This was absolutely awful and I question myself how this got published. The two characters were terrible. Honestly, I read this in February and cannot remember much more than that and I physically threw my Kindle down.
Reading Between the Wines book review #91/130 for 2024:
Rating: 3🍷🍷🍷
Book: The Holiday
Author: John Nicholl
Available now!! Released on February 22, 2024!
Sipping thoughts: Wow! If gaslighting, lying, horrible partners, and cheating are your thing then this book is just for you. I could not deal with how needy and weak Susie was and how disgusting the husband was. The ending made me mad and I was wishing for a different one.
Cheers and thank you to @BoldwoodBooks and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @TheHoliday.

Perfect beach read. You know some books you wishes you’d read in holiday and this was one of them. Loved it.
I was absolutely hooked from the begining. I was absolutely entrantsed with goosebumps down my back!! I could not stop reading this gripping thriller. It was so good. Days later I still can't quit thinking about it!! Love it!
This is a great thriller with some pretty unexpected twists. I would definitely pack this book on your next holiday as it is a great book to read on a plane or while relaxing on the beach - but will still keep you on your toes. I would definitely recommend this book. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to check out this book.
Love a good thriller mystery and this was a perfect read on the beach. Written well and enjoyed the storyline too. The settings was imaginable as where the characters.
A good read
A psychological thriller
With twists and turns you won’t expect
You won’t want to put it down
Thanks NetGalley
This was not my favorite. I just couldn't get on board with how 'frumpy' they made the wife seem. She didn't match up with the husband, nor the eventual friend. The twist at the end was good, but I felt it took too long to get there.
In just a month's time I will be going for my summer holiday with my husband. Reading this book so close to the holiday, might not have been a good idea. I was reading deeply into the night until I finished it!
The Holiday is the newest psychological thriller by John Nicholl. Picture this…a husband and wife go on a much needed holiday to a tropical getaway. However it is completely paid for by her, the husband holding so much resentment that the result is a bitter and toxic relationship. Almost from the beginning of the book, the author lays out the characteristics of the couple. The husband is a despicable jerk, with complete disrespect for Susie (his wife). Susie tries to hold all her senses about her, with the authors generating a sense of sympathy.
The book starts right in and moves quickly throughout. The writing is spot on, leaving nothing to the untouched. It is written from the pov of the wife and husband, which adds that much more insightful mess into the inner thoughts.
My favorite thing about the author’s writing is that he’s not timid about showing the true evilness of a character. He has a way of drawing you in, and at times leaves you with your jaw dropped in disbelief.
If you’re looking for a quick-reading, psychological thriller, look no further than The Holiday.
This was suppose to be a getaway for a married couple having trouble but we find out the husband is a little unhappy and a stranger on the plane with them makes for a disaster maybe? Although I didn’t really care for either of the characters this story has a few twist and turns that will have you guessing what’s next for them.
I thought the synopsis of this book looked good but I just didn’t enjoy it. Both main characters were extremely obnoxious and it was predictable. The story centers on married couple Suzie and George who go on a vacation to try to revive their relationship after going through a rough patch.
Suzie and George were both awful and honestly felt like caricatures. There was also a lot of time spent on repetitive inner monologues that didn’t move the story along. I felt like the twists were predictable and I basically knew the ending from very early in the book.
Overall, this wasn’t for me at all. I haven’t read any other books by this author but I see many of them have great reviews so will pick up another one and try again. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A gripping read about an unhappily married couple who go on holiday, and the husband is trying to extract himself from the marriage……that coupled with a beautiful stranger on the plane to the same resort,,..easy read with twists and turns.
I am afraid that I found the characters in this book to be totally despicable. She was a whiney, miserable wife and he was a complete philanderer, how can you care about either of them.
A story of marriage, religion, family and depravity, an unwholesome mix.
I really did not enjoy it at all.
Unfortunately I didnt connect with this book. I just couldnt connect to the characters. I also guessed the ending and that was disappointing for me.
Was it a perfect getaway or a perfect nightmare I will let you decide. This was a breathtaking thriller that had me gripped instantly. The twists and turns were crazy and this was one hell of a rollercoaster and that ending won’t be easy to forget. The writing style was great, and easy to follow I love the dual POV in this one! Highly recommend.
I have previously read quite a few books by John Nicholl, and some of them are creepy and dark and give you a sense of unease, in a gripping way. But this one didn't have quite the same affect for me.
I really didn't like either of the main characters at all, the Husband and Wife both had their faults. And the things she put up with and just put up with were crazy, but then I guess some peoples religion does win over in these situations.
It was still a good story and I liked the twists in it, I just didn't enjoy it as much as John's previous books. But this wouldn't stop me reaching for the next, as I do still enjoy them.
Thank you Netgalley, John Nicholl and Boldwood Books for the eArc of The Holiday.
This is one of the first books Ive picked up of John Nicholls and even though the synopsis grabbed me, the story didn't so much. It does however tackle psychological relationship issues, Extremist Catholicism and boundaries. I found it hard to bond with both characters of this narrative and didn't really like them either ( I normally enjoy unlikable characters ) I did finish this book and unfortunately didn't deliver as much as I wanted.
3 stars
Husbands and wives go through hard patches but it is their commitment to get back to the good times that makes a good marriage. When George and his wife (the narrator) embark on a holiday to repair their fractured marriage they have much to work through. It seems that their troubles might be past them when they get on the plane but things quickly unravel.
Was looking forward to this one, having read John Nicol before. The synopsis was intriguing and I thought id love this one, however it wasn't quite what I had expected and didn't grab me. I did still enjoy reading.
Thanks to netgalley for the arc of this book in exchange for my honest review
