This is book 3 in the series and although this can be read as a standalone book, I feel I am missing part of the journey having not read the first two.
I enjoyed this read and was intrigued from the very beginning.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for allowing me to read this advanced copy, a read I would recommend!
.I have not read any previous books by this author and so there is background to the characters that I am not privy to. The writing style I thought could have been.sharper. Overall an OK read for me.
I devoured this book in 2 sittings. The storyline was so gripping and left me questioning everyone and everything. I really well written story which finds the detectives questioning all they thought they knew and people from the past I hadn't realised it was part of a series, but it still works as a stand-alone story. The characters are well written, and you really feel like you know them . I will be checking out the other 2 in the series. Thanks Netgalley
Never read this author b4.
It gripped me from the first page to the last.
Can't wait to read more.

Book 3 and what can I say I’m absolutely loving this series!
Great characters, the plots on point, it’s exciting, interesting, addictive and executed to perfection. This is how you do a police procedural. More please!

Book 3 Inspector Anjelica Henley series. I've read this book as a standalone not having read the previous 2 books in the series and it doesn't matter it can be read this way. A brilliant book that keeps you hooked from the very first page.
I'm afraid this wasn't for me. I just couldn't engage with the story line or any of the characters, and put it down half way through.
Andrew Streeter was convicted of the brutal murders of many young people, He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Now, many years later he has appealed his sentence. Evidence has emerged that point to a miscarriage of justice. When Streeter's lawyer is murdered, Inspector Anjelica Henley knows that she will find this case very difficult- especially as it is personal & it may point to her old boss, who is no longer alive, being corrupt.
This is the third book in the series. I enjoyed the first one & I don't know how I missed the second, but I was glad to read this one. The characters are interesting & the narrative keeps the reader interested & guessing. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
This is the second book I have read in the series and after the previous one I said that this was a great addition to the British crime genre. DI Henley and her team are tasked with reviewing and old case that was investigated by her previous boss and which she was also involved as a teenager giving evidence as a witness..The convicted alleged serial killer has always claimed innocence and after 25 years his case has been reviewed in his favour. Layers of lies and corruption are peeled away as the team search for the truth no matter what it may reveal about their late boss. The ending leaves something to lead into the next book as all good series do. I can heartily recommend this book.
Having read previously read the two books in the series, I knew what to expect and it did not disappoint.
When DCI Rhimes is accused of been corrupt, it sets off a chain of events, involving potential miscarriages of justice, corruption and of course a serial killer. An old case is reopened, and a new case is investigated, the main question being is it the same killer or just a copycat.
The book is full of plot twists, with a dark and engaging storyline.
Alongside the murder investigation, the book delves into Henley’s ongoing personal issues, the complicated relationship with Pellacia and Ramouter’s struggles with his wife. All of which adds further interest to the characters and forms a great read.
Looking forward to the next book in the instalment already.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers HQ for an advanced copy in exchange for a honest review.
4 stars.
Twenty-five years ago DCI Harry Rhimes arrested Andrew Streeter for the brutal murders of five people. Evidence was found in Streeter’s home, including his ‘kill list’ of victims. He was convicted of all five crimes and jailed. Now, his convictions are being overturned as new evidence has come to light to imply that the original case against him was invalid and that the investigation carried out was corrupt. DCI Rhimes is now deceased, so he is not able to defend himself. DI Henley is shocked, however, as Rhimes was her old boss and mentor on the force, and she refuses to believe he was a corrupt cop.
But when killings with the same MO start up again, Henley must investigate fully, and determine if Rhimes got it wrong all those years ago. Accidentally or intentionally. Henley sets her team to reopen the original murder cases, putting their personal feelings for Rhimes aside, as he is as much under investigation as the original murders. The team must investigate the original five murders, alongside the murders happening now, and do so fast, to prevent more deaths.
This is the third book in the DI Henley series. I have not read the first two books, so I feel I was missing out on the development and relationships between some characters and teammates. Otherwise, it works well as a stand-alone read. The team doesn’t believe the allegations of corruption but is researching the 1995 cases alongside the current murders. The storyline is split between the two investigations well and how the special investigation team is handling the complexities of both. The investigation is believable, with the impossible task faced at the start whittled down into a solvable case in a logical and yet creative manner, one which keeps you turning pages and not wanting to put the book down (hello 4 am, we said we wouldn’t do this again!).
