Roz Nay has done it again! The Offing is a great captivating thriller with a foreboding sense of unease threaded throughout. Taking place largely at sea off the coast of Australia, I was drawn into this novel from the outset as the tension kept ratcheting up. The author’s writing is crisp, the chapters are short and the pacing is very good. There are some intense, suspenseful scenes and an expected twist near the end. It was so good!
I highly recommend this thriller and wish it so much success!!
Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada and Viking for this complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
I will post to my book IG this Friday and to Amazon on pub day.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to read this novel. This was a fast and surprising story to enjoy in one day. I was wrong each time; I thought I could predict where it was going. It has family pull, friendships put to the test, romance, and so much drama! I highly recommend this book to everyone. Thank you, Roz!
Roz Nay does it again! This has to be her most captivating thriller to date. Two friends, running away from the choices of their past travel to Australia. Neither has been forthcoming about what they are running from. In a decision to protect themselves, they take the risky job of crew on a small sailboat. What seemed like a move for safety puts them directly in the path of danger. But where is the danger coming from?
This was full of a cast of shady characters, and a few twists and turns that were hard to see coming. Add the danger of the oceans off the coast of Australia full of other dangers such as sharks and crocodiles and you have a truly terrifying tale.
This was a total page turner and I didn't guess the ending at all.
Ivy is not in a good head space after her recent breakup. She and her best friend, Regan, decide to go on a trip to Australia to forget about things. The girls see an ad seeking crew members for a private luxury yacht. Even though they have no experience, Ivy is desperate to escape her ex-boyfriend. Ivy and Regan successfully land the job. They will be crew members on the yacht with the captain and his 11-year old daughter, as well as a handsome chef. Soon after setting sail, things take a negative turn. Are the girls just being paranoid? Or is something larger at play?
I knew I had to read this one - I LOVE vacation thrillers. This can often be an overdone genre, but Roz Nay did an excellent job at creating a unique plot. There are SO many twists and turns - I was actually shocked at the "big twist" . I did not see it coming! This is pretty rare for me as I read A LOT of thrillers. It was hard to figure out who to trust, which helped keep the suspense high until the very end.
I honestly loved everything about this book - the setting and corresponding imagery, the characters, and the writing style. I was hooked from the very first page and could not put this one down. It is twisted and deliciously dark. The perfect summer thriller!

Something about Nay’s writing just speaks to me and I’m always instantly immersed in her writing! This was no different, it’s fast paced and unique. I loved it all happening in a boat in a beautiful setting. Definitely recommend.
First, thank you to NetGalley, author Roz Nay and Penguin Random House Canada publishing for the ARC of this book.
I absolutely loved it from the first page. The fact it took place on a boat was a nice change, different is good. The storyline and writing was very well done. I learned some nautical terms and felt the authors way of describing these terms to readers who may not know them was also very well done.
The book was very descriptive to the point that I could picture the book, the characters and the locations they visited. The characters were very well developed and it was refreshing to see them grow throughout the book.
While I did figure out the ‘person’ causing all the issues there were many twists and turns I never saw coming. Many times I just had to keep reading to see what would come next.
This was my first book by this author but I will absolutely read more.
A solid 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ in my opinion. Highly recommend to others.
Roz Nay is back to take us on a wild and twisty ride. Best friends Ivy and Regan are vacationing in Australia and are now on the run from Ivy's past. When the chance to crew on a yacht for Christopher and daughter Lila arises it seems like the perfect opportunity to get off the grid and get away. But not everything is as it seems. Have they actually run right into the lions den?
This is a great atmospheric thriller full of shady characters that keeps your suspicions up and you guessing. I loved that I had no idea where I was going and managed to still be surprised, which is rare anymore for me with thrillers. It was a total bingeable read perfect for summer thriller lovers. Especially if you prefer your beach reads with a side of death and mystery.
Don't let this one miss your TBR list! 4.5 stars1
An excellent thriller unravelling the tale of two young American women, friends for life, and their harrowing trip to Far North Queensland Australia - a trip of a lifetime and one that is also driven by secrets - facts hidden that will in fact come to change the entire complexion of the journey, pitting both main protagonists on an unrelenting collision course with danger.
