I enjoyed this book. I chose to read and review it because the description said it was based on history. I guess it is very loosely true but not exactly what I was expecting.
The story flowed fairly well and the characters were fairly well developed. The editing was done very well, there were no distracting errors which can ruin a perfectly good story. I did get a little bogged down towards the end. It was only semi-believable.
I give this a solid 3 out of 5 stars. It really should be 3.5 but most places don't allow for an extra half-star.
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction or stories about horses. It is listed as Christian but I would only claim it as a clean book. No bad language or sexual content.
I received a copy of this book through the Revell Reads program. All thoughts are my own and freely given.
This was a good story! The last 30% was absolutely riveting to the point that I could not put it down. However, the first 60% was just ok to the point that I nearly stopped reading because I didn't feel like the story was going anywhere. That being said, I did enjoy the characters and once the scenery changed, I loved this story. Recommend for anyone who enjoys World War II stories.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Every little girl who grew up reading Walter Farley's Black Stallion books, should add this one to her TBR! I was that girl, and this story, based on something that actually happened during WWII, had all the adventure that girl loved, along with beautiful horses.
Adia Kensington is an American working at the world renowned Janow Podlaski stables in Poland when Germany sets its sights on Poland. Caught between Germany and Russia, Adia is desperate to get the horses to safety, especially the stallion Lubor. He and his future offspring will be the foundation of the Polish horse bloodline, if she can just keep him safe. When her plan to evacuate the horses is stopped by the invaders, she is forced to throw her lot in with the Germans. At least they seem to want to keep the horses healthy, and off of anyone's dinner table! She has no idea that she will have to endure 6 years of Nazi occupation that will threaten her beloved horses almost daily.
Bret Conway is at Janow Podlaski as a reporter, at least that's his story. In reality, he is there to gather intelligence for the British and he's there to keep Adia safe. When she realizes his true mission, she offers to help. Her "friendship" with the German commander in charge of the stables lets her hear things useful to the Brits. Can Bret keep her safe when she insists on stepping in where she shouldn't?
I listened to this on my Libby app, and it felt like I was listening to radio theater at its finest. I didn't want to pause it - ever - until the story was done. I definitely enjoyed the story. Readers who enjoy WWII fiction will enjoy Until Our Time Comes. There's a gripping story and enough of a romance threaded through to keep all readers engaged.
Despite the vast number of books I have read about the World Wars, this is a story I had not come across...& it is a story which needed to be told.
It was both very tense & at the same time unputdownable : what a truly remarkable tale! Will we ever finish learning about the Wars, what people went through – there are so many different perspectives & experiences to discover. Every school should be teaching these real stories, so that no member of future generations can ever fathom causing such harm to others.
If you weren’t a particularly ‘horsey’ person, you will care deeply for them by the end of this book...
I will certainly be looking out for further volumes from this author : )
What a wonderful debut novel! I couldn't put it down. I loved learning about this slice of history and the efforts to save Arabian horses from the war for six years. American horse trainer Adia Kensington's dream is to be at the famous Janów Podlaski stables in Poland. She is there when the Germans and the Soviets invade at the start of WWII, and for the next several years, she and her horses are in constant danger. As are the sweet children she tries to help. British Bret Conway is in Poland as an undercover spy, who takes on the job of trying to keep Adia safe. I enjoyed the humor, friendships, and romance, mixed in with all the horrors of war.
I highly recommend Until Our Time Comes for lovers of historical fiction!
Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for allowing me to read a digital copy. All opinions are my own.
Put a horse on a book cover, and you immediately have my attention. Sometimes, this does not work in my favor. Until Our Time Comes by Nicole M. Miller did. I read Elizabeth Letts’ The Perfect Horse a number of years ago, which chronicles the rescue of the famous horses from Vienna’s Spanish Riding School. Until I read Miller’s novel, I had no idea a similar mission occurred at the Janów Podlaski Stud Farm in Poland with Polish Arabians. For being such a horse lover and a WWII history nerd, it surprised me to find that Until Our Time Comes was based on a true story. Though the book had its fault, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Nicole M. Miller produces next.
