Another great read by a beloved Canadian author. Making the setting take place on a boat amped the stakes up! The pace was quick and the characters were untrustworthy.
This was definitely a fun popcorn thriller type of read. I had fun reading it. The final twist though just made it highly unbelievable for me and that is mostly what ruined it for me.
After reading this book I now know what the term The Offing means.
Well Roz Nay has done it again! She throws in a twist that you did not expect! Wow what a book! I have to say her books are slow to start but I know when they pick up there is no putting them down. The book did not disappoint!
Ivy and Regan are running away from their past when they travel to Australia. There they meet up with Christopher, Lila and Desh. Then their adventures really begin. I am leaving it there because I want to keep it spoiler free. You will just have to read the book to find out what happens
I have finally read a book from Roz Nay and just like I anticipated, it was incredible! The Offing in quick, rapid-fire thoughts.
These characters and the plot are crafted together in a meticulous, yet effortless way.
This ending sneaks up so perfectly, and one hundred percent got me!
The characters all fit together like one big giant puzzle, slotted together and aligning exactly how they should for the whole story to work!
Devout friendships, untrustworthy strangers, haunting past relationships and a needed silver lining.
The nautical setting was both beautiful and terrifying!
I can't wait to read more from Nay!
Thank you NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada and Viking for the complimentary copy to read and review.
I unfortunately didn’t get all the way through this novel before it expired. I found it a bit slow for my liking, which is why I kept putting it down. That being said, I plan to pick it up in stores as I have enjoyed Roz Nay’s books in the past.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada. Apologies I didn’t finish.
Wow! What a page turner, I couldn’t put it down. This is totally different to what I normally read with the setting and the plot. It was so good with all the twists and turns throughout and the fabulous ending that you really don’t expect. The characters were great, the story itself was so enjoyable and suspenseful and the style of writing was perfect.
This is the first book that I have ever read by this author and I’m so looking forward to the next one that comes out. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that likes to read psychological thrillers.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
I really love Nays writing.
Regan and Ivy are in Australia, looking for adventure and to put miles between Ivy and her ex boyfriend, her professor at NYU. They jump at the opportunity to join a small crew aboard a boat to put even more space between them as they find out the ex is in Australia. The boat crew, consisting of them, the cook and the father and daughter duo sailing, begin their journey. But is being trapped on a boat with strangers the better option than running into an ex?
Unsure who to trust, even amongst themselves, tensions run high and questions begin to pop up everywhere. Will Regan and Ivy make it back to shore, or back home?
I really enjoyed the flow. Nay writes stories that are inviting, and captivating. Can’t wait to read more by them.
I've read all of Roz Nay's books and I think this is her most suspenseful and twisty yet! I could not figure out AT ALL who to trust in this book! This book has a cast of characters who all have a little bit of baggage to their lives and the plot mostly plays out on a small boat sailing along the Australian coast. As all of the layers of the story unfolded, I continually tried to get a grasp on how it would end and instead I was completely surprised and didn't see it coming at all.
This is an utterly bingeable summer thriller - I won't say too much else about it because it's best enjoyed without significant details. I definitely recommend it and I enjoyed the audio narration too (which I absorbed on publication day).
I would also recommend having a friend on hand who has already read this so that you can text them endlessly and discuss!
The Offing by Roz Nay is only my second read from this author, and I can honestly say that I was completely blown away. I love a great mystery, and when an exotic setting is thrown in, all the better. This one ticks all of the boxes.
Ivy and Regan are on holiday in Australia. Ivy is still smarting from a bad breakup, and the two friends are both looking for a temporary escape from reality. An opportunity to crew on a yacht for a man and his young daughter seems like a perfect opportunity to have a bit of excitement while at the same time pocketing a bit of cash, and the girls leap at the chance despite their inexperience. But everyone on board seems to have their own reason for being there, and not all are completely honest and will do whatever it takes to protect their own secrets.
This is, essentially, a closed room mystery that happens to take place on a yacht in the waters off the coast of Australia. The unique setting adds such an element of suspense and feeling of potential danger, and I was kept on edge from beginning to end. If you are looking for a thoroughly gripping and propulsive read that is nearly impossible to put down, this is it. So far, my favourite read of the summer.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for an ARC.
You know what I love about books? When they totally surprise you and leave your mind spinning. I will admit (even though I don't want to) that I felt this book moved quite slow, with nothing exciting happening and continuously wondered where it was going and when it was going to take off - because we know Roz Nay and know she loves doing that to us.
That is ultimately why I continued with this book, because I trusted Roz to destroy my psyche. The last 25% of this book was just ridiculous. With every reveal, I kept asking myself 'what in the world is happening'.
I will always love a good “hold your secrets close” thriller, and Roz Nay knows how to write them. Her latest book, The Offing, takes the reader to the ocean off Australia, to a small sailboat whose occupants are trying to outrun their pasts. And some of these secrets are deep!
Put one man and his daughter on a boat. Add in a crew of strangers - two young American women who have been friends for a few years who will work as crew, and a young American guy who will cook and help out. Put them on the ocean, heading into a notorious shipping channel close to storm season, Throw in some secrets, a few twists, and a mysterious black sailboat they keep encountering, all in the cramped quarters of a boat, and watch as minds swirl and tensions mount. Hard to discuss this one in any detail without dropping spoilers, but trust that you will be drawn in quickly, and reluctant to set it down!
