Carley Fortune does it again. Every time I pick up one of her novels, I read through them in a day. This Summer Will Be Different had me gushing over the romance just as much as her first two books. The characters had great chemistry, the setting was enthralling and it was just so, so fun to read. I loved the role friendship played in this novel and following Lucy's journey. This is the perfect romance for a summer's day - it'll sweep you off your feet.
This Summer Will Be Different is *the* romance book of 2024, and I loved every page of it. It gave me summery vibes, loveable characters, and lots of kick-your-feet moments. I swooned all my swoons over Felix (sigh), wanted to be best friends with Lucy, and wished that I could visit the idyllic Prince Edward Island for myself.
In addition to the addictive romance, which is filled with longing looks and pining (oh, the pining!), this book is also a gentle exploration of grief, a reminder of the importance of finding yourself, and a love letter to female friendships. It covers all these topics and more, quietly weaving them all together to form what is now one of my favourite additions to the romance genre.
Carley Fortune is a fantastic writer, and it really shows in this book. Her ability to write characters that instantly connect — not only with each other, but also with the reader — is second to none, and I haven’t been immediately swept away since a similar reading experience last year (Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan). Felix and Lucy grabbed me from the very first chapter, and they didn’t let go until the end. I want more, just like Lucy. (Will there ever be a sequel? Probably not, but I want one.)
This Summer Will Be Different is the easiest five stars I’ll give this year, and I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about it. I’m a strong believer in books finding readers at the perfect time, and this was definitely the perfect time for me to be transported to PEI, where I met two flawed but likeable people who had no idea who they were. The next five years followed their story, and what a story it was. I can’t wait to obsessively think about it until Carley Fortune’s next book!
Yes I did read this book the same day I got approved for it because once I started this I literally could not stop. Carley Fortune is one of my favourite romance authors with her unfailing ability to make me cry and fall in love with her characters - and this was no different for This Summer Will Be Different.
The story follows of the trope of best friend's brother so has a bit of forbidden romance vibe going on, but the summery beachy small town romance vibes I've loved from Carley Fortune's last books are still there. The romantic chemistry in this book was so well done and I loved Lucy as a main character. Although the main focus of the book is naturally the romance between Lucy and Felix, I also enjoyed Lucy and Bridget's friendship. But the romance was so wonderful and I felt like it developed so naturally and was so sweet I just loved everything about it.
Carly Fortune has created another perfect summer read, imbued with salt air and sand, 'This Summer Will Be Different' captures your heart from the very first page. The intense tension between Lucy and Felix jumps off the page, and I simply couldn't put it down. A masterpiece of love, tension, and heartbreak, Fortune has created a book as restorative as a weekend at the coast, I simply loved it.
First I would like to start by saying I appreciate the chance to receive an arc for this books. However I unfortunately had to DNF as my mind couldn’t get past the layout format it was presented. That being said I will be buy this book and give it another chance if the format is different. And I will write a real review on goodreads and Amazon.
Thank you so much NetGalley for this arc
I adored every summer after and haven’t had chance to read her second novel yet but this was GORGEOUS. The setting and the characters felt like true flawed beautiful humans and I have such a fun time exploring their relationship through the years. For me their connection was gorgeous, as was her platonic relationship with her best friend.
This for me was a credit to second chance romance and how frustrating it is as a reader!! My only note would be how outside looking in, we could’ve solved this ourselves and so could they if they communicated. But its an extension of the plot and their character development to communicate so I loved it nevertheless!!!!
Thanks so providing me with another seaside town to escape to Carley this was gorg!
5 Star read! This is my favourite Carley Fortune book so far. I loved Every Summer After but this one is even better on my opinion.
I could not but this book down and I had to stop myself from skimming ahead to Lucy and Felix’s next interaction. Their connection was palpable throughout the book and obviously Carley drip fed it to us as always.
This book was split between the past and current storylines, switching between the too so we find a little of each. This is one of my favourite structures and I’m so glad Carley kept to it.
The book made me fall in love with PEI. I really want to visit it. A book hasn’t made me want to bust the place it’s set in a really long time. It is just described so beautifully and peacefully.
I’m a sucker for a good friendship in books and I adored Lucy and Bridget’s friendship - definitely found sisters vibes!
I really liked the tropes in this one and Carley wrote them well, as they can always turn out a little cringey.
If people haven’t pre-order this book already then what are they doing doing? This is my favourite Carley Fortune book to date and I already need her fourth book!
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this as I hadn’t read any of Carley Fortune’s previous books, but I’m pleased to say I am now a fan of hers for sure! I loved this book, I felt connected to the characters and I really believed in their stories. I was rooting for the main character and her love interest throughout, and the island setting was just perfect.
The story takes place over a five-year period with multiple timelines. I enjoyed how elements of the storyline were revealed through the different summers but it did take me a while to get my head around as it jumped around a lot.
