Grace is an avid reader and a 50-something. She came up with the idea for the book club. She is an enigma and high energy. She knows everyone.

Leah (15 yrs younger than Grace) is a mom and wife. She has a not-so-happy teen daughter. She thought the idea of moving to the area would be to live a sustainable life growing and selling food, but things are going differently than planned. Grace is her friend.

Monica is a young mom whose husband's job (pilot) has brought her to the area. However, she is left alone with a young baby due to his job. She is excited about the Book Club and connecting with other adults.

George, a handyman, has lived in the area for a year. He is renovating a property for a client and lives here year-round. He decides to join the Book Club to meet other people.

Alfie is a quiet young man and the youngest of the group (among the other 40s and 50s). He moved to Bordeaux with his mom years earlier. He keeps to himself. Grace thought he might be more suited to a chess club or gaming organization.

With the unlikely bunch, they each take turns choosing a book and hosting. Slowly, they form friendships, getting to know one another better. They choose such great classics to read and discuss. Books will eventually open their eyes to the possibility of something new. If you are a book lover and love to travel, this is for you!

Gillian Harvey is a new author for me. I enjoyed her last book and was excited about another adventure. She does not disappoint. Her books are character-driven, filled with beautiful metaphors, vivid settings, and, most importantly, the power of stories.

Filled with insights and humor, this is a beautiful, witty, heartwarming story of loneliness, grief, and self-discovery with the unlikeliest characters. It's a book club that turns into something more!

This enjoyable read is set in Cenac near Bordeaux. An eclectic group of 5 ex-pats start an English-speaking book club. It’s started by Grace who is a bit of an enigma but who seems to be involved in everything. Leah moved to France with her husband and their teenage daughter to live off the land. Monica moved there with her husband and baby girl. Her husband is a pilot and is gone a lot. George is a handyman who is there helping to build a house for his friend. Alfie moved to France with his mom when he was younger. They each take turns picking a book and hosting. As they meet they slowly get to know each other and their stories through their books and meetings. They end up reading a lot of classics, Wuthering Heights, Pride, and Prejudice, etc. through their conversations, it’s interesting to see the connections they make with the characters and each other as they slowly share a bit about themselves. I love traveling and enjoy reading books set in foreign countries and this was no exception. I loved the characters and the friendships they made through the books they read. I liked how they read the classics and had new, interesting perspectives on the characters and the stories.

A lovely heartwarming novel of loneliness, friendship and of course, books. Each member of Bordeux book club are looking to escape into literature and they found new friendship and support with each other. From a new mum, a mum of a petulant teenager and young lad who is close with his mum there was someone to connect to making it a joy to see how their story would unfold.
The location descriptions made me wish to travel to see Bordeux myself with its rural landscape and boutique shops and cafes. The warmth of the actual club extended outwards to the reader giving me a bookish hug. It was a joy to read.

Beautifully written and poignant, escapism is the order of the day in this gorgeous novel. An unlikely mix of ex-pats in Bordeaux form a bookclub and discover as much about themselves as they do the characters in the books they read. I really enjoyed how they picked the classics to read and how they all had a very different reaction to the protagonists in those books, offering a modern insight into how societal behaviours have changed and what was once considered romantic could now be perceived as controlling.

With each of the well developed characters facing very different challenges in their personal lives, what starts as a distraction for them, turns into a deep and supportive friendship that really highlights the importance of books.

I was very excited about The Bordeaux Book Club but I was let down by this book I had to DNF it, because it wasn’t like I thought it was going to be I couldn’t really understand what was going on or connect with the book and I like to have a connection with the book, the plot and the characters, but I couldn’t connect with them at all. I just think it wasn’t my cup of tea like I thought it was It may be someone else’s cup of tea, but it isn’t mine.

