I really enjoyed this book. It was everything I like in a romance and I had an enjoyable time reading it. To me, it didn't hit as hard for me as Fortune's other reads, which is why I left it as a slightly lower rating of 3.5 stars.
Fortune fantastically brought the island to life and it is no secret that her writing brings these places she writes about so real and raw. I have never been the greatest fan of second chance love and this was heavy so if you are a fan of this trope - this may be the book for you! This being said, the love story was written very well and I was rooting for Lucy and Felix, despite the plea Lucy had continued to make.
Overall, a cutesy romance, with sprinkles of spice and forbidden love.
tropes: best friend's brother, forbidden, friends-to-lovers,
In a now-and-then timeline, we follow Lucy as she takes a trip to the place her best friend grew up, Prince Edward Island, for the first time and the five years that follow when she returns each year. The first time Lucy goes to PEI, Bridget misses her flight. To entertain herself, Lucy goes to a restaurant where she meets Felix & they instantly connect and go home together. It's not until the next morning she realises her mistake - Felix is Bridget's brother. That morning they create rules; one is that it won't happen again. Five years later, after breaking their rule each year, Lucy is forced to return to PEI unexpectedly in order to help Bridget. Despite her growing feelings for Felix, Lucy vows that This Summer Will Be Different.
I loved the writing in this book. The descriptions of the surroundings make it so easy to picture everything and make it feel like you're really on the island. I loved the then-and-now timeline. I loved to be able to actually see and experience what happened in the past rather than just having it be explained. Another thing I loved was that the chapters were quite short which helped me move through the book quickly and made me want to read more and keep reading for longer.
I liked Lucy, she was a fun main character to follow and I absolutely adored Felix. He was so sweet and so attentive and I loved him so much & he's a reader so he gets bonus points.
I loved seeing the friendship between Lucy and Felix develop as well as the romantic relationship. I love the slow development of their relationship and the way they loved each other in small, subtle ways and noticed tiny things about each other. They send little meaningful gifts back and forth even while they were just friends and I though it was the sweetest thing. I love them so much.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and kept me interested the entire time. I also really loved Carley Fortune's writing, it was beautiful, and I will definitely read more of her works.
- Thankyou NetGalley and Micheal Joseph, Penguin Random House for the e-arc! -
I really enjoyed this. A solid romantic drama, with two characters you can really root for, and a gorgeously written, evocative setting. I like the dual timeline, moving back and forth in time, and felt like this was well handled and easy to follow. My only gripe is that it was a bit overlong. Aside from that, really really enjoyed and will be recommending!
There is no world in which I will not IMMEDIATELY jump at a chance to read. Carley Fortune book. Every single romance in her books has me swinging my feet and giggling with glee and the summer will be different was no different (ha!). Her vivid storytelling had me believing I was right next to Lucy as she first arrived in PEI and made me desperately homesick for Canada and looking up flights to PEI for my next vacation for my own plates of oysters.
Beyond the romance, I am completely obsessed with the friendship between Lucy and Bridget that drove the book. You could feel their support and love for each other through every page and action. They reminded me so much of my own Bridget and it filled my heart with such joy. There’s nothing I love more than strong, supportive female friends 🫶🏻.
I love, love, loved this book and I’ll be recommending it to everyone who will listen to me!!!
Carly Fortune consistently captures summer dazzlingly in her books, and This Summer Will Be Different is evidence of that. From the adorable Wowie the cow to the many Anne of Green Gables references, the book is full of tiny details that make the story so special. The writing is descriptive and focused, making it easy to imagine even the smallest details like a dot of sand inside an oyster. Felix is such a loveable character, as well as Lucy. The friendship dynamic is fun too and her special relationship with her aunt.
Lucy has plans to visit her best friends home town on Prince Edward Island, however, Bridget is delayed, so Lucy goes to a bar and hooks up with a guy working there. What she doesn’t expect is to learn the next morning said guy was Bridget’s brother. They agree to pretend that night never happened and never tell Bridget about it.
As the years go by though and Lucy continues to visit, the chemistry between them is undeniable and they can’t keep away from each other. They live such different lives though, is it just a repeated summer fling? And is it worth risking her friendship anyway?
I have really enjoyed all of the Carley Fortune books I’ve read so far and this one wasn’t an exception. The characters were all likeable, the setting beautiful and the multiple timelines left things intriguing. If you haven’t picked up her books yet I definitely recommend doing it! This one is out next week - 9th May!
This book started out promising the first 20%. Seemed cute and fun. But then nothing happened. Waited the whole damn book for the “big reveal” as to what her friend Bridget’s “crisis” was and it was underwhelming.
There was zeroooo chemistry between Felix and Lucy, like they had sex once a year and knew nothing else about him, I didn’t get it.
