I am quite new to Sarah’s books but have enjoyed the ones I have read before. Therefore I was excited to be accepted for this one.
Lily is a medical school college dropout and aspiring artist. As her parents aren’t enamoured of her plan to uproot her life, she is currently sleeping on the floor of a holiday let she is employed to clean.
Cecelia is awaiting her appearance at her lavish 75th birthday party - a party she met other wanted not requested. When she decides at the last minute that she is too old to be commanded to attend, she gets in her car and drives to a long forgotten family bolt hole on the coast. Long forgotten as it holds horrible memories for her of the last time she was there. She also believed her lately dead husband had sold the property, when in fact he hadn’t.
What links Lily and Cecelia together and what will happen when they encounter each other again?
I love the way this book unfolded and how the characters all had individual tales of their own to tell. Sarah writes amazing characters that you root for when reading.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I always look forward to reading a book by Sarah Morgan who just seems to get better and better . Beautifully set in Cape Cod, a place I don't know, made me want to visit and sit quietly in the dunes eating a lobster roll. As usual the characters are dealing with all sorts of personal issues and secrets but Sarah deals with everything so sensitively with a great character development. A gloriously joyous heartwarming book to take on holiday or even snuggle up with in winter whilst wistfully dreaming of summer.
Cecilia is coming to terms with the death of her husband, while in her family there are other things falling apart.
The story of loss, of betrayal and ultimately of love.
A story that hit home with me.
Really good story
Lovely lovely book. The scenes of the beach and the Cape were amazing and I could feel the sea breeze tickle my cheek and smell it too. It was a gorgeously descriptive book. The grief through this book was palpable and the journey the characters went on was so gentle and inspiring.
I just loved this book. It would be a perfect beach read or snuggled up in winter feeling wistful about the summer.
The characters I particularly enjoyed were Lily, Cecelia and Todd.
Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was a lovely read. There was so much love and support wrapped up in Todd and Cecilia. Lily was really feeling the pressure and was getting more and more unhappy and felt no one understood her and then she and Cecilia find themselves sharing a cottage and Lily discovers a like minded friend who sees her for who she is.
It was really interesting seeing the past unfold for Cecilia and how her life could have been. She chose to support Cameron and live in his shadow. Seeing the family dynamics unfold and new bonds formed was very touching. Todd and Lily were beautiful together, two beautiful souls intertwined, so perfect for each other.
A very easy read that I found hard to put down. I want to stay in that cottage on the edge of the shore away from people.
The Summer Swap
What a lovely book to read. A heart warming story coming from three different women, of three different generations.
Lily finds herself running from her parents, practically homeless because she’s becoming the person she wants to be, not what her parents expect of her. When she lands straight in what should be the firing line of Cecelia, whose kind hearted and selfless nature has not only done her late husband wonders but Lily too. She has her own problems after being widowed but manages to find light in her life again. Whilst her daughter Kristen faces her own battles with her marriage and realising that the distance she created between her and her mother was all because her mother was protecting her.
I was fully expecting a summer romance after a swap of jobs or cities to live in but this story is so much more. It shows how a place full of good and bad memories for one person, can be the start of something amazing for someone else. And that’s exactly what Dune cottage was for Cecilia, a place she thought she’d never love again. Until she met Lily who could give nothing but love for the place.
All three characters are relatable, and the point of view they’re written from is easy to read. It makes for a medium paced summer read and I wouldn’t want it any other way because I didn’t want it to end!! The setting is amazing, makes you dream of beach walks and how three different women walk on the same sand, experiencing different things.
If you’re looking for a summer romance as well as relationships developing between characters then this is the book for you!
Thank you for letting me review via NetGalley!
I love a Sarah Morgan book - who doesn't?! They are always a really good story with great characters and I always seem to get really drawn into the world she creates. This latest book was no exception - the setting of Dune Cottage on Cape Cod sounded idyllic and I loved all the family as well as the mysteries from the past that hung around them. And I'm sure this isn't spoiling it, but you always get a lovely happy ending with a Sarah Morgan book, with all the loose ends tied up (which I like!)! My only criticism would be that particularly towards the beginning, some of the feelings / emotions bits were a bit protracted and drawn out - I just wanted to find out what was going to happen next!