Roz has provided perfect pacing, well-timed twists, and a cast of characters that will keep you guessing. This would be a perfect beach read.
Many thanks to Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for providing me with a gifted eARC, in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Roz! You’ve done it again. This kept me on the edge of my seat, needing just one more chapter each night. Every book you write seems to get better and better.
Well Roz Nay you fooled me not once but at least twice and that’s not that easy ( if I do say so myself !)
What a ride - so many twists and turns I was starting to get dizzy but oh so good 😊
4.5 ⭐️
Another dark, twisty travel thriller from one of my VERY favs!! Reading a Roz Nay book is always an adventure and highly entertaining from start to finish! This one takes place on board a sail boat as two friends take temp jobs as watchmen joining the crew of a father and daughter duo with secrets.
I loved the flash forward AND backward scenes in this story!! The police interview snippets from the aftermath of the story events kept me in suspense wanting to see how things would turn out and the professor/student affair from the past was an unexpected turn that comes full circle in the most surprising ways.
Great on audio and perfect for fans of books like Ashley Audrain's The push. Beware there is some dismemberment (off page and not graphic) and some disturbing scenes involving a minor. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review! This would make an EXCELLENT beach read for the summer and I can't recommend it enough!
Roz... a word?
Some people need to sleep. And The Offing made me (MADE ME) stay up until 0300 more than once while reading it!
All four Roz Nay books are on my favourites shelf. But The Offing has taken the new top spot for my favourite of hers.
This is her second travel thriller, the story of university friends Ivy and Regan. They are making their way through Australia's hostel scene when the opportunity to be crew members aboard the 'Alone At Last' comes available.
From interview to setting sail, it's mere hours until they join Christopher, his daughter Lila, and chef Desh for travel across the ocean.
Ivy is leaving behind a dangerous relationship, but is what she's leaving worse than what they're sailing toward?
There are some darker scenes in The Offing than her previous books, and I couldn't get enough! Twists that I must not start on about because I can't be trusted to keep my yapper shut. Be aware, I audibly gasped at one point.
Just get it. Released today!
Roz Nay is a favourite author of mine but even by those standards she blew it out the park on this one!
I adore a travel thriller and I find no one does them better than Roz!
The Offing sees us following NYU students Ivy and Regan, as they embark on an Oz adventure, taking jobs as crew members on a families small yacht. Ivy is escaping her ex after a nasty break up and we soon find that not everything is as it seems there, or on the boat and that more than just Ivy might have a reason to want to hide at sea.
Eeek it was so good! And no spoilers but that twist…..perfection! Such a fun summer thriller!
Roz Nay has taken me on a wild and twisty adventure on board a small yacht off the coast of Australia. I felt like a voyeur while reading The Offing. Roz Nay writes so vividly that I felt as though I was physically watching this twisty tension filled thriller unfold.
The Offing follows Ivy and Regan on a month long trip to Australia. For Regan, it’s a fun break from her job as a model in the US. For Ivy it’s a chance to escape her horrible reality back at NYU. Especially her toxic creepy ex-boyfriend Thatcher. But somehow he’s figured out where Ivy is and is coming to hunt her down. Desperate to evade Thatcher, Ivy and Regan get jobs as crew members on a small yacht. They hope a few weeks at sea will get Thatcher off Ivy’s tail. Their hopes are high as they set off to sea with a father-daughter duo and a handsome young chef. What could possibly go wrong?
I’m not going to lie this book was creepy intense! But in the best way possible. Roz Nay is a master of writing spine tingly, nerve wracking thrillers. It was impossible for me to put The Offing down, finishing it in less than a day.
The Offing is a perfect summer thriller. Hands down a 5 ⭐️ read. Thank you so much Penguin Random House Canada, NetGalley and Roz Nay for my arc of this phenomenal travel thriller.

First of all - I had no clue what “the offing” even meant and now I do thanks to this book. 😂
This was a wild ride, full of young people making terrible decisions. Was I shaking my head at them while realizing I also made reckless decisions at that age? Yup.
I loved the Australian setting and the stuck on a boat circumstances.
The ending was fantastic and shocked me. I’m still impressed by the twists.
I loved hearing Roz talk about this book on the panel and specifically how readers have made it tougher to pull off huge twists - she nailed it!
The Offing is a scandalously delicious travel thriller that DE-LIVERS on the high octane intensity and creeping dread that has you by the shirt collars from page one.
I think this might be the best one from @roznay yet. Truly every element of this plot is perfectly crafted - the claustrophobic atmosphere of the yacht, the cast of “who can you trust” characters, the snippets of police interviews throughout dropping clues like cookie crumbs, the secrets creeping through each crack, teasing you with another twist you can’t see coming. I sat down and devoured this in one morning, as there was no way I wasn’t going to find out where this all ended - and WHAT. AN. ENDING.
Absolutely no spoilers but for the love of your reading list, get ahold of this book for summer. Part thriller, part mystery, all drama and you will be so happy you didn’t miss the fun. It is a MUST HAVE, I promise you.
Many thanks to @penguinrandomca for the copy
I love a vacation thriller and while I did find myself lamenting about The Youths Making Bad Choices, I was hooked throughout. The sense of unease set against such a beautiful backdrop makes for an interesting emotional contrast, and the twists keep comin'!