The ending was boring. The whole thing was boring to be honest. And he was obsessed with girly classics like pride and prejudice and Anne of green gables just seemed unrealistic. What 28 year old man reads them in the real world 😂
The only thing I did like was the friendship between Bridget and Lucy, that did seem genuine. But honestly don’t waste your time, nothing happens in this book. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC - book comes out 9th May!
This book is summer in a book. I liked that it went back and forth between the present and the past - actually showing the relationship between Lucy and Felix rather than just telling us about their past. I love a second chance romance in books and I think this was really well done.
The end was a bit all over the place and felt a bit rushed. That was why it wasn’t a five stars. Also some of the side characters were a bit two-dimensional.
Overall I really enjoyed the book.
I'm calling it now. Carley Fortune puts something so addictive in each of her books because every single one I've inhaled and read it in a day! Like once I start I just can't stop! And this was no different!
I loved the different timelines throughout to get a glimpse at the present narrative but also see how the relationship developed. Felix and Lucy are so meant to be and it's obvious from their first encounter. But if course the path of true love doesn't run smoothly. Felix is her best friends brother. One of my favourite tropes! I loved it!
This will be the perfect summer read for all romance lovers 🩷
At the start of the book, Lucy (also known as Bee) is best friends with Bridget and she comes to spend the summer at the her families lake house. Lucy arrives a day early and meets Felix when they end up spending the night together to realise the next morning that Felix is Bridget’s brother. They tell themselves it will never happen again and try to act normal.
We then jump forward abit and Lucy runs a florist which she loves and Bridget’s preparing to get married. She calls Lucy frantically after not showing up for her dress fitting asking her to fly back to Bridget’s hometown. Lucy is concerned for her friend but drops everything to go and be with her friend. Of course this also means being reunited with Felix.
The timelines switch throughout the story which I felt really helped you get an understanding of Lucy and Felix’s feelings and had me rooting for them. I binged this book as I was so invested in the characters. The setting was easy to imagine in my mind and I loved the writing. Adding in male main character that reads??? Easy 5 stars ⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me a copy to review.
“‘Carrots,’ he says, ‘are very good for you.’
‘You,’ I tell him, ‘are very good for me.’
I have to believe that Lucy 'Bee' and Felix 'Wolf' will make it through anything life throws at them after this rollercoaster of emotions.
'This Summer Will Be Different' follows Lucy, who is trying to find out where she fits in the world as she is taking over her auntie's flower shop after she succumbed to cancer. She is also trying to not get attached to this certain boy she met, who also turns out to be her best friend's younger brother, Felix.
Lucy and her best friend, Bridget, are supposed to spend the summer together in Bridget's childhood home in Prince Edward's Island, but when Bridget's flight is delayed, Lucy has to find a way to pass the time. What better way to spend that time by ogling the cute looking guy eating oysters at the bar? Is it too late to go back in time when she finds out the cute looking guy is Felix, Bridget's younger brother whom she only heard of as Wolf.
The story follows them as they try to fight the attraction they have when Lucy comes back to PEI every year, it doesn't always end up the way they want.
I love and live for Lucy and Bridget's friendship, it runs so deep that nothing and no one could change that. Bridget asks Lucy to fly out the next day because she is crying, no questions asked. I will admit I did get a little bit annoyed at Bridget at some times because of all the secrecy, however Lucy wasn't fully being honest either. This is a beautiful story of friendship, love and understanding yourself before throwing yourself in the deep.
I want to thank Netgalley for giving me an opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Think I need a Felix! I loved this book so much, probably my favourite Carley Fortune book so far :) I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to delve into this summer read and will definitely be re-reading when I get myself to a beach!
It had me smiling the whole way through, the tension and atmosphere was 🔥 and had me reading for hours. The book brought the perfect amount of romance, fun and flirtatiousness which balanced out the emotion in the book around friendships, love and loss.
I loved the way this was written and I feel so lucky I got to be a part of Lucy and Felix’s story because it was everything 🫶 - thank you to Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House for making that happen!
Another Carley Fortune classic! I loved the storyline and the characters. Love the friends to lovers trope and will definitely be recommending this as the perfect summer book to all my girlfriends.
Lucy is the tourist vacationing at a beach house on Prince Edward Island. Felix is the local who shows her a very good time. The only problem: Lucy doesn’t know he’s her best friend’s younger brother. Lucy and Felix’s chemistry is unreal, but the list of reasons why they need to stay away from each other is long, and they vow to never repeat that electric night again.
It’s easier said than done.
Each year, Lucy escapes to PEI for a big breath of coastal air, fresh oysters and crisp vinho verde with her best friend, Bridget. Every visit begins with a long walk on the beach, beneath soaring red cliffs and a golden sun. And every visit, Lucy promises herself she won’t wind up in Felix’s bed. Again.