I could tell from the start that Miller knew horses. So many novels get things wrong, which often eliminates all credibility for me. I can’t read it without questioning every word. Terminology is incorrect, or horse behavior is inaccurately portrayed. Not the case with Until Our Time Comes. I never rolled my eyes, angered, or laughed at any horse-related error. If you’re a horse person like I am, you can dive into Miller’s novel without that worry over your head. I don’t often get to say books with horses get things right, so I must mention and highlight it now.
Adia Kensington has a heart for horses, and she is determined to save the equines of Janów Podlaski from the invading Nazis. Bret Conway is a British spy, working as a war correspondent. He finds Adia intriguing, but tragedy strikes before he can share a meal with her. When they are later reunited, Adia has not forgiven him. But as they work together to save the Polish Arabians Adia adores, love takes root between them and blossoms and grows over the span of Until Our Time Comes by Nicole M. Miller. It is never forced. Miller nurtures the relationship and lets it cultivate slowly. Never did I think Adia and Bret’s affection for each other moved too quickly.
Until Our Time Comes is more than just a romance. While easy to read with a steady flow, the book dives into the tension and high stakes the characters face. Nothing Adia, Bret, and their friends encounter is easy. They experience death, injury, questions, and loss. But they support each other, even when everything seems bleak. Miller breaks up the pressure with well-timed moments of humor and romance, and readers won’t be disappointed. With relatable, lovable characters and an attention-grabbing story, Until Our Time Comes by Nicole M. Miller is a stellar debut novel. I loved it. If you’re a fan of WWII historical fiction, horses, and romance, so will you.
This book takes an interesting point of view on World War II - a largely untold story of horses during wartime. Often the stories of the horses taken and used during previous wars are not told, or are found lacking in popularity among the general population - a true shame. The horses are why I requested the novel. I found the romance aspect a slight distraction from the true plot, but not a nuisance in the slightest. The Christian morals were a breath of fresh air.
Thank you to Revell, NetGalley, and of course, Ms. Miller for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This story is the perfect combination of historical fiction and romance.
Hitler was collecting the best Europe had to offer in art and antiquities. So no surprise he wanted the best horses that these same countries had to offer. So Hitler took the horses from the famous Janow Podlaski Stud Farm in Poland and from many other farms in the countries he took over.. This story was inspired by true events, which is my favorite kind of historical fiction.
This book is about the people that cared for these horses and tried to keep them safe from 1939 thru the end of WWII. While Hitler and his men had the horses they were relatively safe and well cared for. Hitler did not value the life of humans, but he did value these horses and so did the Germans and others that were supposed to care for them. But as the Germans realized their loss of the war was imminent, what was to become of these very valuable horses?
This book will encourage you to learn more about this amazing story and the people and horses involved. What makes this book special is the tension caused by war, rescues. escapes and long journeys. The faith, hope and love in the story that grab your heart. And that moment when the title finally comes to light.
✅ Christian WWII Romantic Fiction
✅ Set in Poland, 1939
✅ Fiercely protective MMC
✅ Endearing side-characters!
Wow - this story was amazing from beginning to end! Nicole M. Miller’s debut novel, Until Our Time Comes, transports you deep into WWII history from the eyes of those living in Poland. As we follow our MFC, Adia Kensington, we learn what the war was like through the eyes of this American horse trainer, transplanted in Poland throughout the war. The amount of research that went into this novel was substantial and well done! I do love horses but I admit, I am not necessarily a horse enthusiast - that didn’t matter when reading this novel. I learned to love the fiery Arabians right alongside Adia. Not once did I feel left out or clueless for the author did an amazing job in helping those of us who perhaps don’t know or understand horses.
The amount of mystery and intrigue in this novel was intense! This had everything you could want in a WWII novel - intriguing history, a beautiful slow-burn romance, heart-pounding action, and well-developed characters. Bret Conway, our MMC, was every part of the dashing British Intelligence agent you’d hope he would be. His fierce loyalty, to both his job and Adia and Ewan, were so endearing. As far as side characters go (does he count as a side character? lol), Ewan is one of my new favorites! My heart couldn’t help but fall for the rag-tag thief and his many escapades.