Without giving away any spoilers, I really enjoyed the ending of the book and would happily have kept reading for another 300 pages to see what happens next for these characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for approving me for this ARC. I am a huge Carley Fortune fan and have read all her books - Every Summer After was in my Top 5 Reads of 2023 - so I feel really lucky to get this. I am from the era of The Sisterhood and the Travelling Pants; they were my favourite summer reads as a teen. Carley Fortune feels in the same realm with more romance and more grown up.
What can I say, Fortune is a pro at setting up sexual tension between the two leads within its first few pages. She’s done it with every book so far and this is no different. The opening page draws me straight into Prince Edward Island (I honestly Googled what Charlottetown looked like) and we meet Lucy and Felix, and the obstacle to their relationship, Bridget aka Lucy’s best friend and Felix’s sister.
The story jumps between two timelines: then and now, which is a common tactic used in Fortune’s books. I enjoy it and how they converge in the middle. Out of all her novels, this one has used Place as a character. Prince Edward Island is invoked throughout its pages as a visceral personified setting. Oh the amount of times I wanted to jump on a plane and fly there myself.
I loved this book. You see the growth between Felix and Lucy when they first meet as lust-filled twenty somethings to people figuring out where they want to be in life, particularly the maturity of Lucy. I loved Every Summer After but I’m having a hard time figuring out if I might love this one more. The characters feel more raw and have more depth. It’s a novel about love but also friendship, found family and, ultimately, life.
I’ve rated this 5/5 stars and will continue to read anything else Carly Fortune writes.
EDIT (4 hours later): I can't stop thinking about this book. I think it will stay with me a while because the characters felt so real to me.
This Summer Will Be Different is, without a doubt, Carley Fortune's best work yet! The story explores love and relationships both platonically and romantically in such a beautiful way. It was fast-paced and I flew through it in one evening so invested in the tension building between Lucy and Felix and dying to know what would happen. I would even go as far as saying it is the best Romance I've read so far this year. The spice-to-romance ratio was perfect and Carley Fortune had me laughing out loud and crying as we followed the characters' journeys.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy of this e-arc!
Lucy and Felix met before they knew their lives were already intertwined but yet over the years couldn’t help falling in love with each other.
The dual timeline did give extra context to the plot but Bridget did annoy me and they way they kind of lingered around each other. Lucy jumped on a plane and put her life on hold with no explanation for days and even if you know what the person is liike I don’t think that’s fair.
I think both female characters treated one another unfairly and Lucy was very hypocritical.
It was a decent read but I feel like she had a routine of how she formulates her books and they’re quick easy reads but nothing extra.
This Summer Will Be Different oozes nostalgic beachy vibes and made me think of summers I wish I could revisit.
From the moment Lucy and Felix met across a bar top on PEI there was a special spark, you could feel their chemistry and it felt extra special because it was forbidden in the summer sun. This is a searing character-driven romance with longing and soul-searching, interspersed by moments of great joy when the two are together again on the island for brief periods, or, occasionally connecting in Toronto.
There is another great love, just as important to Lucy and to the story, which plays out alongside and intertwined with Lucy and Felix's tale, and that's between Lucy and her best friend, Felix's older sister Bridget.
Found family and friendships are at the heart of what makes this story tick and feel so realistic. Not everyone is nice or right all the time, people behave inconsistently and emotionally, just like real people in real situations might do - even if you don't like what they do!
I enjoyed This Summer Will Be Different immensely and I think the feelings it evoked will stay with me for some time. Is it perfect? Of course not - it's probably a little overlong and drawn out in parts, and of course I wanted to shake Bridget for being so thoughtless in the way she treated people. I read this as I'm a big fan of a younger man/older woman (reverse age gap) and while technically it meets that brief it really isn't relevant in this case as Felix is about 18 months or two years max younger than Lucy so they might as well be the same age.
However, none of that takes away from how much I loved devouring every moment of Lucy and Felix's story - their sheer joy every time they were together, the intimacy they shared and the way they just kept coming back to each other over the years and changes in their lives. Not perfect, but beautiful.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC. This is my own honest opinion, freely given.
Firstly I want to preface this by saying I love Carley Fortune's writing, it reminds me so much of Emily Henry and has a beautiful poetic quality too it, however I had numerous issues with this book.
The characters lack depth and the relationships between them are never fleshed out enough, especially with Felix and lucy. Their chemistry is almost entirely based on lust and very little actual emotional connection, and when those 'emotional' moments do come they feel forced and unnatural. The tempo of the book is also slightly muddled and the multiple timelines weren't distinct enough for me, resulting in confusion and boredom. My last complaint is that I actually really disliked Felix. He was such a flat nothingy character and I felt that him liking books was a personality trait thrown in too make him more likeable. I ended up not rooting for the romance because I just didn't care about Felix. (also the descriptions of his clothes felt weird and misplaced, like I don't care what colour t shirt he's wearing today??)
That being the said the atmosphere and setting is gorgeous and the descriptions of prince Edward island and the food is lush, it made my mouth water multiple times. I also think the ending is way more action packed than I expected and was actually really fun to read.
