Date with Destiny - Lucy Vine
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another book filled with Lucy Vine’s cheeky charm, humour and wit.
We follow Ginny as she embarks on her 32nd year, one that she’s been dreading after a psychic gave her some predictions to watch out for.
This follows a journey of self discovery, friendships and love and does so it that unique way that Vine does where it feels like a friend recounting a story to you.
If you live Bristish humour, sarcasm, great one liners and some romance…this one is for you.
Again, Lucy Vine proves why I will always pick up something she writes 😁
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
"The trouble with spending half your life with six psychic predictions hanging over your head is that your friends never let you forget about it."
Lucy Vine just writes books that girls want to read — they’re full of real women, beautiful friendships, and such relatable chaos that makes it feel like it could’ve happened to you or your friends.
I fell in love with Ginny right away - her humour, her wit, her slightly chaotic energy, her brutally honest awkwardness and the way she doesn’t really believe in psychics but can’t help but wonder if these silly predictions could mean something. Her narration was fabulous, so easy to read in such a casual, conversational tone that felt like a friend telling us a story. The supporting cast of characters were beautiful too, amazing women with stunning, complex and loving relationships that just made me smile.
There’s some slow burning romance, a lot of self discovery, family drama and a dose of silly fun as we go through Ginny’s weirdest year on the planet yet, moving along at a brilliant pace that kept me hooked - bringing some very real feelings and dotting in some little romcom, storybook chaos along the way for something that was just so much fun.
A joyous story about love in all its forms and another magnificent release from Lucy Vine.
This one follows Ginny who's been given six predictions about her life, including when she's going to meet her soulmate. The only problem is she's already getting married. This was full of fun and humour but the characters didn't quite work for me. I found everyone right on the border of endearing and frustrating. Not giving any spoilers about love interests but I also didn't feel the spark where I should have. Nevertheless Lucy Vine certainly has a specific voice and people who love her work should find this one fun.
What a lovely, georgus, heart - warming book from Lucy Vine - it felt like reading her first novels. Actually, I had a feeling that I'm reading Lindsay Kelk, this book was such light - hearted and filled with genuine humour.
Sure, there were moments that I didn't love so much, that felt, let's say, over - the - top and oh - so - convenient, and also after ditching the destiny curve the book started to feel a bit too forced, bot overall it was really a great book. The characters were really well written, they were sometimes truly annoying and their actions made me want to bang my head on the wall, however I like the way Ginny and her mother and sister were forced to take to find themselves and discover what it is that makes them happy in life. I especially liked the angle with the girls power, the women surrounding Ginny and how much they supported each other.
Under all the lightheartedness there are some issues hidden and some lessons to be learnt and the author has written them very skilfully, not overwhelming the readers. There is much more than just a rom - com to it and I liked it.
A fantastic, funny and easy read. I loved every second of this book. The perfect weekend escape.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for a review.
I love Lucy Vine's books as they are filled with humour and fun. This is a light read and had those laugh out loud moments that you expect from Lucy's writing. A fun read.
I absolutely loved this book. It’s funny and really easy to read. I read this from start to finish in a day it was that good. Will definitely read more from this author.
For laugh out loud funny books, I always turn to Lucy’s novels. She has such a gift for bringing lightheartedness to her characters, and humour that bubbles throughout. Her latest novel is no different, though the main character, Ginny, is pretending she doesn’t have a lot to worry about. Turning 32, she remembers vividly the predictions made by a psychic when she was 16 – three good, three bad. It doesn’t sound so bad on the surface, and quite vague, but one – meeting her soulmate – isn’t ideal considering she’s getting married in a month. With her closest friends and family, Ginny must navigate her 32nd year and all that it brings. Like the predictions, well, predicted, it’ll be a mixed bag of positive and negative events but done in Lucy’s quintessentially comedic way.
I was excited to read this book and sadly I was let down. I felt that it was rushed and I couldn't really connect with the main character Ginny. It also seemed to randomly jump scenes at times and this made the plot hard to follow. I also felt that it was a little bit too predictable and the ending of the book was really rushed.
There's some really funny lines in Date with Destiny, and it's an easy read.
I've enjoyed Lucy's previous books, but I did feel like the author was on auto-pilot with this one. It didn't feel like the '6 predictions' hook was enough to propel the story, and I struggled to finish it. There were too many characters for me, and I think that meant the focus on Ginny was lost. I didn't really get a sense of who she was or what she wanted - it is interesting to have an introvert as a MC, but that does mean they're not going to be super-proactive or outwardly compelling.
The cover and title make this look like a rom-com, but really it's more introspective than that.
All in all, it did feel a bit rushed and perhaps you could tell that the author wasn't really into this book as much as previous efforts.
I loved this book, the plot was new to me and exciting especially as the predictions start to become true.
I loved this! The concept was really fun and I enjoyed following Ginny as her predictions seemingly started to come true.
I really like Lucy Vine's writing style, and the characters were all wonderfully realistic. I loved the scenes in the jewellery shop and enjoyed reading about all the proposals. I love love!
The epilogue had me laughing out loud, brilliant!
Overall I would absolutely recommend this book, it was great fun to read.
When Ginny was 16, a fortune teller made six predictions that will come to pass once she turns 32. When those predictions seemingly start to come true one by one, Ginny is left dealing with the aftermath and trying to take the reins of her own life.
This was my first read by this author and it was an utter delight! I initially thought the book would be infused with magical realism, but I actually preferred the path the author has taken. It is much more a debate of predetermined faith vs. free will, questioning how much control we have over our own life. Ginny was such a well-rounded and relatable character; an introvert who has a hard time standing up for herself, steamrolled by her overbearing mother and at times somewhat passive in letting life just happen to her. It was a joy to follow her journey and I especially enjoyed the friendship and support system Ginny had (we all need a friend like Myfanwy in our life!) The book was genuinely funny with the epilogue being pure perfection that actually made me laugh out loud.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the ARC.