When Ivy McGill, a somewhat insecure NYU college student and our first-person narrator, hooks up inappropriately into what becomes a long term relationship with someone she does not really know at all, her life suddenly becomes a desperate struggle for escape. And escape she seeks, as far away as Australia, and the waters beyond, when she signs up to crew on the sailboat of a strangely private father/daughter pair, accompanied by their gorgeous and mysterious new chef, in what Ivy hopes will be a freeing (and perhaps romantically pleasurable) anonymous hiatus.
Accompanied by her friend Regan Kemp, a beautiful sharp-tongued model who will stand by Ivy, and what she believes to be right, whatever the cost, the girls diversion quickly descends into a terrifying interlude of sea and storm and all-around confusion, in which no-one is whom they seem at all, peril lurks around every salt-encrusted doorway, and the basic survival of both (or even, either) girl is tantalizingly made questionable by the authors addition of a cleverly ambiguous future-time subplot involving detectives and a grisly crime.
I loved this book - my second read, both a five-star, by this talented author - a nonstop literary ride, extremely well-crafted, and thick with tension and atmosphere. This chaotic swirl of questions, drama and suspense held my attention rapt, topped only by a terrific dazzler of an ending that this reader absolutely did not see coming.
A great big thank you to #Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada and Roz Nay for allowing me to read this before publication for my review.
This book was incredible! Had me hooked immediately, I couldn’t read the pages fast enough. There was so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. The characters were amazingly developed. We are constantly learning new things about them and the layers thicken with each encounter.
I like how tidbits of the investigation were scattered throughout the story giving us an idea of what to expect coming up.
This author vividly describes the scene making you feel like you’re right there on the boat with them. This is a first read from this author but will not be the last. This book was very well written from beginning to end and had so much action. Each story line came together and nothing felt rushed or out of place.

The Offing is the newest thriller from Roz Nay. In typical Roz fashion, I loved the scenery description and settings. This is a quick twisty ride perfect for a summer outdoor read!
I absolutely loved this book, it had a locked room feel to it which i loved. I loved the writing style, the location and the crux of the novel the horrendous professor on the tail of the girls which felt really quite scary.
The boat with father and daughter and the chef and their own stories was inspired and it came together which such style and skill, I cannot praise this book enough, really absorbing, I read it in just over a weekend, I could not put it down.
Several reviews and the synopsis set it up as a fast paced thriller, unfortunately I don't think it ever quite got there.
It started out quite well, the premise was promising and the general setting was intriguing. However, it very quickly turned frustrating and repetitive watching the characters interact.
I don't think it's spoiler to say, everyone is running from something but with that in mind, every choice the main character makes is incomprehensible.
For some reason the first person POV and writing style stood out and felt very disjointed, Ivy CONSTANTLY went back and forth on how she viewed the other characters. Not subtle growth over time but gigantic bipolar swings on whether or not she trusted them. Her decision making process also took me out of the story, if you're being chased and don't feel safe in your current environment - burning crucial evidence is not the right decision.
Some potential in this one but didn't come together for me.
I’ve had my eye on this book for months now, and I’m so grateful I got the opportunity to read an advance copy!
The first half or so of this book was completely enthralling. I was hooked from the very beginning. I thought the characters were interesting, the friendship between the girls was realistically imperfect, and I really enjoyed the setting for this book. I was constantly questioning who to trust and what really was going on.
Things started to get a little bit less realistic, and a little more theatrical toward the end. I can totally get behind a popcorn thriller but the tone of the book kind of shifted for me when the plot twists were revealed, and I found myself disappointed in the direction the book went.
This was a really entertaining and fast paced book. I binged it quickly and enjoyed it quite a bit, overall.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the gifted advance copy of this book!
4.5 STARS - Roz Nay is back with a new tension-filled, dark and twisty thriller!
Set in the beauty and natural danger of the north Australian Queensland coast, the story centres around Ivy, a young woman who needs to escape from a relationship gone horribly wrong. With her free-spirited best friend Regan, Ivy travels to Australia for a month and the duo decide to work as crewmembers for a boat owned by a father and his 11-year-old daughter. Will Ivy's past come back to haunt her? Why is there an eerie vibe on the boat and why does everyone seem to have secrets?
