From Good Reads:
Book 2 absolutely does not disappoint.
Jericho is an unforgettable character with .. a varied past ... and a talent for getting into trouble
Funfairs, Superstitions, Gangsters and Murder mix wonderfully. Fast paced and twisty.
Looking forward to next
Jerichos Dead is the second book in the Scott Jericho series by William Hussey.
In short, when a vicious serial killer targeting fortune tellers and psychics, targets someone close to him, Jericho inserts himself into the police investigation. And if his recent experience in Bradbury End had taught Jericho anything, the unlikeliest of suspects sometimes turn out to be the most depraved killers!
William Hussey has done it again, Jerichos Dead is another tense, chilling thriller…it’s a chaotic merry go round ride at the funfair which reels you in and never lets go. Great original series, bring on book 3!
Big thanks to William Hussey, Bonnier Books UK and NetGalley for this eARC which I chose to read in return for my honest review.
There's a thrill in discovering a book that's part of a series, promising a reunion with characters you want to spend more time with. This was my experience when I started reading Killing Jericho and, soon after, the sequel, Jericho's Dead. In these books, we delve into the life of Scott Jericho, a troubled and flawed character who is also a traveller and ex-police detective - an unusual combination.
As someone who grew up by the seaside, the allure of the fair is strong. Within the grit and glitz of the fairground, we meet Scott for the first time. He has to get his life back on track when he is pulled into unravelling a series of gruesome murders and confronting a past nemesis. After the thrill ride of the chase, the ending was totally unexpected, as was the rationale for the murders, and I was hooked and keen for more.
The second book, Jericho's Dead, finds Scott investigating murders within the psychic world after a fortune teller he is close to is found dead. William Hussey had me at Halloween and fortune tellers and I was once again following in Scott's footsteps as he unravelled the mystery of these deaths and who was behind them.
I can't wait for book 3. I love a character I can get behind, and Scott Jericho is definitely that man. I'm excited to find out where William Hussey will take us next.
Jericho’s Dead is a follow up to Killing Jericho, with ex-police detective Scott Jericho, a gay, Oxbridge educated man from the travelling community, finding himself investigating a serial killer who is targeting mediums and psychics. This series has a strong cast of interesting characters and William Hussey has the ability to convey the energy and atmosphere of the fairground community highly effectively. A worthy follow-up to the first book in the series and an appetiser for more to come. This would make a great TV series.
With thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy
After really enjoying the first book in the series I was intrigued to see where the second would take Scott Jericho - ex CID/ convict now living back with his traveller family on Jericho's funfair.
Jericho is an intriguing and increasingly well developed character and, even though serial killer themes are not my usual sub genre of crime these days I feel invested enough in the character and the author's writing style to see where this one would go.
Initially the book looks as if it might be going down a more supernatural route than its' predecessor: as a killer seems to be focusing on mediums and psychics.
A second series novel is always tricky in terms of the amount of detail and method the author uses to cover what happened in the first novel and William Hussey manages it well - not only moving things along but dangling plenty of strings for future books.
This is a strong series two books in and there's a strong enough set of characters here that the author could take it in any direction of crime stories. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Oh my, what a read this was. I can safely say that it has made one of my top reads for 2024 and I look forward to Jericho Book 3.
Scott Jericho is such n intriguing character that it's almost impossible to put the book down. I read this in two sittings and the pages just turned themselves.
It's very refreshing to have a main protagonist from an under-represented group and being both from the travelling community and gay, Scott Jericho is a welcome addition to the crime fiction world. He is beautifully drawn - flawed, strong, vulnerable, loyal, filled with rage, intelligent, charismatic.... need I go on.
As with the previous book in the series, Jericho's Dead is a good old fashioned puzzle but set very firmly in a contemporary UK. The clues are dropped at just the right frequency and the different strands are interwoven seamlessly.
The right balance of emotional intelligence, action, tension and puzzles. I loved it 5* from me
This is an excellent series, fast paced and featuring an original and flawed main characters. It's gritty, violent and gripping. The type of story you love and cannot stop even when you think it's a bit too much.
Good plot and character development, excellent storytelling.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
William Hussey returns to the gloriously brutal world of Scott Jericho with "Jericho's Dead," the follow-up to 2023's excellent "Killing Jericho." Right from the off, Hussey wastes no time in throwing us (and Scott) back to the wolves; a brutal series of murders, a conspiracy involving fortune tellers and a figure from the past all play key roles in making this second Jericho novel even more of a thrill ride than the first.