Highly recommend this book. Thank you to Net Galley and the publishers for allowing me to read it in exchange for an honest review which is what I have given.
I loved this book, full of characters at crossroads in their lives.
Cecilia is the main character who has recently lost her famous artist husband and is trying to figure out where her life is going now, but her family are suffocating her a bit, especially her controlling daughter Kristen. She decides she's had enough and needs some time on her own when her daughter arranges a large party celebrating her father's work and Cecilia's 75th birthday, and even though Cecilia said she didn't want a party Kristen arranged it anyway.
So as the party is starting Cecilia packs a bag and escapes to a cottage she owns on The Cape that none of the other family know about. Cecilia thought her husband had sold it many years ago after a certain incident. She only found out he hadn't actually sold it after his death, so goes there to confront some demons from her past.
But once there she finds Lily staying there illegally, and finds she knows her slightly as she is also a friend of her granddaughter. Lily is also at a crossroads as she had been studying to be a doctor to please her parents, but hated it as she wanted to be an artist. So she had dropped out and was currently working as a cleaner in holiday properties around The Cape, and trying to figure out what she wanted in life too.
So we have two main characters at a crossroads in their life, younger and older, but both helping each other to figure out what they want to do with no judgement, which is exactly what they both needed. We also have the side characters of Todd, Cecilia's grandson who Lily has loved for years, who turns up at the cottage to see if his gran is OK - and Kristen's relationship with her surgeon husband Theo, which is having a bit of a crisis, for Kristen anyway, Theo is too busy helping everyone else in his important surgeon job to notice it. Everyone eventually ends up at the cottage, where old secrets are revealed.
I loved the renewed relationship betwen Cecilia and her first love Seth, who lives nearby, and how each couple sorted eventually out what they wanted in life and took new paths.
Sarah Morgan is one of my automatic reads, it doesn't matter what the subject matter is about I know I'll love the story, and this one was no exception and had me up until the early hours finishing it!
Susan Morgan is one of my favourite authors she never fails to uplift & cheer me up with one of her amazing stories.
She delivers yet again with this latest book & I just completely lost myself in it for two days.
Well written & easy to read the words flow effortlessly.
You go through quite a mix of emotions when you read her stories as you could be shedding a tear , smiling or laughing out loud.
If you want a cosy read to lose yourself in for a while then this is a winner.
Lily Thomas has secretly been staying in an unoccupied cottage that she cleans every week.
She works for a cleaning firm that looks after such properties to make ends meet while she paints.
Dune cottage has been empty for absolutely years & nobody ever comes.
She really loves this one though as it’s secluded with great views & is on the beach.
She is struggling though as she has dropped out of medical school as she wants to be an artist but thinks she isn’t good enough.
Celia Lapthorne needs to escape her 75th birthday celebrations as they spiral out of control.
It’s a celebration for her & her late husband a famous artist to show off all his work.
She panics & knows she just needs to get out of there with nobody noticing.
She has since learnt she still owns dune cottage & thinks this will be perfect as nobody in the family know about it.
This was a real page turner for me & I couldn’t put it down.
Thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.
I’ve read several books but Sarah Morgan and they never fail to provide an uplifting enjoyable read, “Summer Swap” is another that delivers. The story invites readers into a tale brimming with warmth, friendship, and the promise of new beginnings. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Cape Cod this novel unfolds the intertwining stories and friendship between Cecilia and Lily, two women at different crossroads in their lives.
Morgan intricately weaves together the lives of these characters, crafting a narrative that effortlessly blends heartwarming moments with poignant reflections. While the plot was somewhat predictable, the storytelling contains genuine emotion and depth that led you routing for a happy ending that does not disappoint. From family dynamics to themes of love, forgiveness, and self-discovery, "Summer Swap" is a delightful summer read, I can’t wait for the next book.
This story is based around a young woman running away and trying to sort her life out so that her parents will be proud of her and she will be happy and an older woman who is just a little bit lost.
Lily has run away from the stress and panic attacks. She is working as a holiday let cleaner and is secretly staying in one of them. The beautiful Dune cottage located on the beach with amazing views. So it is a mystery to her why the owners never visit.
