It was 1871 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and Loretta Chambers had been alone with her father since she was six years old. Her mother had been Italian and she and Lorrie's father had loved each other dearly. But her family would have nothing to do with him as they blamed him for taking their daughter away from them. When Italian Matteo Falcone arrived at the family boatyard office one day, with a gift for Lorrie from her great-grandmother who had recently passed, Lorrie's dad was furious. He would never speak of Lorrie's mum, and refused to have Matteo in the place.
With the constant harassment from the sly, rough partner of the business irritating Lorrie, she was determined to keep the yard going. The railway was taking more of their trade, and the struggle to make ends meet; to pay the wages of the men, kept Lorrie on edge. But danger was ahead of them, and tragedy wasn't far behind. What would the strong, determined and loyal Lorrie do?
The Dock Girl's Shame is the 2nd in the Waterfront Women series by Aussie author AnneMarie Brear and I thoroughly enjoyed it. With plenty of mystery and intrigue, along with angst and duty, I felt for Lorrie - hers was a well-crafted character. Highly recommended.
With thanks to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Another great read by Annemarie Brear, this is the 2nd instalment of this series of books and just loved it. It’s the story of Lorrie and her father Ernest who run a boat yard in Wakefield in 1871. The book is so well written and has great characters and just a tad emotional in places.
My thanks as always to NetGalley and to Boldwood Books for the great early read.
Another great read from Annemarie Brears, the dock girls shame is a fascinating reward and looking forward to more ⭐️
The Waterfront Women #2
Wakefield, Yorkshire 1871. Loretta Chambers has spent her life at her father's boatyard down at the docks. She's tried hard to keep the business afloat, but with the railways taking trade away every day, Lorrie fears the worst. The arrival of handsome Italian, Matteo Falcone brings a brief glimmer of hope and yearning inside Lorrie for another life, away from the filthy grime of the dockside. But despite her feelings for Matteo, she could never travel to Italy with him and leave her father alone. But one reckless, impetuous moment leaves Lorrie with a secret she will struggle to hide.
Having not read the first book in this series, The Waterfront Lass, I didn't know what to expect in this second book. This historical fiction story is set around Yorkshire in 1871. The characters are well-developed, and I really liked Lorrie and her grit and determination to keep her father's business afloat as the railways were coming into fruition. This is a well-written story that can be read as a standalone.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks and the author #AnnemarieBrear for my ARC of #TheDockGirlsShame in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
The story kept me hooked from beginning to end, I found it very emotional.
The story gave you an insight about boatyards, and the issues those that worked there faced.
I recommend this book.
I enjoyed reading this book as it was very emotional. The story kept me interested from beginning to end . I learnt a lot about boatyards and how they were run. I would love to read more books by this author.
I have read quite a few books by this author and this did not disappoint.
Lorrie lives with her father in a flat where their business is building/ repairing boats. A dashing gentleman sweeps her off her feet briefly. However not is all as it seems.
Their is issues with the business and an annoying silent partner.
An emotional read thankyou for the advanced copy.
I don’t know what title I’d give this book, but not The Dock Girl’s Shame. Lorrie is the daughter of a shipwright with his own yard, not a docker and I don’t see she had anything to be ashamed of, even by the standards of the day. She chose to risk her heart and tried to have some happiness in her life, despite her father’s horrible investor. I’m glad she found happiness in the end. Jonas deserves her.

Such a heartfelt read , I could feel the emotions & tribulations of Loretta which is a testament to the skill of the authors writing . I've read other books by her and she really is a master of this genre.
I couldn't put this book down. It was so good. Emotional in some places I hope the author does some more of these 5****
This book had me on my toes the whole time. I could not put it down! The writing was beautiful. And my emotions were all over the place and I loved it!
We enter the workings of Chambers Boat Builders where owner Ernest oversees the men building and repairing boats but it is his only daughter Lorrie (Loretta) who sees to the ordering/invoicing and paying the men. Things become difficult when they are struggling to pay bills. Ernest rather unwisely allows Oswald Lynch to buy a part share in the business. Oswald thinks rather too much of himself and could cause problems for the Chambers. He thinks he’s a good catch for Lorrie and pride is hurt when she refuses his advances. Will he seek revenge?
One day a distant relative (Matteo Falcone)on Lorrie’s mother’s family turns up with a gift from her recently deceased great grandmother. Just as Matteo arrives there is an accident in the yard and Ernest is badly injured. It’s thanks to Matteo’s cool head and taking charge that helps save a bad situation from being worse. Lorrie can feel herself getting attached to Matteo, is this wise as he plans on returning home!
Is there someone on the sidelines for her!
Loved it. Could picture the scenes of the boatyard and the bombastic Oswald who I liked least along with Saunders.
It was lovely to have Meg in the book. Only sorry it finished.
Firstly thank you Netgalley for this ARC
What an emotional rollercoaster of a story

I devoured this book in one sitting, was immersed in the setting and loved all the characters , was an emotional roller coaster of a read, was sad when it ended n I'll think of the characters for days to come.