Readers will enjoy this fast-paced and tense thriller that has a locked room feel. Nay slowly and temptingly reveals the secrets and lies of her characters and as suspicion and tension grow, readers will be unsure of who to trust in this delightfully dark and twisty cat-and-mouse game set at sea. Reader beware: This well-paced story has many red herrings that will entice you to read 'just one more chapter' and keep you up reading well past your bedtime.
Don't miss this wildly entertaining read when it hits stores on May 28th from Penguin Random House (or preorder your copy today).
Disclaimer: Thanks to Viking Books for the complimentary digital advanced copy of this book which was given in exchange for my honest review.
I was thrilled when I saw that Roz Nay has set her new thriller in Australia 🇦🇺 You do see that very often from international writers. Set in far North Queensland, The Offing was wild and intense ride on the sea, where sharks and crocodiles are the least of their problems. 2 young American backpackers are escaping and decide to go work on a boat, with a good looking kitchen hand and a father and daughter who are hiding their own secrets.
This book is nuts, in the good way!! You won’t know what or who to believe as they travel up the coast and heading to Darwin. It is a tough book to put down so be warned. Each chapter ending will leave you wanting more. Such a fun but dark and scary read.
Thanks so much to Penguin Random House Canada for my early copy of this book to read. Publishes on May 28th.
I unfortunately found this slow, frustrating and forgettable. The Offing is billed as the story of two young women who stumble into a dangerous situation on a small yacht sailing in the waters around Australia. Roz Nay writes well, and I liked the depiction of the four central characters: the relationship between the female protagonists, Ivy and Regan, is well-drawn, and she also writes the father who employs them to work on the yacht and a third male crew member convincingly. But Nay fails to stoke tension despite a promising backstory and Ivy's increasing uncertainty about what they've got themselves into, and the twist at the end is both completely silly and unnecessary. There are many better thrillers set on boats: I'd recommend Cameron Ward's A Stranger on Board, Catherine Cooper's The Cruise or (most strongly) Ruth Ware's The Woman in Cabin 10. 2.5 stars.
This one gets 5 stars from me for the thrilling storyline, the twists and turns galore and for the amazing atmosphere. I love ocean themed stories. This one kept me guessing till the very end. What a twist
This starts off strong and stays solid throughout. The characters are unique and well done. This gave me actual chills many times
I’ve read 3 other Roz Nay novels and immediately requested an ARC of The Offing. Historically I’ve really enjoyed Nay’s books and writing style.
The Offing was an atmospheric read. Two American college girls travel Australia and take a job on a sailboat with a dad and his 11-year old daughter.
Everyone is running from something.
The main character was impossibly naive and incredibly infuriating. There’s a level of suspending belief required for all thrillers but this one was beyond my threshold. There was also a *twist* that I absolutely despise in a book and can’t get behind.
I’m disappointed to give this one a poor rating and will absolutely be picking up whatever Nay writes next.

A father and his young daughter are looking for help on their boat which is going to sail around the islands off Australia. They pick up two young women, best friends from the US, who are cautiously hesitant but ready to escape with an adventure aboard a boat. Once they have a chef to round out the “help”, they set sail…. The key being, are they running from someone creepy or running to something creepy.
I’m going to say very little about this one except to say that it was a binge book. One that is character development perfection on one of the MC that makes you want to shake the stupidity out of her head. 😂
Suspect them all. Because I’m gonna bet you have no idea where this boat is sailing, nor how many bodies it’ll pick up next.
I must admit I didn't particularly like the plot in terms of the who and why. It was a little more twisted or triggering than I like. But it was a fleeting part of the whole and I really enjoyed the whole and the telling of the what. It was one of those where all of the characters have secrets, so I was continuously changing my opinions yet still did not even suspect the actual perpetrator at all. I loved the setting too which obviously made for the perfect closed room (or boat) and compulsive thriller.