Scott Jericho is a flawed hero; a former police officer pulled back into the sleuthing game by circumstance. Hussey has crafted an incredible three-dimensional protagonist who feels all too real in the best possible way.
The central mystery in "Jericho's Dead" unfolds at a breakneck pace with relentless twists and turns that keep the solution just out of reach for the duration. When the ending comes, it hits hard and fits firmly in the world Hussey has created. The threads left dangling as we (hopefully) head towards a third novel in the series.
There is a dark, looming presence over this novel in the form of the first novel's twist-reveal villain (who I won't name here because, y'know, spoilers) but somehow Hussey makes this figure even more intimidating with far less page-time. This character, coupled with the threatening new antagonist from Scott's past, offer a delicious tension that never seems to go away. If Hussey keeps this up, the future of the series will be dark - oh, so dark.
Killing Jericho , William Hussey's brilliant crime thriller that preceded this one, had me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it and it's troubled main protagonist Scott Jericho has taken up a permanent spot in my head so I was eager to read Jericho's Dead and waited until I had time to read it all at once because I knew I wouldn't want to put it down - and boy was I right about that! I love the setting of the books - a travelling show - and the author's own life experiences add such authenticity and understanding to his writing about those that live in these oft misunderstood communities. This time the killings are definitely more close to home for Jericho and the plot allows us to see his strength but also his vulnerability and self doubts. Absolutely superb, I can't wait for the next instalment!
I read the first book in this series and loved it and was delighted to be offered the second book and I wasn't disappointed, set in the Fairground owned by Jerichos's Dad it seems Mediums and Mystics are being targeted .Jericho is an ex disgraced Detective but is also part of the travelling community and still loves to solve a mystery or murder sometimes quicker than the Police !!! I think this story was brilliant ,great descriptions of the travelling community ,fast paced intriguing story can't wait to read the next book in the series .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC
I have loved everything William Hussey has written, both in YA and adult, and his previous Jericho book was one of my favourite reads of last year. This is another thrilling ride with twists galore.
Another gritty detective story from William. Well written offering insight to the traveller life whilst delving into the grittier side of what humans are capable of. All the little details of witchcraft and witch hunting as well as mediums and psychics put this right up my street! Great read!
The second Scott Jericho murder mystery tale based around his family travelling fair superbly describes the atmosphere of the community. The murders of psychic fortune tellers including one from the fair form the basis of the story but Scott’s complex life as a former detective and his present relationships are also central to the tale. Pretty graphic in its violent stages it’s a great read ,bring on the next one!
Excellent sequel to an excellent book.
I’ve been looking forward to this since I read Killing Jericho last year. Jericho’s Dead did not disappoint. A very good crime story and the author’s knowledge of the traveller community is a wonderful addition.
Book 2 in the Scott Jericho murder series and you always wonder whether the second book will be as good as the first, well I can assure you it is. Jericho was brought up as a showman on his fathers fair but he left the travelling life to join the police force. That didn’t go as planned! In book 1, Jericho got back together with his former partner Harry ‘Haz’ and they are now both living and travelling with the fair. But their relationship seems to be unsettled and when Jericho does what Jericho does, and gets mixed up with a murder investigation Harry leaves the fair. This is another real page turner of a read with an exciting and twisty plotline.
Briefly, unbeknownst to Jericho, his father has done a deal whereby a well-known psychic is going to make an appearance at a local house reputed to be haunted, hoping to bring more visitors into the fair. But when someone very close to Jericho is murdered in a savage attack Jericho can’t leave it to the police to investigate, his blood is boiling… DCI Thomas Tallis (yes really) is in charge of the investigation and he and Jericho strike up an unlikely friendship agreeing to cooperate in their separate investigations.
I adore Jericho but he is a bit of a hothead and at one point I wanted to slap him and say just talk to Harry and stop making assumptions. His hot-headedness (is that even a word!) does get him into some very sticky situations. He’s got a lot of demons and doesn’t find it easy to share but they are eating him up. There are quite a few potential suspects and so many red herrings I just didn’t know who the killer was. I love the realistic portrayal of the showman’s life, I have friends in this community and they are just like this - loyal, caring and very genuine people. This is definitely one of my favourite series right now and I hope Jericho will be back soon. Loved it.
