifying agent made with fish byproducts. This complicates the journey of going vegan, as you can’t always know what animal products have been used in your food.
Our son is vegan (for animal exploitation reasons) and so we have incorporated a lot of vegan dishes into our diet. The good news (as the authors point out) is that there are many excellent vegan substitutes for animal and dairy products available in many grocery stores and from online sources, so nobody needs to learn how to make their own tempeh or avoid putting cheese on a sandwich if they don’t want to. The bad news is, unless you are quitting animal food cold turkey (see what I did there?), you are likely to accumulate a bunch of ingredients that you use once or twice in small quantities and then waste the rest. This is my main beef (see, I did it again!) with this book. While the recipes included look delicious, many of them contain a lot of ingredients that most carnivores don’t have on hand. Since it is titled “Vegan Diet for Beginners,” it might seem more user-friendly for skeptics if there were more simple, busy-day recipes that could be put together with a few common ingredients, like the spaghetti squash dish on page 107.
I have my own feelings about converting everyone to plant based diets - with the number of people we need to feed on this earth, we are already seeing the exploitation of the land as we continue to exploit animals. The next step, I believe, is to make people more aware of their choices. This book does very well at that.
Many thanks to Quarto and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A basic introduction to vegan eating with an emphasis on no oil, no sugar, and health. There is a useful glossary of common animal-based ingredients included. Recipes emphasize vegetables and include notes about whether they contain gluten, soy, sugar, or salt as written. Could be useful for anyone looking to add more veggie forward recipes to their diet. The no-oil idea, which is not in every recipe, may be off putting or unappealing to some but most could have oils added (add oil to a sauté pan, for example).
Was thrilled to get this book as I am Just researching becoming vegetarian then vegan. I found the book very helpful, well laid out and easy to read and understand. I’m really looking forward to trying some of the recipes. A great resource for the beginner. Will definitely purchase this book on its release date.
This book offered a lot of information for those seeking a vegan lifestyle. It explained food elements in great detail. However, I wish the author would have included more recipes. Particularly, recipes someone newly transitioning to a vegan lifestyle would eat. There are very few recipes I would actually try. Thank you Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.
Interesting short book. Lots of info and ideas. Interesting recipes. Nice photos.
Not sure I’ll make any of the recipes, but they looked better than expected as I’m not a vegan.
This would be a great introduction to vegan cooking for anyone who is thinking about going plant-based. I have been a vegan for 3 years now, and find myself making meals similar to the ones listed in this cookbook. I think my favorite part of this cookbook is the introduction chapters. I absolutely love that the authors included information about processed foods and what goes into how our food is made, dispelling food myths around plant-based eating, as well as steps to start off. I think it’s beneficial to have included vegan kitchen staples too! I do wish there were more photographs to go with some of the recipes. The photographs really show how delicious these recipes look!
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for a e-copy of this cookbook!