The characters are very well written, with DI Henley in particular a very enjoyable person to follow. She is a good leader and a real person. Her best friend was one of the 1995 murder victims, and Rhimes was her boss before he retired, and passed away. We see how hard this case is for DI Henley, yet how conscientiously she is approaching it, determined to do right by all the victims and ensure that this time, the case is investigated to the fullest. The Specialist Unit has a brilliant approach to solving this case, and the pace of the story worked well to keep you engaged. It was dark, gripping and full of twists that kept you peering around every corner. Brilliant read!
*I received this book from NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.
This is book 3 in the series and I have not read the first two. I managed to read it as a standalone but I think I would have benefited from reading the first two in order. There is obviously some history between some characters that I felt a little left out of.
I’m still doubtful that our MC would be the one to deal with this case given her previous involvement but that aside I thought it was good. I got a little confused between characters but again I think if I’d read the first two it would be clearer. I’d definitely be interested in the next book in the series.
Many thanks to #NetGalley and #HQ for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
The Kill List is a fast paced ,roller coaster of a ride Police Procedural. DI Anjelica Henley is very likeable and the banter between her Team is very authentic. A Case from 25 years ago has to be reopened ,there is s serial killer out there who is sadistic and cruel and needs to be caught Though this is the third book in the series it is a good standalone .I can't wait to read the next book in the series .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.
The first thing I did after reading this book was bought the first two books in the Detective Inspector Henley series! Not sure how I missed this author. Thank you.
Loved this book about the Serial Killer called The Burier. I loved the Specialist Police Unit approach to solving the crime. The characters were great and I loved how they centred around the Detective. This was fast paced and dark in places. A great page turner that I couldn’t put down. It was dark and twisted and I couldn’t wait to find out how it ended.
This book is the third in this series
This is a D.I. Angelica Henley series
A good series to read
A good police procedural
Thanks NetGalley
Thoroughly enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the fully formed characters. Reading is so much more pleasurable when you care about the characters.; you can cheer or boo from the sidelines & feel fully invested in the story and the outcome.
This is a timely read about police investigations past & present. The crimes are grim and the characters are deeply human with all the grit & flaws that come with the human state.
A gripping read.
Was there a miscarriage of justice or is the real serial killer in jail awaiting his execution? Everyone thought so until there are another series of identical murders. Copycat killer or did they get it wrong from the start? A really good, gripping read that keeps you second guessing throughout
I really enjoyed this book! I loved seeing the SCU grow even closer together (especially Henley & Pellacia 🫶🏻) and to see them stand behind their old boss. The support this team offers each other, both personally and professionally, warms the heart.
There are 2 storylines taking place, along with the usual subplots. One is the investigation into the 1995 cases, which are now intrinsically linked to the present day murders. The other investigation, and one that personally challenges the SCU team, is the investigation into their old boss, Rhimes, and the allegations of him being corrupt. The team doesn't believe them, but the evidence is compelling. Matheson expertly links these investigations as the book develops. What feels chaotic and impossible to solve at the start, for both the reader and the team, perfectly fits together into place in the ‘bingo’ moment that readers of Matheson look forward to.
Henley is deeply linked to both cases; her best friend is one of the murder victims from 1995, and Rhimes made her the leader she is today. Can she compartmentalise her feelings, or will these cases, along with her tough home life, finally push her over the edge? The rawness of the emotions in this book make for an even more enjoyable read than generic thrillers. No character escapes Matheson’s deep dive into the difficulties of life and what is throws at you.
Great addition to the series, please start at the beginning it’s worth it!
Nice crime thriller that keeps you turning the page, the mixture of details of the crime and the personal lives of the staff involved make it relatable and I didn’t know what was coming.
I have not read any of the other books in the series but this did not matter as the story worked well on its own. The serious crimes unit and DI Angelica Hanley are called upon to reinvestigate an old serial killer case following an overturned conviction. A series of copycat killings then follow leading to an exciting cat and mouse storyline between the killer and the investigators. The story is well-written and suspenseful with good twists on the storyline.