The outward faith elements were a little light - a bit of praying here and there, mostly when things were rough and bleak. The intrinsic Christian values we all hope to emulate were strong, however. Values and morals such as shepherding well what God has entrusted us with, putting others first, a general self-sacrificing nature, and laying down one's life for a friend (or stranger).
This novel was a page-turner from start to finish and I am honored to be given the chance to read it!
Thanks to the publisher's generosity, I was given a free advanced copy to read and review. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Until Our Time Comes is the first book I have read written by Nicole M. Miller. It was an easy read, rich in vocabulary and history. It has been a moment since I have read anything set during WWII and it was such a pleasure going back to one of my favorite time periods.
The character development was great. I loved getting to know Adia. Her kind heartedness towards the little orphan boy, Ewan., and her love for horses drew me right in. Bret being part of the British intelligence was the perfect combination for a novel. Spies, war, horses and romance, mixed with some great character development is enough to hook me in.
The setting was great. I enjoyed immersing myself in Poland during WWII. I enjoyed envisioning it all unfold. I have not personally read a lot of books set in Poland, so it was fun to visit. Europe is always a favorite book setting for my imagination.
The historical element was great. As I have already said, one of my favorite time periods, so I don’t have a lot of bad things to say about it.
The romance aspect was pretty good. Nothing to over the top. Kissing but nothing over the top. I appreciated the balance.
The Christian element was a little light, but still present. Point us to God in times of need and praying.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
I loved this one . It was a different take on a war novel . It tells how the show horses were treated during WWII. It was eye opening and I truly enjoyed this book

I have been sent a copy of Until Our Time Comes for review by Revell and Netgalley:
Adia Kensington is living her dream of working at the world-famous Janów Podlaski stables in Poland, where they breed the best Arabian horses. As the German army storms into her adopted country in 1939, her plans to bring Lubor to the US are derailed. She has no idea that this is just the beginning of a six-year occupation that Will threaten her beloved horses every step of the way.
Under the guise of a journalist, Bret Conway is gathering intelligence for the British at Janów Podlaski. The invading forces are eating, stealing, and eating 250 horses, which makes it more difficult to keep Adia safe. They will be tested physically, mentally, and emotionally, as well as in their faith in God, humanity, and each other.
I give Until Our Time Comes five out Of five stars!
Happy Reading!
Loved this book! I’ve tried to stay away from World War II books for awhile because things were feeling repetitive. The story of Adia & Brett and all of the Arabian horses was so interesting. I had never considered how something like the history of horse breeding would be impacted by the war and invasions of various countries. Adia is an American horse trainer, Brett a British spy. They work together to try to save hundreds of Arabian horses from falling into enemy hands, but their efforts are thwarted and plans must change. Each must stick to their respective duties, but neither can deny their growing feelings. The book spans several years, and it was masterfully done. I grew attached to the characters, including all the magnificent horses. I enjoyed the history in the book as well- I never knew anything about Germany’s plans to create a super horse, though it’s not surprising.
I highly recommend this book & would love to read this author again in the future.
Horses, WWII, and some romance. This book had all that and it was so enjoyable!
I've never read a story about people who risked their lives protecting horses during the war. That's one of the reasons why I love reading stories that take place during this time period. There's no limit to all the different aspects to who and what were affected by Nazi occupation.
Adia was a great heroine--strong and resilient. She was a great character to lead this story.
If you love horses and/or historical fiction, this one's for you!
Wow! I would not have thought this was a debut novel while reading it! I finished it in one reading! It was excellent. I loved learning more about WWII in Poland. This was written about true events and makes me think about the many people and stories that we don't know about. Their bravery and decisions to do what was right and stand up for people and animals in the ways that they could and still protect their lives are numerous. They are so inspiring! It helps to inspire me and give me the desire to help those around me and to stand for good and right.
Adia and Bret have a lot of challenges and losses that they face throughout the course of the story. I loved watching them work through those and grow in their friendship. They suffer losses and face heartbreak. But the friendships and lives they touch and help throughout the book were really great. Especially the surprise at the end. You're going to love it!