This was a thrilling mystery with an interesting story pieced together at a good pace that kept me guessing until the end. Scott Jericho brings all the intrigue and flaws from the first book that make him an interesting main character to solve the mystery with.
I loved this book. It more than lives up to the promise of Killing Jericho. I can't wait to read the next instalment.
I am totally hooked on this series, Jericho is probably the most unique detective that I have ever read about and William Hussey has certainly done his research for this book.
Scott Jericho is back working in his father's fair, he was brought up as a traveller working the rides but much to his father's disgust Jericho joined the police force. Jericho was good at his job until he was kicked off the force and served a prison sentence for attacking a murder suspect.
Once a detective, always a detective and Jericho is thrown into the midst of things when a serial killer is on the loose, a killer who is targeting mediums and when one of the victims is very close to home Jericho is determined to find answers.
An unusual two way respect happens between Jericho and DCI Tallis, the detective leading the hunt for the killer.
This story has more twists and turns than a corkscrew, red herrings are thrown out right, left, and centre, the suspects are many but who hates mediums enough to slaughter them ?
I love Jericho, he is moody, angry, he has his own demons to fight but he has a moral compass.
Another thread running through the story is Jericho's troubled relationship with Haz, why does Haz keep disappearing ? does he have anything to do with the killings ?
I love the atmosphere of the fairground, I love the people with their own loyalties, their own customs, even their own language. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Thank you Net Gallery for this ARC, my review is voluntary.
An ex policeman and Traveller investigates deaths related to Psychic phenomena and people who claim to foretell the future and commune with the dead.
An enjoyable crime fiction novel where Jerico eventually uncovers the clues.
For anyone who enjoys murder mysteries.
A most welcome return for Scott Jericho, a traveller whose past is set to haunt him. After the conclusion of Killing Jericho, Scott and his partner Harry have settled into the fair, with Harry gaining their trust and affection of most of the fairground’s travellers. But there’s something not quite right with this pair; the frays are showing. Harry is taciturn, Scott’s hardly loquacious at the best of times and Scott thinks Harry is drifting away.
But Scott has other things on his mind too and he can’t afford to put Harry front and centre at the moment. The fair has come to the Purley Hall, the most haunted house in England, where they are adding atmosphere and crowds at Hallowe’en to the appearance of celebrated TV personality, psychic Darrel Everwood , there to do a live televised appearance.
But this event has also caused controversy. There is a Priest who is out to ensure the event does not go ahead, warning of dire consequences that may befall unbelievers. A distraught couple are haunted by what Darrel Everwood said to them and blame him for their despair.
And someone is targeting those who claim to have psychic abilities. It’s not long before murder occurs and with it overtures of voodoo, witchcraft and menace. Against the setting of a haunted house surrounded by woods, the whole thing has a ghostly, scary atmosphere. The first murder is macabre; violent and horribly brutal.
Then Scott finds a symbol that warns him that the fair’s fortune teller, beloved by the Jericho family, is under threat. And the murders don’t stop there.
Darrel Everwood believes he he will die on the night of the broadcast while around him the battle rages between those who believe and those who are fiercely sceptical.
DCI Thomas Tallis is in charge of the murder investigations. A calm and rational man, he makes a good foil to Scott, recognising that he can’t stop him conducting his own enquiries, but making sure he keeps Tallis in the loop.
Scott is also paying to keep tabs on Pete Garris, a man who used to be his friend and confidant and who now wields a secret that Scott told him about Harry and uses it to poke Scott like a bear in a cage.
William Hussey creates a wonderfully vivid picture of life in the traveller’s fairground community. The rich language, the feeling of a community looking out for each other and the need to be loyal are what stands out. For Scott, who is a man often filled with rage, this is his home and these are his people and being with them adds stability to his life.
Now though, the fair and its surroundings are full of threats, violence and drama. Scott is investigating and it brings him back to a place he never wanted to be again; seeing some old faces who have a lesson or two to teach him, as well as leaving him owing a favour.
Verdict: William Hussey has written an outstanding, distinctive character in Scott Jericho and Jericho’s Dead is, if anything, better than its predecessor, Killing Jericho, which I recommend you read first for continuity purposes.
The writing is fresh and absolutely immersive. It is very well plotted and left me in awe of the ending which I just did not see coming. Highly recommended.