A gorgeous read that I was able to get through on one hot summers day. This is a story about a group of strangers who attend a book club together and through getting to know each other learn how to communicate and be open and honest, not only with and between themselves, but also with others outside of that circle. The characters were familiar and felt like friends. Will be looking for more to read by this author. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

A heart-warming story of five strangers being brought together through their love of books and a book club in France set up by Grace. The book club members are from different walks of life and different ages, and I enjoyed the diversity. As they read and discuss some classics we get to learn more about each character. A very enjoyable read, great holiday read for sitting back in the Bordeaux countryside with a glass of wine.

I really wanted to love this book because the synopsis sounded so great. However, I found myself just finding it okay, but I’m not even entirely sure what it is that wasn’t working for me. Maybe it just wasn’t the right timing as I’d finished another very character driven novel right before so this one felt like it dragged a little to me. But in general The Bordeaux Book Club was a cute escapist read and I’d definitely recommend it if you like slow-burn stories with lots of character depth.

The Bordeaux Book Club is a lovely story of the importance of human connections. Gillian Harvey's characters remind us that, as humans, we cannot exist in a bubble. We each have needs and - more importantly - each have the ability to fill a need in someone else's life.

The Bordeaux Book Club started as a way to bring English speakers together in the Bordeaux area of France. The five members seemingly have little in common. They come from different backgrounds, range in age from teen to mature adult, and join the book club for varying reasons. Through their thoughtful discussion of books, they develop a fellowship that goes beyond the written word. We should never doubt the ability of books to bring people together.

This was my first book by Gillian Harvey and I was impressed with her ability to craft complex and complete characters. Her writing drew me in and the storyline was uplifting. I will definitely be checking out more of her work.

This was an easy read, takes place in Bordeaux, a small group of different ages form a book club, good plot and characters, although for me the characters were introduced too quickly. This was a good book to read on vacation. It's the first book I've read by Gillian Harvey and I would read more.

Summary: Grace starts a book club for Anglophones, and a couple of expats from England join it. This includes Leah, whose husband disappears for hours each day and whose daughter seems distant. The book club members explore personal issues while the books they read tie them together.

Review: This book is incredibly slow-paced and character-driven, but I enjoyed reading about the characters and their issues. It’s interesting to see how a book club ties them together. Their opinions about the books they read are also interesting, especially with how they link to their real life even though the books they read were classics.

The characters are interesting in their respective issues. In a way, it's realistic. Various topics that are touched on include a dying parent, suspicion of an affair, parent-teenager relationships and loneliness, most of which are related to their families. The story is told through a third-person narrative through the eyes of these characters. With their being English expats living in France, it's an interesting perspective to offer.

There is nothing better in life than reading a good book and this book is about a group of people coming together to form The Bordeaux book club.
These characters were all so different and yet to see them all connected by books was amazing. I liked the way they were able to talk about so many different types of books.
I think this book would be an excellent choice for a book club to read and discuss.

Books bring people together and help them become friends. This is a well crafted story, full of wise ideas and hints about how to cope in life's maze..I enjoyed the book very much.

Leah and her husband's move to France, driven by dreams of self-sufficiency, falls short of the idyllic vision. Despite hours of digging, they only unearth a single, straggly carrot. With a rebellious teenage daughter and a husband prone to disappearing acts, Leah seeks connection by joining a newly formed book club suggested by her friend. This diverse group discovers unity in the stories they share, providing a support system for Leah amid strains on her marriage.

The characters, skillfully crafted, resonate against the backdrop of the French landscape, delving into themes of friendship and reinvention.

This story is like a comfortable shoe, familiar and warming! I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The plot was a good one, the book club the centre, with the characters and their lives branching off from that.
The characters were great. We got to learn all about them and how the book club friendships helped their lives outside of that!. I loved them all!!

Five people too different to find anything in common. Well, anything but their language. Five English people living in Bourdeux, France, trying to find a new life. And they bond around books, but some much more. They start by sharing an afternoon drinking wine and commenting an old book and fin themselves sharing their lives, fears, dreams and helping each other in ways they never saw coming. Great.

A book club for ex-pats. A place to read the classics, make friends and deal with personal problems. Well written, allowing the reader to enter the lives of the members.