Their sweet romance story had a rocky start and bumps along the way but I loved seeing them grow closer together and trusting each other. Which of course helped the story progress. It was all very well developed.
I was very invested in the whole story; all of the characters, the concern and safety for the horses and for the soldiers, the townspeople and so many others in the story. I loved it all!!!
Content: Clean but does deal with war and battles and danger. Well written and done in a sensitive manner for the subject. Spies and soldiers and such.
I received a copy from the publisher, Revell, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading!!!
BREATHTAKING WWII ARABIAN HORSE RESCUE!!
Nicole M. Miller has recently released her debut novel, and I am a fan of her! Miller writes this epic tale drawn from actual events in WWII and tells of the attempted evacuation of 250 purebred Arabian horses from the famous Janów Podlaski stables in Poland. Miller has created an extraordinary cast of characters. The two main characters are American horse trainer Adia Kensington and Bret Conway, who are there under the guise of a news reporter. Still, his true mission is to gather intelligence for the British. That and keeping Adia safe, which is difficult to do as she insists they must evacuate these priceless horses to save them from being stolen, sold, or eaten by the invading forces – first the Germans and then the Russians! There were six long years of fighting for survival during the occupation. Adia and Bret were often separated because of the clandestine activities that usually took him straight to the front line of the war. Their love story is one for the ages! During those six years of separation, Bret did everything in his power to protect and provide for Adia and made up for lost time by helping her fulfill her lifelong dream of having the Arabians back in her stables in the U.S.
Nicole M. Miller has penned a brilliantly moving novel that makes readers feel like they are one of the characters facing escape, capture, resistance, survival tactics, and dependence on God to deliver them from the forces of evil threatening to capture and imprison them. I highly recommend this novel!!
Revell and NetGalley provided me with a complimentary copy of this novel. However, my opinions are entirely my own and uninfluenced.
Loosely based on historical events, this debut is set in Poland in 1939. Asia is a horse trainer at Janow Podlaski stables. As the German army draws closer she worries about the fate of the 250 Arabian horses in her care. They must evacuate to a safer place, which is no small fete. When she meets Bret she isn’t enamored with him, but as time goes on her love for him grows. With history, good character development and a bit of romance this was a good debut. The historic elements were the most interesting, but there was quite a bit of fiction mixed in. Thank you to Baker Books and Net Galley for an ARC of this book.
I loved this book. I found this book to be really interesting. I loved the complexity of the characters. World War II has always been a fascinating time period and this book brought to life an event I was not aware of with the Janow Podlaski stables in Poland. This story centers around Adia Kensington's love of horses. She is an American but is a trainer at the famous stables in Poland. When the war comes to Poland, Adia will do anything to keep the horses from harm and certain death. With the help of Bret, a British spy and several workers at the stables they do their best to fulfill this quest. But war comes to their front door. I don't want to write any spoilers, I will just say read this book! Thank you to NetGalley and Revell for the opportunity to read this book. Opinions are my own.
This is a book for
- Horse girls (and boys)
- Historical Fiction lovers
- Everyone
It’s a story about spies and resistance in WW2, which is good enough, but horses are a major part of it: and many of them are like characters in themselves. As they should be. Also, of course, you will care about and root for the four-legged characters as much as the people.
It also has a dashing, traumatized hero and a smart, savvy horse lady heroine as well as a naught scampy kid and some other complex characters on both sides.
So, all in all, a great read with a historical backdrop that was interesting and unique at the same time.
Thanks to Revell for approving me for this title on Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, or any review and all opinions expressed are my own.
I've read numerous stories about WWII, but none like this. This debut novel was fascinating, introducing me to yet another aspect of WWII that I was previously unaware of. Adia, an American horse trainer, was caught in Poland at an Arabian horse breeding farm. When forced to flee, Adia refuses to leave the horse and soon finds herself in constant danger while protecting the horses as Germany invades. Their objective is to create the ideal super horse.
I appreciated how the author included information in the author’s notes about events that were based on true events. If you love horses and enjoy real-life WWII stories, this is the book for you and your book club.