Overall, a good beach read but it has too many things that irritate me for it to be anything worth reading beyond that. I totally see how if you liked books with more spice and less focus on emotion this could be great for you but it was a bit of a miss for me.

Carly Fortune can do no wrong! The queen of romance and an auto buy author for me. I devoured this book in 24 hours.
This story is set over a series of summers where the main character, Lucy, visits her best friend’s family home on a beautiful island (the descriptions of the island are stunning). Lucy, unbeknown to her, spends her first night there with her best friend’s brother.
Over the next few summers you see them get closer and rekindle, the tension and banter is unreal but neither are in a place to commit nor do they want to damage their relationship with the sister. How the author manages to leave you hanging on the edge of your seat with fingers grazing, legs brushing past each other and the public ‘glances’ is just beautiful. Your heart is gripped and I was left racing through the pages to find out more…
This book follows the characters through their 20s navigating life, love, careers and friendships. It was so relatable. It’s heart-warming and gripping and there are moments of pure joy, sadness, laughter and passion. I highly recommend!
I wanna be on Prince Edward Island right now, please and thank you. From the moment I started this book I was HOOKED. I am not normally a prologue girlie, I usually skim read so I can get stuck right into the story but when I say this prologue had me gagged I was screaming internally. The way the tension was written like it was a real and tangible thing they could hold in their hands was incredible and helped make it so believable. FELIX. WHAT A MAN. Even just the smallest of things like the opening of car doors and I fell for him instantly. All the characters in this book were so real and relatable!! I felt like I stepped into the lives of these people who all really existed. I’m trying to write a really thought out and well worded review but the notes I made for myself to help future me write this are as follows:
- I can actually smell the sea
- A MAN WHO READS AND ANNOTATES HIS BOOKS WHILE HAVING A BEARD
- I MISS SCREAMING AND FIGHTING AND KISSING IN THE RAIN ITS 2AM AND IM CURSING UR NAME UR SO IN LOVE THAT U ACT INSANE
- <3 heheheh felix <3
So thank you for that past Chelsie.
If you love forbidden romance, TENSION, summer beach house vibes then you have to read this book!
I can’t wait to get my hands on more Carley Fortune books!!!!!
Loved every page of this! This is a perfect summer romance book - with huge amounts of chemistry, heartache and friendship.
This starts off as a typical falling for your best friend’s brother trope but Carley is an expert at describing places to make you feel like you are there. I knew nothing of Prince Edward Island before but now I feel like I need to visit at least once in my life!
The chemistry between Lucy and Felix was ✨Chef’s Kiss ✨ and I was absolutely rooting for them the entire book.
I loved Every Summer After as well. Carley is now definitely one of my Auto-Buy authors!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

Lucy can't believe it when she instantly connects with Felix while waiting for her best friend to arrive for their trip to Prince Edward Island. But what Lucy doesn't realise is that Felix is her bestie, Bridget's, brother. And that Bridget's one big rule is to not fall for her brother.
Guys!! Carley Fortune is BACK. If you loved her first book, Every Summer After, then I guarantee that you will love this one too. It had the same summery vibes with sizzling chemistry between our two main characters. I really enjoyed Bridget's side story as well which kept the storyline moving along. I read this book within 24 hours - the writing flowed so well and it was hard to put down once I got started.
Lucy and Bridget are best friends. Five summers ago Lucy’s planning to visit the island Bridget grew up on. A list of rules are set the third rule being don’t fall in love with her brother!
The book is set across five summers and now- with the run up to Bridget’s wedding. Lucy suspects her best friend is keeping something from her & in turn she’s keeping her own secrets!
Perfect read for those who enjoy:
- Stories that evoke emotion
- Gentle love stories
- Complexities of female friendship
With thanks to Penguin Random House, Michael Joseph and Netgalley for an ARC copy in return for an honest review.
This was my first Carley Fortune book, and after reading This Summer Will Be Different, she has now become one of my autobuy authors!
Carley Fortune has a way of wrapping up emotion after emotion in her writing style. It's like reading a warm hug, eating your comfort food, relaxing in a hot bath with a glass of wine. She is a master of small town romance!
I instantly loved Bee and Bridget! Their friendship just translated so well across the pages. I guessed kinda early on who Felix was, but I didn't mind one bit. I felt it wasn't so much a secret to us, as the way Bee kept the secret from Bridget. It felt like we were meant to guess and be ahead of Bridget's findings so we were more empathetic to Bee's situation.
I loved Felix and Zach's bond too. Carley Fortune captures friendships in a beautiful way, you can feel people's love for eachother through the book. The intensity, the pain, the friction, the good and the bad.
I loved how Bee and Felix bring out the best in eachother. It felt so natural, the perfect summer romance! And I loved that they got their happy ending. This was the perfect cosy spring/summer vibes read, and I can't wait to add a physical copy to my collection when it's released.
