This book club kit also included tips on how to turn your book club into a 20s themed book club, so fun! I really enjoy these kits, and love that they always include author interviews.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book and when I saw the Book Club Kit, I had to get it. If your book club is reading this book, then this kit will help you prepare a fun and immersive experience for your group. The author interview gives you a little behind the scenes about writing the book and characters. There is a content warning about the challenging topics in this story. There is a good selection of discussion questions. I haven't tried them yet, but there were cocktail and food suggestions that pair nicely with the 1920s. There are several specialty, book cover themed bookmarks you can print out for your meeting. I was nicely surprised by the suggestions to create a 1920s themed experience from dress to dancing to speakeasy ambiance. The author created a fantastic playlist with 12 songs of the era that you can play on Spotify. There were also suggestions about What to Read Next. I would agree that Wild Women and the Blues by Denny S. Bryce pairs nicely with this book for 1920s Chicago and The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson pairs nicely to explore the class divides and the Black elite in 1950s Washington, DC.
If you are planning to read The Mayor of Maxwell Street with your book club, I would highly recommend this kit to enhance and enrich your experience discussing this amazing book.
. I really enjoyed the mayor of maxwell Street and feel that the book club experience was that much better with this book club kit. My favorite elements were the book marks included, the curated song list, and the questions. I also enjoyed reading the author interview. Our group meets in public places so the recipes, costume and games weren't of as much use to us, however a cute addition to make bookclub that much more fun. I feel like the pages of what to read next and publisher books were unnecessary and just added to the massive amount of pages printed. Bookclubs don't pick books that way usually. Local bookclubs who meet in homes would benefit most from this resource packet.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and netgalley for the opportunity to review this kit. My review is wholly my own and in no way skewed by reviving a copy of the packet.
This is an incredible book club resource for the historical fiction ‘The mayor of Maxwell street “.
Replete with discussion questions, author interview and even recipes for cocktails and bites related to the book, I enjoyed this kit more than I thought I would.
I’m very appreciative of this bookclub kit! It allowed me to read this book while paying attention to things to answer the questions. I read this as a buddy read and we had a great discussion using the questions provided
This wonderful little kit includes: Content warnings for the book, Author Interview, Discussion Questions (including one suggested by the author), printable bookmarks, recipes including for drinks!, ideas for having a 20s themed meeting, a playlist curated by the author, and suggestions for what to read next!
"This was the perfect kit for our book club. It took the stress away of finding the right questions and discussion topics."
I absolutely loved the Book Club Kit! It's the perfect resource for anyone looking to enhance their reading experience and spark deeper discussions. The kit is well-organized, with insightful discussion questions, author interviews, and thoughtful suggestions for related books. It really helped guide our group's conversation and made the reading experience feel even more engaging. The additional materials, like background information on the book and its themes, provided context that enriched our understanding. Whether you're in a formal book club or just looking to dive deeper into a novel, this kit is a must-have. Highly recommend!

This was helpful for pre- and post-reading of the story. I was able to use it personally to enhance my reading experience.
This would be a really good book for black history month because it explores the world of a very wealthy person in chicago during the twenties leading up into prohibition. Cause it might have different ideas and things and themes. About this woman who lived that type of lifestyle
1920's black elite society, speakeasys, and an adventure....who could ask for more, right?! I had high hopes that this book would be as fast-paced and riveting as The Great Gatsby was. This started off very strong and was a quick read for about the first half. However, the plot gets unwieldy and it causes the book to drag on. I was trying to root for Nelly and Jay, but I just couldn't feel a spark between them.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to the author, Avery Cunningham, We Are Bookish, and NetGalley for the opportunity to take a look at the Book Club Kit for The Mayor of Maxwell Street. I will post my review to Amazon and Barnes & noble as well. This Book Club Kit for The Mayor of Maxwell Street is an amazing resource for those looking to do a more thorough discussion or have a deeper understanding of the historical novel. With so many important themes and points made in this novel, it can benefit any reader to think a little bit more deeply by engaging with the questions in the kit. There's an interview with the author, which was illuminating, and printable bookmarks, drink and snack recipes, a music playlist, and more! There's even a "what to read next" section that I found a few titles from and added to my TBR. Incredibly grateful to be able to think a little deeper about such a wonderful novel. Thank you again!
I'd never heard of this book before, but this kit makes me want to check it out immediately. I like how the visual design of the pages reflects the aesthetics being discussed and portrayed in the book. The inclusion of content warnings and a note from the author are also really nice additions, I imagine they'd be great to send out ahead of time so that book club participants can know at least that much before going into the story.
This was the perfect kit for our book club. It took the stress away of finding the right questions and discussion topics.
This was a book club pick for one of my book clubs. The book club kit was immensely helpful in keeping our discussion on track and focused. We really enjoyed using the kit for our discussion.
This was not useful with my reading group. While it did not work for us, it will probably be quite suitable for others. I appreciated the opportunity to check out the material.
Great downloads .
I loved them.
I will get more of this promos for sure
Very unique and colorfoul
This book was a joy to read. The characters are likeable and relatable. Nelly's story starts at her brother's funeral, where she encounters the Black Chicago elite, notably the intriguing Jay Shorey, marking the beginning of a captivating narrative. Secretly, Nelly has been contributing articles to a Chicago newspaper under a pseudonym, with her late brother's assistance. Contrasting that her parents only want for her to marry well and secure her future. The racial themes in the novel are a powerful element, almost like an additional character that shapes the world. I recommend this book for anyone who wants read a well-wirtten, thought-provoking novel. #NETGALLEY #THEMAYOROFMAXWELLSTREET
My book club just finished this book today and we used this book club kit.
We loved the recipes and the drinks. Those were such fun parts of the booklet and we loved enjoying them! We also really liked the author discussion and the discussion questions.
But the one feedback we had was that we'd like the bookmarks closer to the front of the booklet. Because the booklet said there were spoilers farther in, most of my group did not go farther into the kit to get to the bookmark until they were done (for fear of spoilers), so we didn't have the bookmarks until we were done with the book and didn't use it.
Otherwise, we really enjoyed the kit and hope to find more for our reads! Thank you for giving us a fun added bonus to our book!