After the death of her husband Cecelia is feeling the need for change - what should she do next? For so many years she has just been the wife of the famous artist and completely overshadowed. Even now she feels as though she is just the widow of the famous C Lapthorne. Whilst getting ready for her 75th birthday party she is confronted by a secret from the past. More confused than ever she feels that the only choice she has is to leave and have some time to herself. Quickly packing she runs away to her past and Dune cottage.
can the two women help each other heal and start to move on.
A beautifully written story of friendship, love, hope and new beginnings.
The perfect summer holiday read, I loved this book and read it in one sitting! The relationship between Lily and Cecilia is really lovely! The respect and care they showed each other, even though their ages were 50 years apart, was extremely well done! Lots of funny and heartwarming moments. Definitely a fun summer read.
If there was a disfuncational family then it's the Lapthorne's. From the moment you open the page, there's always something going on so its no wonder that Cecelia, who absoutely hates her late husband runs away. Then there's Lily: a medical school drop out who didn't think it through.
Normally I adore Sarah's books but this is another summer book that was like oh really. It was predicable which isn't normally Sarah. Disappointed.
I'm a real fan of Sarah Morgan so I knew I'd probably enjoy this book anyway but I'd say it's even better than her usual ones. I loved everything about it. The Lanthorpe family characters all felt very authentic and although I didn't particularly like Kristen in the first half of the book, I ended up admiring her. Cecilia, Todd, Hannah- all great characters, none more so than Cecilia and Lily. I loved the descriptions and the setting of the Cape and of Dune cottage. I enjoyed the artistic twist, and felt quietly smug that I had guessed that might be the case earlier on in the novel. It was an enjoyable read; lighthearted in places but meaty enough to feel intriguing and I genuinely felt invested in how they would all come through. Would absolutely recommend.
Kristen has spent a lot of time organising her mother, Cecilia Lapthorne’s 75th birthday party but she doesn't seem to be appreciating it. Kristen is feeling lonely and isolated in her own marriage and has decided to seek solace elsewhere. Cecilia can't face meeting everyone and putting on a happy face, so flees back to a place she hasn't visited for years and only recently found out was still in the family, Dune Cottage. She discovers that Lily Thomas, a friend of her granddaughter, has also escaped there to avoid her family expectations. The unwinding story captivates as only a Sarah Morgan novel can.
A lovely summery read set around the beautiful Dune Cottage on the Cape Cod, USA. Cecilia Lapthorne fleas her family home after her daughter arranges a birthday party in her honour. Cecilia arrives at the cottage with apprehension as it holds sordid memories for her. Upon arrival she finds a young woman Lily there, who is also seeking solace from her family. A friendship between them quickly develops as they both try to heal from the past.
I enjoyed this delightful 5 star story. My thanks to Net Galley for the advanced digital copy.
Lovely, lovely, lovely. I have a read a few Sarah Morgan books now and I love her character development and dynamics.
This is a great summer read, wonderful descriptions of the beach, family feuds and relationship dramas and romance. I really enjoyed this one.
Another great read from Sarah Morgan. When Cecelia Lapthorne's daughter Kristen decides to throw her a party for her 75th birthday and also to celebrate her artist father's life as he had died the year before she realises she can't cope with it it all and suddenly decides to leave. She goes to Dunne cottage on Cape Cod ,she hadn't been there for years after believing her husband had sold it ,where she tries to decide what to do moving forward. Cecelia meets Lily who is also trying to sort out her life and career choices and they instantly become friends. She has many family issues to contend with and other issues and a secret that she has to confess before she can finally find happiness again. A story of family, friendships and forgiveness and its beautifully written with warmhearted characters and Cecelia was for me the heart of the story. I loved itb
Another wonderfully put together book by sarah morgan, a multigenerational poignant read that focuses on love, second chances, family dynamics and forgiveness and understanding! A read that will stay with you long after you have read it!
Three women of different generations all facing their own issues/problems such as widowhood, grief, relationship woes, family expectations and unhappiness!
Based primarily in the beautiful setting of Cape Cod and centred around the delightful Dune cottage, we are taken along on an amazing journey of growth, forgiveness and new starts as the three female characters reevaluate their lives and in doing so become intrinsically linked, happier, more fulfilled and at peace with their decisions!
A beautiful story that really pulls you in, I really didn’t want it to end! Would highly recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for this early read.
"Summer Swap" by Sarah Morgan is a charming summer novel that radiates feel-good vibes.