If Lucy can’t help being drawn to Felix, at least she’s always kept her heart out of it.
When Bridget suddenly flees Toronto a week before her wedding, Lucy drops everything to follow her to the island. Her mission is to help Bridget through her crisis and resist the one man she’s never been able to. But Felix’s sparkling eyes and flirty quips have been replaced with something new, and Lucy’s beginning to wonder just how safe her heart truly is.
I absolutely loved Every Summer After, it was one of my favourite books the year it was published. Unfortunately I didn’t love Meet Me at the Lake, it really fell flat for me so needless to say I was intrigued to see how I would feel about This Summer Will be Different. I’m delighted to say I loved it! A solid 4.5⭐️ read for me, which might change to 5⭐️ when I’ve had more time to think on it.
There are 3 rules for the trip:
1) Eat your weight in Oysters
2) Leave the city behind
3) Don’t fall in love with my brother
Lucy ‘Bee’ Ashby joins her best friend/roommate Bridget in her hometown on Prince Edward Island every summer. On her first visit to the island five years ago, Bridget is late to arrive so Lucy is left to explore on her own. At a local restaurant she meets a gorgeous islander with the bluest eyes and ends up going back to his place. It’s not until the next morning that they both realise the stranger, Felix, is actually Bridget’s brother ‘Wolf’. They mutually decide it can’t happen again but the chemistry is palpable and only seems to get stronger every year.
The story is told in different timelines- present and past, with the past revisiting each time Lucy was on PEI and when Felix was in Toronto, which I think really added depth to the story and their relationship. The writing was beautifully descriptive and definitely made me want to visit the island one day. I loved the characters but obviously Felix was my favourite closely followed by Lucy’s aunt. I just loved everything about it! Oh and we even got a little mention of Happy Place by Emily Henry (another one of my favourites).
A great story of found family, female friendship and platonic love, and of course a gorgeous romance. You will probably want to read this in one sitting like I did. I would highly recommend.
Tropes-
• Best friends brother
• Dual timelines
• Forbidden romance
• Forced proximity
• Female friendships
• Found family

another perfect summer book! I had the best time reading this. I loved the friendship between Bridget and lucy, the location the book was set in made me want to go there on holiday immediately.
the forbidden love between bridget and felix was just perfect, I loved the stolen glances, I could feel their love and i just wanted them to be together it made my heart hurt.
Well what can I say about this story but wow! I adored this book...I devoured it in 2 days at every opportunity I had. Lying in bed poorly did not stop me 🤣 an amazing distraction.
This was the most beautiful story of love, friendship and finding and loving yourself.
I love Carleys writing and the timeline shift bringing you into each story line as it happens in time feels like it gives me a much better picture of how it happened and the feelings of each character.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers of this book for gifting me an advance copy of this in exchange for an honest view.
This story follows the ups and downs of Lucy and Felix’s “relationship” - they first met years ago, hooked up one night, only for Lucy to realise Felix was her best friend Bridget’s brother! The book goes between the present and the past and we see the relationship develop and change. We get to see Lucy and Bridget’s friendship and Lucy figuring out what she wants from life.
The relationships and friendships in this book really drew me in and kept me wanting to read. It was very easy to get through and I really enjoyed it! I loved Every Summer After so had high hopes for this, and it did not disappoint.
The book is mainly set on Prince Edward Island and now I’m desperate to go to Canada! Carley Fortune wrote about this island so beautifully!
Would definitely recommend this one for a light, summer romance read!
This book definitely meets the brief of ‘romantic summer read’. The author’s afterword mentions that she wanted to write something fun, and she succeeded - there are moments of angst, character growth, and plenty of pining, but through it all there’s this thread of joy and abiding love. The chemistry between Lucy and Felix shines on the page, matched and possibly eclipsed by the strong friendship between Lucy and Bridget. Add in the obvious fondness for Prince Edward Island and the references to Anne of Green Gables, and this is the author’s best work yet.
Carley’s latest work shines brightly! Her prose transports you to a tranquil island where the tang of salt fills the air and the rhythmic melody of ocean waves lulls you into serenity. The characters are beautifully crafted, each playing a vital role in the narrative beyond mere romantic entanglements. Primarily centered around Lucy, her closest confidante, and Wolf/Felix, the tale weaves a captivating web of relationships.
Upon arriving on the island, Lucy’s best friend imparts three cardinal rules: first, indulge in a feast of oysters; second, leave the hustle and bustle of the city far behind; and lastly, guard your heart against falling for her brother. Yet, as fate would have it, that final rule is not so easily upheld.
What sets this story apart from conventional romance narratives is its profound exploration of self-discovery and the quest for belonging. The bond shared between the best friends is tender and heartwarming, illustrating that the most enduring love stories extend beyond the realm of romance.
